Book excerpt: Aluminum behavior0́4accumulation, agglomeration and ignition0́4is studied in a unique, wide-distribution, ammonium perchlorate/hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (AP/HTPB) propellant formulation that results in low Al agglomeration, even at low pressures (1-30 atm). Variations in formulation0́4such as fine-AP/binder ratio, Al particle size, Al loading, coarse-AP size0́4are also examined. A fuel-rich, oxygenated binder matrix highly loaded with fine (2-℗æm) AP (FAP) at 75/25:FAP/binder (by mass) is found to have premixed flame conditions that produce minimal agglomeration (without ignition) of 15-℗æm Al. Coarse AP (CAP) is added to the system in the form of either particles (200 or 400 ℗æm) or pressed-AP laminates (simulated CAP). In the 2-D laminate system the CAP/oxyfuel-matrix flame structure is seen to be similar to that previously described for non-aluminized laminates with split (diffusion) and merged (partially-premixed) flame regimes, depending on pressure and fuel-matrix thickness. Both laminate and particulate systems show that with CAP present, Al can agglomerate more extensively on CAP via lateral surface migration from fuel matrix to the CAP region. The particulate CAP system also shows that Al can accumulate/agglomerate via settling on CAP from above (in the direction of burning). Both systems, but more clearly the 2-D laminates, show that with CAP present, Al is ignited by the outer CAP/fuel-matrix canopy flames. Thus, a propellant formulation is proposed for reducing overall Al agglomeration through intrinsically reduced agglomeration in the fuel-matrix and a reduced number of CAP-particle agglomerates via higher FAP/CAP ratio.

Book excerpt: The steady-state combustion model developed in FY 1979 was further improved by the incorporation of models of aluminum agglomeration and energetic binder combustion. Application of the model to a large variety of composite propellants was successful for the most part. Remaining deficiencies in the model are discussed. Experiments with a porous burner apparatus designed to simulate the diffusion flames of bimodal propellants revealed that fine oxidizer ports tend to operate more fuel-rich than coarse oxidizer ports, and revealed some flame features that are not contained in current propellant combustion models. The potential of the apparatus for more detailed future work is discussed. A literature review of combustion response models that attempt to account for the heterogeneity of composite propellants was completed, and a new response function model based upon a preferred frequency concept was formulated. Book excerpt: Ammonium perchlorate's burning rate as a function of pressure has an exponent break around 4000 psi where the pressure exponent becomes greater than 1. This causes AP to be highly sensitive to pressure fluctuations that can damage or destroy ammonium perchlorate composite propellant-based solid rocket motors. Studies conducted on AP at these high pressure are few and there is a lack of direct qualitative data due to the challenges posed by the high-pressure environment and optical window structural limitations. This has left the cause exponent break mechanism unknown and difficult to study. The High-Pressure Combustion Lab has built an Ultra-High Pressure Optical Chamber (UHPOC) that allows for optical measurements at these higher pressure regimes. Testing visual measurement techniques using the UHPOC and a telescope zoom lens to take detailed images of the propellant surface during the burn was conducted. Non-aluminized propellant and aluminized propellant samples were tested to observe the mechanisms of aluminum particle combustion in a propellant at high pressures and the behavior of the propellant past the exponent break region. \par At atmospheric, detailed high-speed images on the propellant surface were obtained using a high-powered lamp to light the surface brighter than the flame. At higher pressures, however, the luminosity of the flame was significantly greater than the lamp, creating shadow images of the propellant. Binder agglomerates were observed coming off the surface which increased in size and magnitude as the pressure increased. This is attributed to AP decomposition becoming the dominant burning rate mechanism which burned faster than the surrounding binder as has been observed from previous studies and numerical models. This leaves the binder only partially pyrolyzed, forming the agglomerates which detached from the surface. Aluminum particles were found to ignite at all pressures with the binder agglomerating the same amount in both aluminized and non-aluminized samples. Atmospheric tests show aluminum particles with detached flames and high-pressure tests show aluminum particles with surface flames.
