Book excerpt: Le but de cette étude est de simuler par des irradiations externes le scénario complexe d’auto-irradiation dans un verre nucléaire. Des irradiations par des électrons et des ions utilisant des faisceaux d’ions simple ou double ont été réalisées sur des verres borosilicatés simples et complexes. L'irradiation aux électrons engendre un appauvrissement en ions alcalins dans les premiers microns en surface, qui conduit pour le verre simple de borosilicate de sodium à une ségrégation des unités boratés, caractéristique d’une séparation de phase. La réponse du volume du verre est différente de celle de la surface et montre une dépolymérisation du réseau vitreux d’ampleur variable selon la composition chimique. Les irradiations simple faisceau ont montré que des ions de pouvoir d’arrêt électronique supérieur à 3keVnm-1 (seuil de création de traces ioniques) simulent le dommage engendré par les noyaux de recul, alors que des d’ions de pouvoir d’arrêt nucléaire négligeable et de pouvoir d’arrêt électronique inférieur à ce seuil simulent le dommage provenant des particules alpha. Les irradiations double faisceaux ont montré que les particules alpha induisent un recuit partiel du dommage généré par les ions lourds. L’impact des flux respectifs des deux particules a été étudié. En utilisant un rapport de flux pertinent, les amplitudes des évolutions de propriétés des verres irradiés en scénario double faisceau sont en très bon accord avec les données de la littérature obtenues sur des verres dopés en actinides. Ainsi, cette étude montre l’importance et le besoin d’utiliser des scénarios d’irradiation multi-faisceaux pour comprendre les effets d’irradiation dans les verres nucléaires.

Book excerpt: La transmutation des actinides permettrait de diminuer le volume de déchets nucléaires susceptibles d'être enfouis en couches géologiques profondes. Toutefois, une matrice est généralement nécessaireautour des radioéléments après leur séparation poussée. Si l'irradiation dans le contexte de la transmutation de matériaux références cristallisés a été largement étudiée, aucune étude n'a porté surles amorphes dans de telles conditions. L'étude de l'évolution des verres sous bombardement d'ionslourds peut toutefois permettre de mieux comprendre les mécanismes d'endommagement mis en jeu lors de l'irradiation.Les verres étudiés, de type SiAlO(N), ont été choisis pour leur réfractarité, leur durabilité chimique prouvée et leurs excellentes propriétés mécaniques. Cinq compositions, dans les systèmes Y-Mg-Si- Al-O(-N), Nd-Mg-Si-Al-O(-N) et La-Y-Si-Al-O-N, ont été synthétisées et caractérisées.Irradiés au GANIL (Caen) par des ions lourds d'une énergie de plusieurs centaines de MeV, ces verres voient leur dureté décroître suite à l'irradiation. Ce phénomène, fortement lié au pouvoir d'arrêt électronique de l'ion incident, semble indépendant de la quantité et de la nature des modificateurs du réseau. La diminution de la dureté est cependant plus marquée dans le cas des verres contenant de l'azote. Elle est liée à un changement dans le mécanisme de déformation du verre : de comportement ± normal α avant irradiation, ce dernier se déforme par densification suite au bombardement. Ce changement dans la réponse à l'indentation est probablement dû à plusieurs modifications structurales. En effet, l'absorption UV-visible met en évidence la présence d'un nombre accru de défauts ponctuels après bombardement. De plus, particulièrement dans le cas des verres contenant de l'azote, l'environnement local du silicium et de l'aluminium, étudiés en spectroscopie RMN et Raman,sont largement perturbés par l'irradiation.

Nous avons mis en oeuvre un ensemble de techniques de caractérisation physico-chimique et structurale afin de décrire l'évolution de la morphologie et de la composition superficielle de verres simples dopés avec un ou plusieurs éléments de transition (Fe, Mo, Nd, Cs, Ce, Th) ainsi que la cinétique de relâchement des éléments dans la solution. Dans quelques cas (verres simples, couches d'altération et verres complexes), nous avons également cherché à préciser l'éventuelle évolution de l'environnement chimique des dopants au moyen de l'absorption X. Il apparaît clairement que la vitesse de dissolution d'un borosilicate alcalin pré-irradié augmente d'un facteur 2 à 4 par rapport à celle de son homologue non irradié et lixivié dans les mêmes conditions. L'irradiation affecte surtout les distributions superficielles du bore et du sodium. Elle conduit à la formation de couches hydratées plus morcelées. En outre, elle favorise l'enrichissement superficiel en éléments réputés difficilement solubles comme A1 et Fe dans la mesure où l'hydratation de la surface du verre est accentuée. Enfin, l'irradiation semble avoir pour effet de retenir des éléments mobiles comme le molybdène dans la couche altérée et notamment quand il se trouve associé au fer

Some of these have been proved: others are still at the level of likely but unproven conjectures. The main text of this biography is written almost entirely without equations. Organized after Theodor Adorno's Minima Moralia, this unschooled exercise in aesthetic thought--gleefully dilettantish, oftentimes dangerously close to the epigrammatic--interrogates an array of subject matter (although inescapably circling back to the curiously resemblant histories of Western visual art and instrumental music) through the lens of drive-by speculation. Erick Verran's approach to philosophical inquiry follows the brute-force literary technique of Jacques Derrida to exhaustively favor the material grammar of a signifier over hand-me-down meaning, juxtaposing outer semblances with their buried systems and our etched-in-stone intuitions about color and illusion, shape and value, with lessons stolen from seemingly unrelatable disciplines. Obiter Dicta is an unapologetic experiment in intellectual dot-connecting that challenges much long-standing wisdom about everything from illuminated manuscripts to Minecraft and the evolution of European music with lyrical brevity; that is, before jumping to the next topic.
