Book excerpt: The Component: A Personal Odyssey towards Another Normal is the Oosterhuis' personal account of four decades of architectural and societal thinking, designing, building, and theorizing. It is an orchestrated yet non-linear series of subjects all leading toward the creation of a parallel world called "Another Normal." Another Normal is as of now a hypothetical parallel world. Nomadic international citizens are the inhabitants of Another Normal. Urged by the climate crisis, the food, energy, and water nexus, and the COVID-19 pandemic, Another Normal demonstrates the inevitable data-driven techno-social architecture of the physically built environment and the metaverse. Besides robotic production on demand of almost anything – when, where, and as needed – Oosterhuis' proposes a dozen strategies that run in parallel to establish Another Normal, among others: ubiquitous basic income, global birthright to own a generous piece of land, distributed production of healthy food, clean energy, and drinking water, ownership of private data and personal avatars in the Web 3.0, autonomous electronic transportation, ubiquitous shared responsibility for clean production and waste treatment techniques, ubiquitous home delivery, working from anywhere for any period of time, and decentralized real-time peer to peer banking. The organic real and the synthetic hyper-real co-evolve naturally in Another Normal, where a mix of strong and simple legislative, planning, and design rules create complexity, diversity, fairness, and equality.

Book Component based Software Development

Download or read book Component based Software Development written by Kung-Kiu Lau and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Component-based software development (CBD) is an emerging discipline that promises to take software engineering into a new era. Building on the achievements of object-oriented software construction, CBD aims to deliver software engineering from a cottage industry into an industrial age for Information Technology, wherein software can be assembled from components, in the manner that hardware systems are currently constructed from kits of parts. This volume provides a survey of the current state of CBD, as reflected by activities that have been taking place recently under the banner of CBD, with a view to giving pointers to future trends. The contributions report case studies - self-contained, fixed-term investigations with a finite set of clearly defined objectives and measurable outcomes - on a sample of the myriad aspects of CBD. The book includes chapters dealing with COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) components; methodologies for CBD; compositionality, i.e. how to calculate or predict properties of a composite from those of its constituents; component software testing; and grid computing.

Book Independent Component Analysis

Download or read book Independent Component Analysis written by James V. Stone and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental problem in neural network research, as well as in many other disciplines, is finding a suitable representation of multivariate data, i.e. random vectors. For reasons of computational and conceptual simplicity, the representation is often sought as a linear transformation of the original data. In other words, each component of the representation is a linear combination of the original variables. Well-known linear transformation methods include principal component analysis, factor analysis, and projection pursuit. Independent component analysis (ICA) is a recently developed method in which the goal is to find a linear representation of nongaussian data so that the components are statistically independent, or as independent as possible. Such a representation seems to capture the essential structure of the data in many applications, including feature extraction and signal separation.

Book Formal Methods for Components and Objects

Download or read book Formal Methods for Components and Objects written by Bernhard K. Aichernig and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus in development methodologies of large and complex software systems has switched in the last two decades from functional issues to structural issues; this holds for both the object-oriented and the more recent component-based software engineering paradigms. Formal methods have been applied successfully to the verification of medium-sized programs in protocol and hardware design for quite a long time. However, their application to the development of large systems requires more emphasis on specification, modeling and validation techniques supporting the concepts of reusability and modifiability, and their implementation in new extensions of existing programming languages like Java. This state-of-the-art survey presents the outcome of the 9th Symposium on Formal Methods for Components and Objects, held in Graz, Austria, in November/December 2010. The volume contains 20 revised contributions submitted after the symposium by speakers from each of the following European IST projects: the FP7-IST project AVANTSSAR on automated validation of trust and security of service-oriented architectures; the FP7-IST project DEPLOY on industrial deployment of advanced system engineering methods for high productivity and dependability; the ESF-COST Action IC0701 on formal verification of object-oriented software; the FP7-IST project HATS on highly adaptable and trustworthy software using formal models; the FP7-SST project INESS on an integrated European railway signalling system; the FP7-IST project MADES on a model-driven approach to improve the current practice in the development of embedded systems; the FP7-IST project MOGENTES on model-based generation of tests for dependable embedded systems; as well as the FP7-IST project MULTIFORM on integrated multi-formalism tool support for the design of networked embedded control systems.

Book Mathematical Frameworks For Component Software Models For Analysis And Synthesis

Download or read book Mathematical Frameworks For Component Software Models For Analysis And Synthesis written by Zhiming Liu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-11-29 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The range of components technology is both wide and diverse, but some common understanding is emerging through the ideas of model-based development. These include the notions of interfaces, contracts, services, connectors and architectures. Key issues in the application of the technology are becoming clearer, including the consistent integration of different views of a component, component composition, component coordination and transformation for platforms. However, we still know little about theories that support analysis and synthesis of component-based systems. The distinct feature of this volume is its focus on mathematical models that identify the “core” concepts as first class modeling elements, and its providing of techniques for integrating and relating them. The volume contains eleven chapters by well-established researchers writing from different perspectives. Each chapter gives explicit definitions of components in terms of a set of key aspects and addresses some of the problems of integration and analysis of various views: component specification, component composition, component coordination, refinement and substitution, and techniques for solving problems. The concepts and techniques are motivated and explained with the help of examples and case studies.

Book Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines

Download or read book Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines written by Jürgen G. Heinrich and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several ceramic parts have already proven their suitability for serial application in automobile engines in very impressive ways, especially in Japan, the USA and in Germany. However, there is still a lack of economical quality assurance concepts. Recently, a new generation of ceramic components, for the use in energy, transportation and environment systems, has been developed. The efforts are more and more system oriented in this field. The only possibility to manage this complex issue in the future will be interdisciplinary cooperation. Chemists, physicists, material scientists, process engineers, mechanical engineers and engine manufacturers will have to cooperate in a more intensive way than ever before. The R&D activities are still concentrating on gas turbines and reciprocating engines, but also on brakes, bearings, fuel cells, batteries, filters, membranes, sensors and actuators as well as on shaping and cutting tools for low expense machining of ceramic components. This book summarizes the scientific papers of the 7th International Symposium "Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines". Some of the most fascinating new applications of ceramic meterials in energy, transportation and environment systems are presented. The proceedings shall lead to new ideas for interdisciplinary activities in the future.

Book Virtual Components Design and Reuse

Download or read book Virtual Components Design and Reuse written by Ralf Seepold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design reuse is not just a topic of research but a real industrial necessity in the microelectronic domain and thus driving the competitiveness of relevant areas like for example telecommunication or automotive. Most companies have already dedicated a department or a central unit that transfer design reuse into reality. All main EDA conferences include a track to the topic, and even specific conferences have been established in this area, both in the USA and in Europe. Virtual Components Design and Reuse presents a selection of articles giving a mature and consolidated perspective to design reuse from different points of view. The authors stem from all relevant areas: research and academia, IP providers, EDA vendors and industry. Some classical topics in design reuse, like specification and generation of components, IP retrieval and cataloguing or interface customisation, are revisited and discussed in depth. Moreover, new hot topics are presented, among them IP quality, platform-based reuse, software IP, IP security, business models for design reuse, and major initiatives like the MEDEA EDA Roadmap.
