Book Overcoming Burnout and Compassion Fatigue in Schools

Download or read book Overcoming Burnout and Compassion Fatigue in Schools written by Alison L. Dubois and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the cumulative effects of working with high trauma populations as they pertain to education settings. This text incorporates current research, anecdotal stories, and workbook pages so that practitioners are properly informed on how to identify and employ protective practices when it comes to burnout and compassion fatigue. Educators rarely receive training that prepares them for working with children and youth who are the victims of neglect, abuse, poverty, and loss. Education professionals who are already overburdened with an overwhelming number of job-related tasks can find themselves depleted due to their care and concern for their most vulnerable students. As a result, educators experience the physical and emotional symptoms of burnout and compassion fatigue. Appropriate for both young and experienced educators, this important text provides a clear and concise approach to the topic of burnout and compassion fatigue that engages the reader in a journey of self-reflection, highlighting potential signs and symptoms of burnout, as well as examining how the school environment and individual characteristics might collide to put educators at risk. Most importantly, this book provides guidance and resources to assist educators in implementing both individual and organizational practices that promote long-term resilience and self-care. To be at their most effective, educators must be able to care for themselves while also caring for their students.

Book Second Wave Positive Psychology

Download or read book Second Wave Positive Psychology written by Itai Ivtzan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positive psychology is currently equated with theory and research on the positive aspects of life. The reality could not be further from the truth. Positive psychology investigates and researches some of the most difficult and painful experiences. Second Wave Positive Psychology: Embracing the Dark Side of Life is an innovative and groundbreaking textbook that explores a variety of topics we consider to be part of the ‘dark’ side of life while emphasising their role in our positive functioning and transformation as human beings. This more nuanced approach to the notions of ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ can be described as the ‘second wave' of Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology is one of the fastest growing and least understood branches of psychology. Exploring topics at the heart of Positive Psychology, such as meaning, resilience, human development, mortality, change, suffering, and spirituality, this book engages with so-called ‘negative’ matters from a Positive Psychology angle, showing how the path of personal development can involve experiences which, while challenging, can lead to growth, insight, healing and transformation. Containing useful resources, case studies, practical exercises and chapter summaries, Second Wave Positive Psychology is an essential guide for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying positive psychology, as well as clinicians wanting to know more about the subject. It will also be relevant to the layperson who is interested in positive psychology.

Book Compassion Fatigue in Home Care Nurses

Download or read book Compassion Fatigue in Home Care Nurses written by Clarisa Williams Giles and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence of Compassion Fatigue (CF) in home care nurses who visit patients/clients in their home through home hospice, home health and a nurse home visitation program. The setting was a hospital affiliated home care agency in a southern town. Thirty five registered nurses volunteered to participate in this descriptive study. The study investigated the prevalence of compassion fatigue through the use of the fifth revision of the 30-item Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQUOL) Compassion Satisfaction and Compassion Fatigue Scale. A series of crosstab analysis examined the relationship between participant demographics and three ProQUOL version 5 subscales of compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress. There is value in analyzing the prevalence of compassion fatigue in home care nurses in healthcare. Understanding the needs of this population can be beneficial in reducing stress related loss of patient care providers and assist management in developing programs to retain staff.

Book Compassion Fatigue

Download or read book Compassion Fatigue written by Carole Branch and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compassion fatigue is a term used to describe the unique stressors affecting people in care-giving professions (Joinson in 1992). For nurses, the impact of compassion fatigue may result in stress-related symptoms, job dissatisfaction, decreased productivity, patient satisfaction, safety issues, and job turnover. The purposes of this non-experimental descriptive survey using electronic distribution to collect data were to identify the prevalence of compassion fatigue composed of burnout and secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction among nurses and nursing staff who deliver direct patient care at the hospital and the relationship between demographic variables (age, work category, level of education, work experience) and the presence of compassion fatigue, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction on selected nursing care units at a Midwest pediatric hospital. Swanson's (1991) Caring Theory was used to guide this study. Compassion fatigue was normally distributed throughout the sample. Results demonstrated that nurses who work on the cardiology unit had higher compassion satisfaction scores than nurses who worked in the pediatric intensive care unit, cardiothoracic care unit and the emergency unit. Nurses working in the pediatric intensive care unit had higher secondary traumatic stress scores than nurses who work in the emergency unit and cardiology unit. Additionally, nurses who worked in the pediatric intensive care unit reflected lower compassion satisfaction scores as well as higher burn out and secondary traumatic stress scores than nurses in all of the other nursing care units studied. Compassion satisfaction, burn-out and secondary traumatic stress scores did not statistically differ by age, work category, level of education, or work experience. The results of this study demonstrate the existence of compassion fatigue at a Midwest pediatric hospital. This study provided data necessary to develop a program addressing compassion fatigue at this hospital. Results also suggest that nurses who work in the pediatric intensive care unit must be a priority group targeted for immediate intervention.

Book Exploring Compassion Fatigue Risk in Certified Child Life Specialists

Download or read book Exploring Compassion Fatigue Risk in Certified Child Life Specialists written by Bethany L. Fisackerly and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the pediatric health-care environment medical teams are becoming increasingly reliant on the efforts of certified child life specialists to decrease the stress for patients and their families. Research on related professions has revealed that engaging in therapeutic relationships with traumatized patients can place workers at risk for a condition called compassion fatigue. The present study explores how compassion fatigue, and related conditions, affects child life specialists, as well as identifying possible protective variables. One hundred and fifty four certified Child Life Specialists took an online survey that contained items measuring social support, self-care practices, and professional quality of life. Analyses revealed that risk levels for compassion fatigue in this field are comparable to related professions and that high levels of self care, social support and satisfaction in one's job (compassion satisfaction) are related to lower risk for compassion fatigue and other conditions. Implications of these findings for future research and in developing preventative measures are discussed.

Book Prevalence of Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses

Download or read book Prevalence of Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses written by Kelly M. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working directly with children receiving health-care services exposes pediatric nurses to patients'/families' pain and suffering. Repeated exposure to children's pain and suffering can lead to compassion fatigue. Scant literature describes either (a) the prevalence of compassion fatigue among pediatric nurses or (b) the personal, experiential, or work factors contributing to compassion fatigue. The purposes of this study were three-fold: first, to examine the prevalence of compassion fatigue among pediatric nurses in free-standing pediatric hospitals; second, to explore personal, experiential, and work characteristics as potential antecedents to compassion fatigue; and third, to determine whether or not these antecedents can help identify nurses with compassion fatigue or proclivity for compassion fatigue. A descriptive correlational research design was utilized. Established self-report survey instruments were used to gather information from nurses working at least fifty percent of their time in clinical care. The Professional Quality of Life Inventory was utilized for the variables of compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and compassion satisfaction. The Differentiation of Self and Role Inventory was utilized to assess self/role differentiation. The response rate was 16% (n=463). Compassion fatigue was present in 11% of the total sample. Multiple linear regression identified three predictor variables statistically significantly related to high compassion fatigue: education below a BSN (p=.01), differentiation of self and role (p
