Book Foliations and the Geometry of 3 Manifolds

Download or read book Foliations and the Geometry of 3 Manifolds written by Danny Calegari and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2007-05-17 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique reference, aimed at research topologists, gives an exposition of the 'pseudo-Anosov' theory of foliations of 3-manifolds. This theory generalizes Thurston's theory of surface automorphisms and reveals an intimate connection between dynamics, geometry and topology in 3 dimensions. Significant themes returned to throughout the text include the importance of geometry, especially the hyperbolic geometry of surfaces, the importance of monotonicity, especially in1-dimensional and co-dimensional dynamics, and combinatorial approximation, using finite combinatorical objects such as train-tracks, branched surfaces and hierarchies to carry more complicated continuous objects.

Book Algebraic Geometry Salt Lake City 2015

Download or read book Algebraic Geometry Salt Lake City 2015 written by Tommaso de Fernex and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Part 1 of a two-volume set. Since Oscar Zariski organized a meeting in 1954, there has been a major algebraic geometry meeting every decade: Woods Hole (1964), Arcata (1974), Bowdoin (1985), Santa Cruz (1995), and Seattle (2005). The American Mathematical Society has supported these summer institutes for over 50 years. Their proceedings volumes have been extremely influential, summarizing the state of algebraic geometry at the time and pointing to future developments. The most recent Summer Institute in Algebraic Geometry was held July 2015 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, sponsored by the AMS with the collaboration of the Clay Mathematics Institute. This volume includes surveys growing out of plenary lectures and seminar talks during the meeting. Some present a broad overview of their topics, while others develop a distinctive perspective on an emerging topic. Topics span both complex algebraic geometry and arithmetic questions, specifically, analytic techniques, enumerative geometry, moduli theory, derived categories, birational geometry, tropical geometry, Diophantine questions, geometric representation theory, characteristic and -adic tools, etc. The resulting articles will be important references in these areas for years to come.

Book Laminations and Foliations in Dynamics Geometry and Topology

Download or read book Laminations and Foliations in Dynamics Geometry and Topology written by Mikhail Lyubich and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on a conference held at SUNY, Stony Brook (NY). The concepts of laminations and foliations appear in a diverse number of fields, such as topology, geometry, analytic differential equations, holomorphic dynamics, and renormalization theory. Although these areas have developed deep relations, each has developed distinct research fields with little interaction among practitioners. The conference brought together the diverse points of view of researchers from different areas. This book includes surveys and research papers reflecting the broad spectrum of themes presented at the event. Of particular interest are the articles by F. Bonahon, "Geodesic Laminations on Surfaces", and D. Gabai, "Three Lectures on Foliations and Laminations on 3-manifolds", which are based on minicourses that took place during the conference.

Book Holomorphic Foliations with Singularities

Download or read book Holomorphic Foliations with Singularities written by Bruno Scárdua and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise textbook gathers together key concepts and modern results on the theory of holomorphic foliations with singularities, offering a compelling vision on how the notion of foliation, usually linked to real functions and manifolds, can have an important role in the holomorphic world, as shown by modern results from mathematicians as H. Cartan, K. Oka, T. Nishino, and M. Suzuki. The text starts with a gentle presentation of the classical notion of foliations, advancing to holomorphic foliations and then holomorphic foliations with singularities. The theory behind reduction of singularities is described in detail, as well the cases for dynamics of a local diffeomorphism and foliations on complex projective spaces. A final chapter brings recent questions in the field, as holomorphic flows on Stein spaces and transversely homogeneous holomorphic foliations, along with a list of open questions for further study and research. Selected exercises at the end of each chapter help the reader to grasp the theory. Graduate students in Mathematics with a special interest in the theory of foliations will especially benefit from this book, which can be used as supplementary reading in Singularity Theory courses, and as a resource for independent study on this vibrant field of research.

