Book Comprehensive Toxicology Volume 9

Download or read book Comprehensive Toxicology Volume 9 written by R.S. McCuskey and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1999-08-18 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, which is separated into two parts, presents important new information concerning mechanisms of effect and consequences of exposure of the liver and gastrointestinal tract to a wide variety of toxicants. Both sections on the liver and GI tract provide the reader with concise introductory descriptions of relevant cellular and organ anatomy, physiology, and mechanisms of toxic injury. Specific consideration is given to methods of toxin exposure and to processes that provide defence against injury. The discussions provide a broad focus but also contain details about molecular, cellular, and biochemical mechanisms. The section on the liver (34 chapters) provides a comprehensive review of the toxic effects of a wide variety of specific compounds including volatile hydrocarbons, anesthetic agents, drugs of therapeutic value as well as of abuse, heavy metals, natural compounds etc. The section on the gastrointestinal tract (15 chapters), presenting toxicology of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon, represents the first major reference work available that provides both a broad overview of the effect of toxicants on the mucosal, motility, and immune functions of the GI tract as well as specific information about specific toxicants. The final chapter presents an overview of clinical toxicology in animals with specific focus on the liver and gastrointestinal systems. This volume is of specific interest and use to those concerned with environmental and industrial toxicology, as well as with mechanisms of toxicant injury and clinical medicine.

Book Cellular and Molecular Toxicology

Download or read book Cellular and Molecular Toxicology written by J.P. Vanden Heuvel and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2002-02-14 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 14 in the series Comprehensive Toxicology extends and complements the previously published 13-volume set. This volume will be available separately. Toxicology is the study of the nature and actions of chemicals on biological systems. In more primitive times, it really was the study of poisons. However, in the early 1500s, it was apparent to Paracelsus that "the dose differentiates a poison and a remedy". Clearly, the two most important tenets of toxicology were established during that time. The level of exposure (dose) and the duration of exposure (time) will determine the degree and nature of a toxicological response. Since that time the discipline of toxicology has made major advances in identifying and characterizing toxicants. The growth of toxicology as a scientific discipline has been driven to a large extent by the use of extremely powerful molecular and cell biology techniques. The overall aim of this volume is to demonstrate how these advances are being used to elucidate causal pathways (or linkages) for potential adverse health consequences of human exposure to environmental chemicals or radiation. A unique feature of this volume is its illustration of how carefully-designed studies of the molecular mechanisms of chemical action provide not only understanding of the potential toxicity of the chemical under investigation, but also new insights into the functioning of the biological system used as an experimental model. Each chapter contains a listing of major peer-reviewed articles and reviews and useful web-sites. In addition, each chapter contains a broad introductory section that outlines the subsequent sections. These Introductory and Overview sections are designed to be stand alone chapters, and may be packaged as a textbook in graduate level courses.

Book Comprehensive Toxicology Volume 1

Download or read book Comprehensive Toxicology Volume 1 written by J.A. Bond and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1999-08-18 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 provides the reader with a basic overview of the field of toxicology. The volume is divided into four sections: 1) introduction, 2) toxicokinetics, 3) mechanisms of toxicity, and 4) risk assessment. The volume provides an in-depth coverage of the field of toxicokinetics including exposure assessment, routes of exposure of toxicants, and distribution, biotransformation, and excretion of toxicant. Dosimetry modeling, including physiologically based pharmacokinetic models, and extrapolation modeling are covered. The volume also covers key mechanisms associated with toxicity/carcinogenicity of chemicals. Concepts of risk assessment are also discussed in this volume. The contents of Volume 1 lays the ground work for subsequent volumes of the Comprehensive Toxicology series where different aspects of the field of toxicology are extensively discussed.
