Book Complex Dynamical Systems

Download or read book Complex Dynamical Systems written by Robert L. Devaney and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994-12-20 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last fifteen years, the Mandelbrot set has emerged as one of the most recognizable objects in mathematics. While there is no question of its beauty, relatively few people appreciate the fact that the mathematics behind such images is equally beautiful. This book presents lectures delivered during the AMS Short Course entitled ``Complex Dynamical Systems: The Mathematics Behind the Mandelbrot and Julia Sets'', held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Cincinnati in January 1994. The lectures cover a wide range of topics, including the classical work of Julia and Fatou on local dynamics of analytic maps as well as recent work on the dynamics of quadratic and cubic polynomials, the geometry of Julia sets, and the structure of various parameter spaces. Among the other topics are recent results on Yoccoz puzzles and tableaux, limiting dynamics near parabolic points, the spider algorithm, extensions of the theory to rational maps, Newton's method, and entire transcendental functions. Much of the book is accessible to anyone with a background in the basics of dynamical systems and complex analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bifurcation theory and catastrophe theory are two well-known areas within the field of dynamical systems. Both are studies of smooth systems, focusing on properties that seem to be manifestly non-smooth. Bifurcation theory is concerned with the sudden changes that occur in a system when one or more parameters are varied. Examples of such are familiar to students of differential equations, from phase portraits. Understanding the bifurcations of the differential equations that describe real physical systems provides important information about the behavior of the systems. Catastrophe theory became quite famous during the 1970's, mostly because of the sensation caused by the usually less than rigorous applications of its principal ideas to "hot topics", such as the characterization of personalities and the difference between a "genius" and a "maniac". Catastrophe theory is accurately described as singularity theory and its (genuine) applications. The authors of this book, previously published as Volume 5 of the Encyclopaedia, have given a masterly exposition of these two theories, with penetrating insight.

The theory is developed systematically, starting with first-order differential equations and their bifurcations, followed by phase plane analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations, and culminating with the Lorenz equations, chaos, iterated maps, period doubling, renormalization, fractals, and strange attractors.

Book Analysis and Control of Complex Dynamical Systems

Download or read book Analysis and Control of Complex Dynamical Systems written by Kazuyuki Aihara and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to report on theoretical breakthroughs on control of complex dynamical systems developed by collaborative researchers in the two fields of dynamical systems theory and control theory. As well, its basic point of view is of three kinds of complexity: bifurcation phenomena subject to model uncertainty, complex behavior including periodic/quasi-periodic orbits as well as chaotic orbits, and network complexity emerging from dynamical interactions between subsystems. Analysis and Control of Complex Dynamical Systems offers a valuable resource for mathematicians, physicists, and biophysicists, as well as for researchers in nonlinear science and control engineering, allowing them to develop a better fundamental understanding of the analysis and control synthesis of such complex systems.

Book Dynamical Systems by Example

Download or read book Dynamical Systems by Example written by Luís Barreira and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises an impressive collection of problems that cover a variety of carefully selected topics on the core of the theory of dynamical systems. Aimed at the graduate/upper undergraduate level, the emphasis is on dynamical systems with discrete time. In addition to the basic theory, the topics include topological, low-dimensional, hyperbolic and symbolic dynamics, as well as basic ergodic theory. As in other areas of mathematics, one can gain the first working knowledge of a topic by solving selected problems. It is rare to find large collections of problems in an advanced field of study much less to discover accompanying detailed solutions. This text fills a gap and can be used as a strong companion to an analogous dynamical systems textbook such as the authors’ own Dynamical Systems (Universitext, Springer) or another text designed for a one- or two-semester advanced undergraduate/graduate course. The book is also intended for independent study. Problems often begin with specific cases and then move on to general results, following a natural path of learning. They are also well-graded in terms of increasing the challenge to the reader. Anyone who works through the theory and problems in Part I will have acquired the background and techniques needed to do advanced studies in this area. Part II includes complete solutions to every problem given in Part I with each conveniently restated. Beyond basic prerequisites from linear algebra, differential and integral calculus, and complex analysis and topology, in each chapter the authors recall the notions and results (without proofs) that are necessary to treat the challenges set for that chapter, thus making the text self-contained.
