Book excerpt: In this Report we discuss the four complementary searches for the identity of dark matter: direct detection experiments that look for dark matter interacting in the lab, indirect detection experiments that connect lab signals to dark matter in our own and other galaxies, collider experiments that elucidate the particle properties of dark matter, and astrophysical probes sensitive to non-gravitational interactions of dark matter. The complementarity among the different dark matter searches is discussed qualitatively and illustrated quantitatively in several theoretical scenarios. Our primary conclusion is that the diversity of possible dark matter candidates requires a balanced program based on all four of those approaches.

Book excerpt: Searching for Dark Matter with Cosmic Gamma Rays summarizes the evidence for dark matter and what we can learn about its particle nature using cosmic gamma rays. It has almost been 100 years since Fritz Zwicky first detected hints that most of the matter in the Universe that doesn't directly emit or reflect light. Since then, the observational evidence for dark matter has continued to grow. Dark matter may be a new kind of particle that is governed by physics beyond our Standard Model of particle physics. In many models, dark matter annihilation or decay produces gamma rays. There are a variety of instruments observing the gamma-ray sky from tens of MeV to hundreds of TeV. Some make deep, focused observations of small regions, while others provide coverage of the entire sky. Each experiment offers complementary sensitivity to dark matter searches in a variety of target sizes, locations, and dark matter mass scales. We review results from recent gamma-ray experiments including anomalies some have attributed to dark matter. We also discuss how our gamma-ray observations complement other dark matter searches and the prospects for future experiments.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes in detail a search for weakly interacting massive particles as possible dark matter candidates, making use of so-called mono-jet events. It includes a detailed description of the run-1 system, important operational challenges, and the upgrade for run-2. The nature of dark matter, which accounts for roughly 25% of the energy-matter content of the universe, is one of the biggest open questions in fundamental science. The analysis is based on the full set of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at √s = 8 TeV. Special attention is given to the experimental challenges and analysis techniques, as well as the overall scientific context beyond particle physics. The results complement those of non-collider experiments and yield some of the strongest exclusion bounds on parameters of dark matter models by the end of the Large Hadron Collider run-1. Details of the upgrade of the ATLAS Central Trigger for run-2 are also included.

These efforts have resulted in a wealth of experimental knowledge and a rich model space of possible explanations. Dark matter phenomenology stands at the intersection of these efforts, and this thesis contains a series of works that attempt to constrain or construct models based on the empirical data. The first of these works details the insights the initial results of the LHC had on isospin violating dark matter in the context of effective operators. The next work deals with the possible effective operators between Dirac dark matter and photon lines at indirect detection experiments. The third is about a model of light scalar mediators used to explain a possible signal at the CDMS experiment. The fourth and final work concerns itself with a particular annihilation topology generated by dark matter going to on-shell mediators.

Book excerpt: I explore the hypothesis that dark matter is composed of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles, as motivated by various theories which solve the gauge hierarchy problem in the Standard Model of particle physics, and the interplay between various methods which can be sensitive to the presence of such a new particle. I present a model-independent parametrization of dark matter interactions and derive bounds on the various possible interactions from hadron collider studies sensitive to the presence of dark matter as well as from searches for new spectral lines in cosmic gamma rays, comparing the bounds from those two searches to those from direct detection experiments. I find that colliders provide the most strenuous constraints on spin-dependent scattering of dark matter, and that collider and indirect searches are highly complementary with direct detection searches, allowing derivations of the nature of dark matter interactions when a discovery does take place. I also present an exploration of how robust these collider bounds are to corrections from the presence of additional, related particles in the spectrum of new physics. As long as the additional, mediating particles are heavy enough to resonantly produce the final state that is searched for at colliders I find that the bounds from the effective theory are sound.

As a glaring source of new physics beyond the Standard Model, there is a large effort to uncover the quantum nature of dark matter. Many probes have been formed to search for this elusive matter; cultivating a rich environment for a phenomenologist. In addition to the primary probes---colliders, direct detection, and indirect detection---each with their own complexities, there is a plethora of prospects to illuminate our unanswered questions. In this work, phenomenological techniques for studying dark matter and other possible hints of new physics will be discussed. This work primarily focuses on the use of Simplified Models, which are intended to be a compromise between generality and validity of the theoretical description. They are often used to parameterize a particular search, develop a well-defined sense of complementarity between searches, or motivate new search strategies. Explicit examples of such models and how they may be used will be the highlight of each chapter.