Book Recent Developments in Geometry

Download or read book Recent Developments in Geometry written by Robert Everist Greene and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the outgrowth of a Special Session on Geometry, held at the November 1987 meeting of the AMS at the University of California at Los Angeles. The unusually well-attended session attracted more than sixty participants and featured over forty addresses by some of the day's outstanding geometers. By common consent, it was decided that the papers to be collected in the present volume should be surveys of relatively broad areas of geometry, rather than detailed presentations of new research results. A comprehensive survey of the field is beyond the scope of a volume such as this. Nonetheless, the editors have sought to provide all geometers, whatever their specialties, with some insight into recent developments in a variety of topics in this active area of research.

Book Complex Dynamics and Geometry

Download or read book Complex Dynamics and Geometry written by Dominique Cerveau and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last twenty years, the theory of holomorphic dynamical systems has had a resurgence of activity, particularly concerning the fine analysis of Julia sets associated with polynomials and rational maps in one complex variable. At the same time, closely related theories have had a similar rapid development, for example the qualitative theory of differential equations in the complex domain. The meeting, ``Etat de la recherche'', held at Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, presented the current state of the art in this area, emphasizing the unity linking the various sub-domains. This volume contains four survey articles corresponding to the talks presented at this meeting. D. Cerveau describes the structure of polynomial differential equations in the complex plane, focusing on the local analysis in neighborhoods of singular points. E. Ghys surveys the theory of laminations by Riemann surfaces which occur in many dynamical or geometrical situations. N. Sibony describes the present state of the generalization of the Fatou-Julia theory for polynomial or rational maps in two or more complex dimensions. Lastly, the talk by J.-C. Yoccoz, written by M. Flexor, considers polynomials of degree $2$ in one complex variable, and in particular, with the hyperbolic properties of these polynomials centered around the Jakobson theorem. This is a general introduction that gives a basic history of holomorphic dynamical systems, demonstrating the numerous and fruitful interactions among the topics. In the spirit of the ``Etat de la recherche de la SMF'' meetings, the articles are written for a broad mathematical audience, especially students or mathematicians working in different fields. This book is translated from the French edition by Leslie Kay.

Book An Introduction to Extremal Kahler Metrics

Download or read book An Introduction to Extremal Kahler Metrics written by Gábor Székelyhidi and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-06-19 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic problem in differential geometry is to find canonical metrics on manifolds. The best known example of this is the classical uniformization theorem for Riemann surfaces. Extremal metrics were introduced by Calabi as an attempt at finding a higher-dimensional generalization of this result, in the setting of Kähler geometry. This book gives an introduction to the study of extremal Kähler metrics and in particular to the conjectural picture relating the existence of extremal metrics on projective manifolds to the stability of the underlying manifold in the sense of algebraic geometry. The book addresses some of the basic ideas on both the analytic and the algebraic sides of this picture. An overview is given of much of the necessary background material, such as basic Kähler geometry, moment maps, and geometric invariant theory. Beyond the basic definitions and properties of extremal metrics, several highlights of the theory are discussed at a level accessible to graduate students: Yau's theorem on the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics, the Bergman kernel expansion due to Tian, Donaldson's lower bound for the Calabi energy, and Arezzo-Pacard's existence theorem for constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics on blow-ups.

Book Differential Topology Foliations and Group Actions

Download or read book Differential Topology Foliations and Group Actions written by Paul A. Schweitzer and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Topology held at the Pontificia Universidade Catolica in Rio de Janeiro in January 1992. Bringing together about one hundred mathematicians from Brazil and around the world, the workshop covered a variety of topics in differential and algebraic topology, including group actions, foliations, low-dimensional topology, and connections to differential geometry. The main concentration was on foliation theory, but there was a lively exchange on other current topics in topology. The volume contains an excellent list of open problems in foliation research, prepared with the participation of some of the top world experts in this area. Also presented here are two surveys on group actions---finite group actions and rigidity theory for Anosov actions---as well as an elementary survey of Thurston's geometric topology in dimensions 2 and 3 that would be accessible to advanced undergraduates and graduate students.
