Book Composition and Rhetoric for Higher Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Composition and Rhetoric for Higher Schools Classic Reprint written by Sara Elizabeth Husted Lockwood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition and Rhetoric for Higher Schools Certain demands may fairly be made of any textbook that purposes to serve the cause of good teaching and aims to win an honorable place in the classroom. Two of these demands take the form of the categorical imperative: the book must be practical, and it must be adequate in scope and content. To these two should be added a third - the book must be interesting; for to sentence students to the use of a dull and lifeless text-book is, often, to condemn them to a lifelong distaste for the subject of that particular book. Then, in these days of many books, the newcomer may fairly be asked to show some traits of its own such as stamp personality on a man or a woman, - traits which will mark it out at once from other books in its class. Two of the important characteristics which give this book its distinct individuality are: (1) The cumulative method of treatment shown in the text in the illustrative examples and especially in the exercises; and (2) The constant emphasis laid on the pupil's own thinking and writing. These features are particularly well illustrated in the treatment of the paragraph. In the early part of the book the single paragraph is made the unit of writing; then, naturally and gradually, related paragraphs are introduced; and, finally, these develop into the longer theme. Book High School English

Download or read book High School English written by Alfred Allan Kern and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English: Composition-Rhetoric-Literature The literature selections have been edited with the design not only of supplying necessary information but also of inducing the student to do his own thinking. There is at present far too much so-called appreciation and far too little real thought expended upon literature. In the prepara tion of the Exercises and of the Notes and Questions the authors have constantly borne in mind this supreme aim of education - the development of the ability to think. Teachers are therefore urged to require the students to write all the Exercises and to answer all the Questions. Book Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint

Download or read book Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint written by Maude L. Radford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition and Rhetoric It is believed that well-prepared students of the first and second years of the high-school can use this book, although certain schools which have not been able to devote much time to the study of English might find it profitable in the third and fourth years. In either case it is hoped that this book may be a directing and suggestive force, especially if it be supplemented by frank class-criticism upon the themes. Too much can not be said of the value of such criticism from teachers and students. It is often difficult to draw out, but once it is secured, it will be found to have both a stimulating and a restraining influence on the written work of the students, and will make the study of English a pleasure. Book Composition Rhetoric

Download or read book Composition Rhetoric written by Fred Newton Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition-Rhetoric: Designed for Use in Secondary Schools IN the preparation of this work the authors have been guided by three considerations, which have seemed to them to be of fundamental importance. First, it is desirable that a closer union than has pre vailed hitherto be brought about between secondary com position and secondary rhetoric. That rhetoric in the high school should be regarded as a thing apart from composi tion, that it should be regarded simply as a course, to be pursued and passed and put out of remembrance as quickly as possible, is not good either for rhetoric or for composi tion. In this book, as the name signifies, no such apartness has been recognized. The rhetoric which is found in this book is meant to be the theory of the pupil's practice, nothing more, - the explicit statement of principles which are implicit in all successful elementary composition. If here and there the temptation to put in rhetorical furniture which no gentleman's mind should be without, has not been wholly thrust aside, such temptation has, at least, been manfully resisted. To this let the treatment of figurative expressions bear witness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Composition and Rhetoric

Download or read book Composition and Rhetoric written by William Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition and Rhetoric: By Practice, With Exercises, Adapted for Use in High Schools and Colleges This is, first of all, a practical book; not that it excludes theory, but that it gives prominence to practice. If this were not the case, it need not have been written. There are already books enough that deal ably with the theoretical part of the subject, but there are none that combine with theory a sufficient amount of practice. As composition is both a science and an art, no system of teaching it can be successful that does not recognize both of these departments. Young people do not acquire facility and correctness of expression merely by memorizing rules or by poring over methods of sentential structure. Repeated and varied experience in the making of sentences is necessary as well. Still, the learning of principles is not to be neglected; for, although it is not the whole, it is an essential part. How, then, can these two departments of the subject be most advantageously presented to the pupil? Every discerning teacher must have found that little theory and much practice is by far the most effective method of teaching composition. On this maxim this book is based; and its purpose is to furnish the teacher with the means of carrying into effect the plan here indicated. It proceeds on the simple method of laying down a few principles at a time, and then illustrating them with such number and variety of exercises that the pupil may fully master the practical application of these principles, and thereby learn not only to write, but to write correctly. Book Composition and Rhetoric

