Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth data in the low and intermediate stress range obtained from tests on 2014-T6 aluminum, Ti-6Al-4V and 250 grade maraging steel, and similar data on 7075-T6 and 2024-T3 aluminum available from other investigators were analyzed. This analysis led to the formation of a new model for estimating the threshold stress intensity factor range, which involves the concept of reaching the theoretical strength at the tip of the crack when the critically stressed volume becomes so small that it can no longer contain a defect. Fatigue crack propagation experiments were also conducted in the range of 10 to the minus 7 power and 10 to the minus 9 power in./cycle (2.5 x 10 to the minus 9 power to 2.5 x 10 to the minus 11 power m/cycle) at room temperature and 375 Hz. 7050-T73651 aluminum and D6ac steel *HRC 50) were tested in room air and dry and wet argon, whereas 2014-T6 aluminum and annealed D6ac steel were tested in room air only.

Book excerpt: Fatigue crack propagation and fracture parameters for 2.03-cm-thick compact specimens of an extra-low-interstitial Ti-6Al-4V alloy were measured at temperatures between 295 K (70°F) and 4 K (-453°F). Plane-strain linear-elastic and J-integral fracture toughness test results were in good agreement: the KIc values for this alloy decreased from 105 MN/m3|2 at room temperature to 54 MN/m3vb2 at 4 K, and a ductile-to-brittle fracture transition occurred in the range 125 to 76 K (-235 to -323°F). Despite this transition, the fatigue crack growth rates (da/dN) of this alloy remained temperature insensitive over the entire ambient-to-cryogenic range. These fatigue and fracture results are compared with data previously reported for a normal-interstitial Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue-crack growth data for 2024-T3 aluminum was used to evaluate the accuracy of Forman's equation. Forman's equation was found to predict from one-third to twice the observed cycles to a given crack length when applied to multiple cyclic stress ratios. An alternative approach was developed, based on the observed data, which is applicable to analog or digital fatigue-crack growth prediction. Data acquisition based on constant increment of crack length has been found to yield inadequate definition of the crack-growth curve in the low-cycle range for the successful application of the method. An expression was developed which extends the application of the crack-closure concept to the entire range of cyclic stress ratio. An effective root-mean-square stress was defined which shows indications of good correlation with the magnitude of the crack-growth curves.
