Book Compliance Ratio Method of Estimating Crack Length in Dynamic Fracture Toughness Tests

Download or read book Compliance Ratio Method of Estimating Crack Length in Dynamic Fracture Toughness Tests written by WJ. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crack extension during fracture toughness tests of ferritic structural steels cannot be determined from measurements of unloading compliance or electric potential change when the specimen is dynamically loaded. Measurements of crack extension in fracture toughness tests are also very difficult when the test temperature is high or the test environment is aggressive. To circumvent this limitation, researchers for years have been developing key curve and normalization function methods to estimate crack extension in standard elastic-plastic fracture toughness test geometries.

Book Improved Load Ratio Method for Predicting Crack Length

Download or read book Improved Load Ratio Method for Predicting Crack Length written by X. Chen and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elastic compliance from unloading/reloading sequences in a load-displacement record estimates well crack length in elastic-plastic fracture toughness tests of compact tension [C(T)] and bending type specimens. The need for partial unloading of the specimen makes it difficult to run the test under static loading and impossible under either dynamic loading or very high temperatures. Furthermore, fracture toughness testing in which crack length is determined from elastic compliance requires high precision testing equipment and highly skilled technicians. As a result, such tests are confined usually to research laboratories and seldom used under production settings.

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture written by K. Ravi-Chandar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-10-16 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture in solids has attracted much attention for over a century from engineers as well as physicists due both to its technological interest and to inherent scientific curiosity. Rapidly applied loads are encountered in a number of technical applications. In some cases such loads might be applied deliberately, as for example in problems of blasting, mining, and comminution or fragmentation; in other cases, such dynamic loads might arise from accidental conditions. Regardless of the origin of the rapid loading, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms and mechanics of fracture under dynamic loading conditions in order to design suitable procedures for assessing the susceptibility to fracture. Quite apart from its repercussions in the area of structural integrity, fundamental scientific curiosity has continued to play a large role in engendering interest in dynamic fracture problems In-depth coverage of the mechanics, experimental methods, practical applications Summary of material response of different materials Discussion of unresolved issues in dynamic fracture

Book Application of the Normalization Method to Dynamic Fracture Toughness Testing of Alloy 718

Download or read book Application of the Normalization Method to Dynamic Fracture Toughness Testing of Alloy 718 written by SM. Graham and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fracture toughness and tensile properties of Alloy 718 were measured at quasi-static and dynamic loading rates for two different heat treatments and two product forms. Two different methods for conducting the dynamic tests were investigated; one involving interrupted tests and the other utilizing a single impact. The interrupted test method used multiple impacts with displacement limits to enable measurement of crack lengths at intermediate points. The normalization method was used to generate tearing resistance curves for the dynamic tests following the guidelines in ASTM Standard Test Method for measurement of Fracture Toughness (E 1820). The analysis pointed out the importance of obtaining a good measurement of load, displacement, and crack length at the point of maximum displacement (the anchor point). As the amount of ductile crack extension increased, the uncertainty in the plasticity function fit also increased. Methods to improve the fit were investigated, including the addition of anchor points from multiple tests, and use of a tangency point to estimate initiation. The resulting curves are compared to ascertain the variability obtained from nominally identical specimens, and to evaluate the effect of loading rate on the plasticity function. The normalization tearing resistance curves are compared with curves generated from the interrupted tests using compliance measurements during unloads to determine crack extension. Good agreement was obtained between the two methods of measuring tearing resistance, thereby validating the normalization analysis. The tests showed that multiple impacts drive down the tearing resistance, which may be significant in applications where a dynamic event causes load fluctuation.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey is presented of current methods of fracture toughness testing that are based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. General principles are discussed in relation to the basic two-dimensional crack stress field model and in relation to real three-dimensional specimens. The designs and necessary dimensions of specimens for mixed mode and opening mode (plane strain) crack toughness measurement are considered in detail. Methods of test instrumentation and procedure are described. Expressions for the calculation of crack toughness values are given for the common types of specimens.
