Book Design and Analysis of Tall and Complex Structures

Download or read book Design and Analysis of Tall and Complex Structures written by Feng Fu and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of tall buildings and complex structures involves challenging activities, including: scheme design, modelling, structural analysis and detailed design. This book provides structural designers with a systematic approach to anticipate and solve issues for tall buildings and complex structures. This book begins with a clear and rigorous exposition of theories behind designing tall buildings. After this is an explanation of basic issues encountered in the design process. This is followed by chapters concerning the design and analysis of tall building with different lateral stability systems, such as MRF, shear wall, core, outrigger, bracing, tube system, diagrid system and mega frame. The final three chapters explain the design principles and analysis methods for complex and special structures. With this book, researchers and designers will find a valuable reference on topics such as tall building systems, structure with complex geometry, Tensegrity structures, membrane structures and offshore structures. Numerous worked-through examples of existing prestigious projects around the world (such as Jeddah Tower, Shanghai Tower, and Petronas Tower etc.) are provided to assist the reader’s understanding of the topic Provides the latest modelling methods in design such as BIM and Parametric Modelling technique Detailed explanations of widely used programs in current design practice, such as SAP2000, ETABS, ANSYS, and Rhino Modelling case studies for all types of tall buildings and complex structures, such as: Buttressed Core system, diagrid system, Tube system, Tensile structures and offshore structures etc.

Book Design of a Light Gauge Steel and Concrete Composite Floor System

Download or read book Design of a Light Gauge Steel and Concrete Composite Floor System written by Liam Alvin Edwards and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to develop a novel composite floor system which provides ease of construction and installation; and has superior spanning capabilities over other floor systems on the market. The floor system is light weight, simple and is comprised of light gauge steel open webbed joists acting compositely with a thin concrete slab, offering advantages over other typical heavy floor systems. A critical component in the composite floor system is the longitudinal shear connection between the concrete slab and steel joist. Welded shear studs are typically used for this type of connection, however, they are costly, time consuming to install, and not suitable for light gauge steel as welding thin steel sections generally causes burn holes, hence the need for a suitable efficient shear connector has arisen. A standard 12 gauge screw has been modified with a custom made bearing collar and has been tested and developed to provide the longitudinal shear connection required between the concrete slab and steel joist to achieve composite action. 24 push out tests were performed to determine the performance of the custom made shear connector, and the reliable strength of the shear connector is determined. Subsequently, large scale flexure tests were performed on 4m long simply supported test specimens to determine the degree of composite action and the strength and stiffness increase due to partial composite action between the concrete slab and steel joist. Analysis of the results shows that there is significant increase in the strength and stiffness of the steel joist when acting compositely with a concrete slab. Recommendations have been made for potential economical savings, and additional research required to produce a marketable composite floor system.
