Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Thomas Nashe, Vol. 6 of 6: The Tragedie of Dido, 1594; Summers Last Will and Testament, 1600; Glossarial-Index, Etc IN our 'memorial-introduction - Biographical' (vol. I., pp. Xi - lxxi) we furnished the 'little all' that has come down to us of the outward life of Thomas Nashe - its main landmarks, - as so frequently, - having been his books lesser and larger. I am under bond to add to the Biographical' a Critical' Introduction. I must fulfil my promise, albeit it was perchance too hastily given; for as one turns back upon the now completed Works, one feels that the Man is too shadowy and unrevealed, and the Writings too hasty and unsubstantive, for anything like elaborate criticism or estimate. And yet the very remarkable things in these hitherto scattered and forgotten books suggest a good deal as to the elizabethan-jacobean period, which will reward the student-reader if he take pains to master them. I propose, as briefly as may be, to indicate certain points and to gather up others, leaving it to those who have a mind to follow along our lines, and mark out (it may be) as many more. Book The Age of Thomas Nashe

Download or read book The Age of Thomas Nashe written by Stephen Guy-Bray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional literary criticism once treated Thomas Nashe as an Elizabethan oddity, difficult to understand or value. He was described as an unrestrained stylist, venomous polemicist, unreliable source, and closet pornographer. But today this flamboyant writer sits at the center of many trends in early modern scholarship. Nashe’s varied output fuels efforts to reconsider print culture and the history of the book, histories of sexuality and pornography, urban culture, the changing nature of patronage, the relationship between theater and print, and evolving definitions of literary authorship and 'literature' as such. This collection brings together a dozen scholars of Elizabethan literature to characterize the current state of Nashe scholarship and shape its emerging future. The Age of Thomas Nashe demonstrates how the works of a restless, improvident, ambitious young writer, driven by radical invention and a desperate search for literary order, can restructure critical thinking about this familiar era. These essays move beyond individual and generic conceptions of authorship to show how Nashe’s career unveils the changing imperatives of literary production in late sixteenth-century England. Thomas Nashe becomes both a marker of the historical milieu of his time and a symbolic pointer gesturing towards emerging features of modern authorship.

Book Collected Critical Writings

Download or read book Collected Critical Writings written by Geoffrey Hill and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-02-29 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Critical Writings of Geoffrey Hill gathers more than forty years of Hill's published criticism, in a revised final form, and also adds much new work. It will serve as the canonical volume of criticism by Hill, the pre-eminent poet-critic whom A. N. Wilson has called 'probably the best writer alive, in verse or in prose'. In his criticism Hill ranges widely, investigating both poets (including Jonson, Dryden, Hopkins, Whitman, Eliot, and Yeats ) and prose writers (such as Tyndale, Clarendon, Hobbes, Burton, Emerson, and F. H. Bradley). He is also steeped in the historical context - political, poetic, and religious - of the writers he studies. Most importantly, he brings texts and contexts into new and telling relations, neither reducing texts to the circumstances of their utterance nor imagining that they can float free of them. A number of the essays have already established themselves as essential reading on particular subjects, such as his analysis of Vaughan's 'The Night', his discussion of Gurney's poetry, and his critical account of The Oxford English Dictionary. Others confront the problems of language and the nature of value directly, as in 'Our Word is Our Bond', 'Language, Suffering, and Value', and 'Poetry and Value'. In all his criticism, Hill reveals literature to be an essential arena of civic intelligence.
