Book The Idea of Progress in Classical Antiquity

Download or read book The Idea of Progress in Classical Antiquity written by Ludwig Edelstein and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1967. Ludwig Edelstein characterizes the idea of "progress" in Greek and Roman times. He analyzes the ancients' belief in "a tendency inherent in nature or in man to pass through a regular sequence of stages of development in past, present, and future, the latter stages being—with perhaps occasional retardations or minor regressions—superior to the earlier." Edelstein's contemporaries asserted that the Greeks and Romans were entirely ignorant of a belief in progress in this sense of the term. In arguing against this dominant thesis, Edelstein draws from the conclusions of scholars of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and discusses ideas of Auguste Comte and Wilhelm Dilthey.

Book Compendium of Grecian Antiquities

Download or read book Compendium of Grecian Antiquities written by Charles D. Cleveland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compendium of Grecian Antiquities The present "Compendium of Grecian Antiquities" has been entirely re-written, and contains nearly three times as much matter as the "Epitome," under which title it first appeared. The author would therefore hope, that it will be found to be improved in some proportion, at least, to the labor and care which have been bestowed upon it. The marginal references, now first introduced, will answer the purpose of questions for examination, while the Index to all the Greek words and phrases will, he trusts, make his work more valuable as a book of reference. The first edition of this work, under the title of "An Epitome of Grecian Antiquities," was published in the Spring of 1827, when I was a senior in Dartmouth College. When Professor of Languages in Dickinson College in this state, it was re-written, enlarged nearly three-fold, and published under the present title. It passed through very many editions, haying been adopted as a text-book in some of the best colleges and academies in the country. Owing to many circumstances which it is unnecessary to mention, (one of which was the failure of the publishing house in Boston,) it went out of print, and, as copies were difficult to be had, consequently out of use. Lately, however, I have come into the possession of the stereotype plates myself, and having had them thoroughly revised, and having corrected some errors in them, I commit the work again to the public, asking for it nothing more than as much favor as for many years it received; for I know not how I could, even now, make a better book upon the same subject. Book Classical Antiquities or a Compendium of Roman and Grecian Antiquities

Download or read book Classical Antiquities or a Compendium of Roman and Grecian Antiquities written by Joseph Salkeld and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classical Antiquities, or a Compendium of Roman and Grecian Antiquities: With a Sketch of Ancient Mythology This work is designed as a manual of Classical Antiquities, and is divided into two parts: the first containing an account of the political institutions, religion, military and naval affairs, arts and sciences, manners, customs, &c., pertaining to the Romans; and the second, those relating to the Grecians. Most of the works in use, which treat of the Antiquities of these celebrated nations, are so copious and so intermingled with Greek or Latin quotations, that, though they may be highly valuable to the classical scholar as works of reference, they are rendered less useful to the classical pupil, as common text-books. There have, it is true, been published, in this country, one or two small volumes in which it is attempted to describe the Antiquities of the Romans, but these works are so contracted in matter as to be either partially or entirely deficient in many important subjects of which they profess to treat. The author has endeavored to adopt a medium course, by avoiding too great copiousness as well as a scanty conciseness of matter, and he trusts his treatise will be found sufficiently comprehensive for general use in academies and high-schools, as well as in colleges. In almost all Greek states, which were usually built upon a hill, rock, or some natural elevation, there was a castle or a citadel, erected upon the highest part of the rock or hill, to which the name of Acropolis, higher or upper city, was given. Thus we read of an acropolis at Athens, Corinth, Argos, Messene, and My other places. The Capitolium at Rome eu swered the same purpose as the Acropolis in the Greek cities; and of the same kind were the tower of Agathocles at Utica, and that of Antonia at Jerusalem. Book Greek History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek History Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Swoboda and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek History Professor swoboda has won so high a rank among students of classical antiquity that it would be superfluous, and indeed presumptuous, for his translator to recall that distinguished scholar's excellent works to the memory of the learned reader; and the little History now presented in English dress, though addressed to a less academic audience, is fully equal to the author's reputation. It has the rare merits of succinctness and lucidity, however imperfectly these ex cellences may be conveyed in translation and in addition it brings the history of Greece down to the present day. To most readers the story of ancient Greece is a fairy tale from olden times, at best half romance, and severed by an im passable chasm from the reality of the modern age. This conception is thoroughly false; the history of the Greeks, like that of the Jews, to which it has manifold points of likeness, has passed without a break from the classical into the imperial, the medieval, and the modern eras, and bids fair to become no mean chapter in the story of the nations that has yet to be unfolded.
