Book excerpt: In recent years, a new numerical methodology for conservation laws-the Space-Time Conservation Element and Solution Element Method (CE/SE), was developed by Dr. Chang of NASA Glenn Research Center and collaborators. In nature, the new method may be categorized as a finite volume method, where the conservation element (CE) is equivalent to a finite control volume (or cell) and the solution element (SE) can be understood as the cell interface. However, due to its rigorous treatment of the fluxes and geometry, it is different from the existing schemes. The CE/SE scheme features: (1) space and time treated on the same footing, the integral equations of conservation laws are solve( for with second order accuracy, (2) high resolution, low dispersion and low dissipation, (3) novel, truly multi-dimensional, simple but effective non-reflecting boundary condition, (4) effortless implementation of computation, no numerical fix or parameter choice is needed, an( (5) robust enough to cover a wide spectrum of compressible flow: from weak linear acoustic waves to strong, discontinuous waves (shocks) appropriate for linear and nonlinear aeroacoustics. Currently, the CE/SE scheme has been developed to such a stage that a 3-13 unstructured CE/SE Navier-Stokes solver is already available. However, in the present paper, as a general introduction to the CE/SE method, only the 2-D unstructured Euler CE/SE solver is chosen as a prototype and is sketched in Section 2. Then applications of the CE/SE scheme to linear, nonlinear aeroacoustics and airframe noise are depicted in Sections 3, 4, and 5 respectively to demonstrate its robustness and capability. Despite its second order accuracy in space and time, it possesses low dispersion errors and low dissipation. The method is robust enough to cover a wide range of compressible flows: from weak linear acoustic waves to strong discontinuous waves (shocks). An outstanding feature of the CE/SE scheme is its truly multi-dimensional, simple but effective non-reflecting boundary condition (NRBC), which is particularly valuable for computational aeroacoustics (CAA). Book excerpt: Abstract: This thesis reports the results of my M.S. research work about applying the space-time Conservation Element and Solution Element (CESE) method to computational aero- and hydro- acoustics. I am concerned with numerical solutions of nonlinear fluid equations for wave propagation in low-speed flows in air and in water. The case simulated is flow over cylinder. For air flows, three different Reynolds numbers are considered: 89000, 46000, and 22000. Results compared favorably with previously published numerical and experimental results. For water flow over a cylinder at Re = 89000 is carried out and the generated noises are predicted.

As with all emerging technologies, it is paramount that we assess the various opportuni ties and establish achievable goals for this new technology. Essential to this process is the identification and prioritization of fundamental aeroacoustics problems which are amenable to direct numerical siIn ulation. Questions, ranging from the role numerical methods play in the classical theoretical approaches to aeroacoustics, to the correct specification of well-posed numerical problems, need to be answered. These issues provided the impetus for the Workshop on Computa tional Aeroacoustics sponsored by ICASE and the Acoustics Division of NASA LaRC on April 6-9, 1992. The participants of the Work shop were leading aeroacousticians, computational fluid dynamicists and applied mathematicians. The Workshop started with the open ing remarks by M. Y. Hussaini and the welcome address by Kristin Hessenius who introduced the keynote speaker, Sir James Lighthill. The keynote address set the stage for the Workshop. It was both an authoritative and up-to-date discussion of the state-of-the-art in aeroacoustics. The presentations at the Workshop were divided into five sessions - i) Classical Theoretical Approaches (William Zorumski, Chairman), ii) Mathematical Aspects of Acoustics (Rodolfo Rosales, Chairman), iii) Validation Methodology (Allan Pierce, Chairman), iv) Direct Numerical Simulation (Michael Myers, Chairman), and v) Unsteady Compressible Flow Computa tional Methods (Douglas Dwoyer, Chairman).

Book excerpt: We are pleased to present the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Computational Fluid Dynamics held at the University of Sydney, Australia, from July 15 to 19, 2002. The conference was a productive meeting of scientists, mathematicians and engineers involved in the computation of fluid flow. Keynote lectures were presented in the areas of optimisation, algorithms, turbulence and bio-fluid mechanics. Two hundred and fifty abstracts from many countries were received for con sideration. The executive committee, consisting of A. Lerat, M. Napolitano, J.J. Chattot, N. Satofuka and myself, were responsible for the selection of papers. Each of the members had a separate subcommittee to carry out the evaluation. One hundred and seventy papers were selected of which one hundred and fifty two were presented at the conference. All papers that appear in the proceedings have been peer reviewed by a panel of experts (with a minimum of two for every paper) before publication. The conference was attended by 160 delegates with a minimum of late with drawals. The informal and friendly atmosphere provided by the university sur roundings was highly appreciated, and the technical aspects of the conference were stimulating. It is appropriate here to thank Alain Lerat, the retiring secretary of the international scientific committee of the conference. We also wish to welcome J. J. Chattot who is the incoming secretary.
