Book Mathematical Theory of Compressible Fluid Flow

Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Compressible Fluid Flow written by Richard von Mises and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneer in the fields of statistics and probability theory, Richard von Mises (1883–1953) made notable advances in boundary-layer-flow theory and airfoil design. This text on compressible flow, unfinished upon his sudden death, was subsequently completed in accordance with his plans, and von Mises' first three chapters were augmented with a survey of the theory of steady plane flow. Suitable as a text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students — as well as a reference for professionals — Mathematical Theory of Compressible Fluid Flow examines the fundamentals of high-speed flows, with detailed considerations of general theorems, conservation equations, waves, shocks, and nonisentropic flows. In this, the final work of his distinguished career, von Mises summarizes his extensive knowledge of a central branch of fluid mechanics. Characteristically, he pays particular attention to the basics, both conceptual and mathematical. The novel concept of a specifying equation clarifies the role of thermodynamics in the mechanics of compressible fluids. The general theory of characteristics receives a remarkably complete and simple treatment, with detailed applications, and the theory of shocks as asymptotic phenomena appears within the context of rational mechanics.

Book Generalized Riemann Problems in Computational Fluid Dynamics

Download or read book Generalized Riemann Problems in Computational Fluid Dynamics written by Matania Ben-Artzi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-10 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical simulation of compressible, inviscid time-dependent flow is a major branch of computational fluid dynamics. Its primary goal is to obtain accurate representation of the time evolution of complex flow patterns, involving interactions of shocks, interfaces, and rarefaction waves. The Generalized Riemann Problem (GRP) algorithm, developed by the authors for this purpose, provides a unifying 'shell' which comprises some of the most commonly used numerical schemes of this process. This monograph gives a systematic presentation of the GRP methodology, starting from the underlying mathematical principles, through basic scheme analysis and scheme extensions (such as reacting flow or two-dimensional flows involving moving or stationary boundaries). An array of instructive examples illustrates the range of applications, extending from (simple) scalar equations to computational fluid dynamics. Background material from mathematical analysis and fluid dynamics is provided, making the book accessible to both researchers and graduate students of applied mathematics, science and engineering.

Book An Introduction to Compressible Flows with Applications

Download or read book An Introduction to Compressible Flows with Applications written by José Pontes and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a concise and practical survey of the principles governing compressible flows, along with selected applications. It starts with derivation of the time-dependent, three-dimensional equation of compressible potential flows, and a study of weak waves, including evaluation of the sound speed in gases. The following chapter addresses quasi-one-dimensional flows, the study of normal shock waves, and flow in ducts with constant cross section subjected to friction and/or heat transfer. It also investigates the effects of friction and heat transfer in ducts with variable cross section. The chapter ends by pointing to the analogy between one-dimensional compressible flows and open channel hydraulics. Further, the book discusses supersonic flows, including the study of oblique shock waves, and supersonic flows over corners and wedges. It also examines Riemann problems, numerical resolution of the wave equation, and of nonlinear hyperbolic problems, including propagation of strong waves. A subsequent chapter focuses on the small perturbation theory of subsonic, transonic and supersonic flows around slender bodies aligned or almost aligned to the uniform inflow. In particular, it explores subsonic and supersonic flows over a wavy wall. Lastly, an appendix with a short derivation of the Fluid Mechanics basic equations is included. The final chapter addresses the problem of transonic flows where both subsonic and supersonic are present. Lastly, an appendix with a short derivation of the Fluid Mechanics basic equations is included. Illustrated with several practical examples, this book is a valuable tool to understand the most fundamental mathematical principles of compressible flows. Graduate Mathematics, Physics and Engineering students as well as researchers with an interest in the aerospace sciences benefit from this work.

Book Theory and Computation in Hydrodynamic Stability

Download or read book Theory and Computation in Hydrodynamic Stability written by W. O. Criminale and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of hydrodynamic stability is fundamental to many subjects, ranging from geophysics and meteorology through to engineering design. This treatise covers both classical and modern aspects of the subject, systematically developing it from the simplest physical problems, then progressing to the most complex, considering linear and nonlinear situations, and analyzing temporal and spatial stability. The authors examine each problem both analytically and numerically. Many relevant fluid flows are treated, including those where the fluid may be compressible, or those from geophysics, or those that require salient geometries for description. Details of initial-value problems are explored equally with those of stability. The text includes copious illustrations and an extensive bibliography, making it suitable for courses on hydrodynamic stability or as an authoritative reference for researchers. In this second edition the opportunity has been taken to update the text and, most importantly, provide solutions to the numerous extended exercises.

Book The Correlation of Oblique Shock Parameters for Ratios of Specific Heats from 1 to 5 3 with Application to Real Gas Flows

Download or read book The Correlation of Oblique Shock Parameters for Ratios of Specific Heats from 1 to 5 3 with Application to Real Gas Flows written by Mitchel H. Bertram and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytic investigation was made to show the extent of correlation of the exact oblique shock parameters that may be accomplished by means of similarity parameters suggested by approximate theory. The exact theory for the inviscid flow of a perfect gas was calculated for Mach numbers of 1.1 to 40, ratios of specific heats from 1 to 5/3, and angles of attack from 0° to shock detachment. From consideration of the approximate theory and the concept of effective ratio of specific heats, the oblique shock correlations were found to be useful for the rapid calculation of many flow parameters for an equilibrium real gas. Some useful correlations are also given for the case of isentropic expansion around a sharp corner.

Book Basics of Fluid Mechanics and Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics

Download or read book Basics of Fluid Mechanics and Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics written by Titus Petrila and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-14 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book – through the topics and the problems approach – aims at filling a gap, a real need in our literature concerning CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Our presentation results from a large documentation and focuses on reviewing the present day most important numerical and computational methods in CFD. Many theoreticians and experts in the field have expressed their - terest in and need for such an enterprise. This was the motivation for carrying out our study and writing this book. It contains an important systematic collection of numerical working instruments in Fluid Dyn- ics. Our current approach to CFD started ten years ago when the Univ- sity of Paris XI suggested a collaboration in the field of spectral methods for fluid dynamics. Soon after – preeminently studying the numerical approaches to Navier–Stokes nonlinearities – we completed a number of research projects which we presented at the most important inter- tional conferences in the field, to gratifying appreciation. An important qualitative step in our work was provided by the dev- opment of a computational basis and by access to a number of expert softwares. This fact allowed us to generate effective working programs for most of the problems and examples presented in the book, an - pect which was not taken into account in most similar studies that have already appeared all over the world.
