A certain degree of unsteadiness always accompanies the flow over an airfoil or other streamlined body at high angle of attack, but the stall of a lifting surface undergoing unsteady motion is even more complex than static stall. Dynamic stall remains a major unsolved problem with a variety of current applications in aeronautics, hydrodynamics, and wind engineering. This report summarizes the main physical features of the phenomenon and the attempts that have been made to predict it. The information presented is drawn mainly from recent review articles and investigations by the author and his colleagues. Since a large fraction of the existing knowledge has come from experimental research, the details of dynamic stall are discussed principally in physical terms.

The classification enables engineers to identify all possible sources of excitation in a given system and to assess potential dangers. This graduate-level text presents a synthesis of research results and practical experience from disparate fields in the form of engineering guidelines. It is particularly geared toward assessing the possible sources of excitation in a flow system, in identifying the actual danger spots, and in finding appropriate remedial measures or cures. Flow-induced vibrations are presented in terms of their basic elements: body oscillators, fluid oscillators, and sources of excitation. By stressing these basic elements, the authors provide a basis for the transfer of knowledge from one system to another, as well as from one engineering field to another. In this manner, well-known theories on cylinders in cross-flow or well-executed solutions from the field of wind engineering--to name just two examples--may be useful in other systems or fields on which information is scarce. The aerodynamic forces were modeled by using the ONERA aerodynamic formulation. The ONERA aerodynamic model, a semi-empirical, unsteady, nonlinear model, was reformulated into a harmonic balance form. Fitting of the ONERA aerodynamic formulation was required to incorporate the model into the analysis. The model was fitted to experimental aerodynamic stall flutter characteristics of NACA 0012 airfoil obtained by McAlister, Pucci, McCroskey and Carr. A linear flutter analysis was performed using the U-g method as a basis for comparison with the stall flutter formulation. Nonlinear flutter calculations were done by applying the harmonic balance method to the flutter equations and solving by the Newton-Raphson technique. The results yielded nonlinear limit cycle oscillations which exhibited the expected trends. As the root angle of attack increased, the flutter speed decreased, while the flutter frequency increased toward the torsional natural frequency. The analytic results compared favorably with previous experimental works by Dunn. The current nonlinear analysis procedure seems an effective technique for analyzing stall flutter phenomena.
