What impact does one parent's moving away have on the evaluation? How should an evaluator handle high-conflict divorces? Over the past five to ten years, there has been a significant increase in the use of child custody evaluations by the courts. At the same time, the issues have become more complex and difficult. In this book, the author provides a theoretical and practical understanding of many of the factors that make custody evaluations complex. A key component is the integration of disparate research findings into a comprehensive resource that will enable the evaluator and the court to understand these complex issues. The evolution of the court system from a focus on marriage and divorce inevitably led to the current attention given to one of the effects of marital dissolution, child custody litigation. It is the ongoing hope of the legal system that mental health professionals should find themselves in the unique position to use their expertise to help resolve the challenges of these disputes. On the contrary, however, the entry of mental health professionals in this arena has created considerable controversy. The issues that feed the controversy are multifaceted, and include training, knowledge, and competency; the legitimacy of assessment; ethical considerations; and the need for scientific substantiation of current procedures, policies, and practices. Although the resolution to these unresolved issues is currently out of reach, improved education and training, as well as cross-disciplinary approaches to finding solutions that add confidence to the work, offer hope for significant improvements in this field of work.