Download or read book Composition and Rhetoric written by Rose M. Kavana and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition and Rhetoric: Based on Literary Models The book is intended to furnish a complete course in high schools and for beginning courses in academies, seminaries, and normal schools. It is recommended that high school students master first the lessons on narration and description, paying especial attention to devices for ornamentation and to description in the short story; then take up exposition and its combination with narration and description, emphasizing the work on the book review, the historical or biographical essay, and the nature sketch; and complete the course with argumentation and persuasion as found in combination with the other three forms of discourse in the debate and the oration. To Mr. George B. Aiton, State Inspector of High Schools for Minnesota, and to Mr. R. W. Bruere, of the Department of English, The University of Chicago, the authors are indebted for the reading of the work in proof and for many valuable suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Rhetoric and English Composition: Second High School Course It is obvious that a writer's main purposes in com position are (i) that what he writes Should be under stood by the reader; (2) that what he writes should impress the reader forcibly; and (3) that what he writes should impress the reader favorably, z'.e. Im press him by the neatness and accuracy and skill with which the author has accomplished his task. The Development of Appreciation of Literature. - The development of literary taste is a difficult, slow, and vexing task. The beauty of literature cannot be tracked and hunted down as can obvious facts and dates. In the early years it is safer not to analyze too much, but to depend upon the constant presence of poetic beauty to communicate its charm. In art of any kind, unconscious. Book Effective Expression

Download or read book Effective Expression written by Charles Elbert Rhodes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effective Expression: A Textbook on Composition and Rhetoric for the Four Years of High School and the First Year of College We trust we have made the book self-explanatory. We have emphasized getting ready to write in an introductory chapter, for it is the best approach to the subject; we have treated the fundamental prin ciples and the rhetorical qualities, vitally, for too often they have been but empty words; we have shown the philosophy of the paragraph and the topic-sentence, together with the relation of the topic-sentence to the method of development, for the paragraph is the unit of the composition, and mastery of it goes far toward mastery of the whole subject. We have corrected the popular conception that rhetoric is flowery writing by showing that it is the art of effective writing; we have shown that diction, grammar, the use of figures of speech, and the study of poetry are essential for all who would so handle pure, crude facts, the raw material, as to make the finished product effective. We have shown that oral composition is best treated along with written composition and that such a method both saves time and increases efficiency. The chapter on The Finished Product reveals the importance of bringing the knowledge of literature to bear upon our writing, and shows how and what to read until one has formed his own taste and needs less guidance. Download or read book Illustrated Lessons in Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint written by Erle E. Clippinger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Lessons in Composition and Rhetoric This book aims to provide more definite directions for a secondary school course in composition and rhetoric than are given in the texts now in use. Primarily, the book has been prepared for the pupil, by the use of theme assign ments and illustrations that are related to his experience. Secondarily, it has been prepared for the teacher as a means of economizing his time in the preparation of definite assignments and in the correction of themes. The material has been gathered gradually from classroom work. It has been tested by repeated use in normal school and high school classes; and the theme assignments have been selected because they bring good results. The book has three divisions. Part One contains about fifty definite assignments for themes with simple discussions of rhetorical theory. Each assignment is accompanied by a list of suggested subjects and an example that really illus trates what the theme should be. Part Two contains the more advanced discussion of special forms of discourse. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Elements of Rhetoric and Composition

Download or read book The Elements of Rhetoric and Composition written by David Jayne Hill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Rhetoric and Composition: A d104-Book for Schools and Colleges This book is designed as a practical introduction to English composition. In "The Science of Rhetoric," - the advanced work of the series, - the aim is to present the laws of discourse as a scientific system. In this book, the aim is to furnish a compendium of rules for guidance in the art of writing. It is taken for granted that those who will use this book can both read and write simple English sentences. For such students, the mere making of sentences is an unprofitable exercise. What they especially need is direction how to concentrate the mind upon the work of composing. The only way to acquire skill in writing is by actual practice in the various processes of the art. Accordingly, learners should first be assisted in finding a subject of thought, and then be shown how to accumulate, arrange, and express the ideas connected with the theme. This view has given shape to the treatment of composition in this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
