Book A History of Global Capitalism

Download or read book A History of Global Capitalism written by Sambit Bhattacharyya and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book sets out to explore the economic motivations of imperial expansion under capitalism. This undoubtedly is related to two fundamental research questions in economic sciences. First, what factors explain the divergence in living standards across countries under the capitalist economic system? Second, what ensures internal and external stability of the capitalist economic system? The book adopts a unified approach to address these questions. Using the standard growth model it shows that improvements in living standards are dependent on access to raw materials, labour, capital, technology, and perhaps most importantly 'economies of scale'. Empires ensure scale economy through guaranteed access to markets and raw materials. The stability of the system depends on growth and distribution and it is not possible to have one without the other. However, the quest for growth and imperial expansion implies that one empire invariably comes into conflict with another. This is perhaps the most unstable and potentially dangerous characteristic of the capitalist system. Using extensive historical accounts the book shows that this inherent tension can be best managed by acknowledging mutual spheres of influence within the international system along the lines of the 1815 Vienna Congress. This timely publication addresses not only students and scholars of economics, geography, political science, and history, but also general readers interested in a better understanding of economic development, international relations, and the history of global capitalism.

Download or read book The Atlanticists written by Kenneth Weisbrode and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlanticists is the first major historical study to re-examine the American-European partnership with an emphasis on the personalities behind the policy. Historian Kenneth Weisbrode explores how a network of diplomats and politicians imagined, carefully constructed, and sustained the strong system of European alliances we recognize today. In these policymakers' vision--well-known figures as Dean Acheson, W. Averell Harriman, and Henry Kissinger--America and Europe were part of a single cooperative transatlantic community. In today's fractious world, The Atlanticists is both timely and telling.

Book Understanding the European Union s External Relations

Download or read book Understanding the European Union s External Relations written by Michèle Knodt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union is one of the world's biggest economies. However, its role as an international actor is ambiguous and it's not always able to transform its political power into effective external policies. The development of an 'assertive' European Union challenges the image of an internal project aimed at economic integration and international relations theories based on unitary state actors. This book systematically links the EU's external relations to existing political theories, showing how existing theories need to be modified in order to deal with specific characteristics of the EU as an international actor.

Book Reviewing European Union Accession

Download or read book Reviewing European Union Accession written by Tom Hashimoto and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2017 has been an uneasy one for the EU, with so-called Brexit on the horizon and the rise of populist euroskepticism in a number of Member States. This year, with the tenth anniversary of the Romanian and Bulgarian accession to the Union, is a good year to pause and reflect over the life and future of the Union. In this work, we envision the next decade with Europe 2020 strategy and review the fruits of the 2004 accession in Central and Eastern Europe. What has the Union achieved? Which policy areas are likely to change and how? How successful, and by what measure, has the accession of the 10 Member States in 2004 been? Reviewing European Union Accession addresses a wide range of issues, deliberately without any thematic constraints, in order to explore EU enlargement from a variety of perspectives, both scientific and geographical, internal and external. In contrast to the major works in this field, we highlight the interrelated, and often unexpected, nature of the integration process – hence the subtitle, unexpected results, spillover effects and externalities.

Book Quagmire

  • Author : Leon T. Hadar
  • Publisher : Cato Institute
  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN : 9780932790934
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Quagmire written by Leon T. Hadar and published by Cato Institute. This book was released on 1992 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hadar argues that recent developments in the Middle East do not in fact demonstrate a need for American involvement there. Noting that the various regional disputes go back centuries, he points out that American leaders have neither the power nor the knowledge to manage the conflict and the lives of people in the Middle East. U.S. meddling and balance-of-power gambits, he writes, inevitably make the various parties more irresponsible and less willing to take advantage of opportunities for settling disputes. In addition, intervention creates resentment that can manifest itself in violence against innocent American citizens. Hadar calls on the United States to redefine its role with respect to Israel, the Palestinians, the Arab countries, and Iran.
