Book Notch Effects in Fatigue and Fracture

Download or read book Notch Effects in Fatigue and Fracture written by G. Pluvinage and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Directors of this NATO Workshop, we welcome this opportunity to record formally our thanks to the NATO Scientific Affairs Division for making our meeting possible through generous financial support and encouragement. This meeting has two purposes: the first obvious one because we have collected scientists from East, far East and west to discuss new development in the field of fracture mechanics: the notch fracture mechanics. The second is less obvious but perhaps in longer term more important that is the building of bridges between scientists in the frame of a network called Without Walls Institute on Notch Effects in Fatigue and Fracture". Physical perception of notch effects is not so easy to understand as the presence of a geometrical discontinuity as a worst effect than the simple reduction of cross section. Notch effects in fatigue and fracture is characterised by the following fundamental fact: it is not the maximum local stress or stress which governs the phenomena of fatigue and fracture. The physic shows that a process volume is needed probably to store the necessary energy for starting and propagating the phenomenon. This is a rupture of the traditional "strength of material" school which always give the prior importance of the local maximum stress. This concept of process volume was strongly affirmed during this workshop.

Book Aircraft Sustainment and Repair

Download or read book Aircraft Sustainment and Repair written by Rhys Jones and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft Sustainment and Repair is a one-stop-shop for practitioners and researchers in the field of aircraft sustainment, adhesively bonded aircraft joints, bonded composites repairs, and the application of cold spray to military and civil aircraft. Outlining the state-of-the-art in aircraft sustainment, this book covers the use of quantitative fractography to determine the in-service crack length versus flight hours curve, the effect of intergranular cracking on structural integrity and the structural significance of corrosion. The book additionally illustrates the potential of composite repairs and SPD applications to metallic airframes. Covers corrosion damage assessment and management in aircraft structures Includes a key chapter on U.S. developments in the emerging field of supersonic particle deposition (SPD) Shows how to design and assess the potential benefits of both bonded composite repairs and SPD repairs to metallic aircraft structures to meet the damage tolerance requirements inherent in FAA ac 20-107b and the U.S. Joint Services

Book Stress Intensity Factor Equations for Cracks in Three Dimensional Finite Bodies

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factor Equations for Cracks in Three Dimensional Finite Bodies written by JC. Newman and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents empirical stress-intensity factor equations for embedded elliptical cracks, semielliptical surface cracks, quarterelliptical corner cracks, semielliptical surface cracks at a hole, and quarterelliptical corner cracks at a hole in finite plates subjected to remote tensile loading. These equations give stress-intensity factors as a function of parametric angle, crack depth, crack length, plate thickness, and, where applicable, hole radius. The stress-intensity factors used to develop the equations were obtained from current and previous three-dimensional finite-element analyses of these crack configurations. A wide range of configuration parameters was included in the equations. The ratio of crack depth to plate thickness ranged from 0 to 1, the ratio of crack depth to crack length ranged from 0.2 to 2, and the ratio of hole radius to plate thickness ranged from 0.5 to 2. The effects of plate width on stress-intensity variations along the crack front also were included, but generally were based on engineering estimates. For all combinations of parameters investigated, the empirical equations were generally within 5 percent of the finite-element results, except within a thin "boundary layer" where the crack front intersects a free surface. However, the proposed equations are expected to give a good estimate in this region because of a study made on the boundary-layer effect. These equations should be useful for correlating and predicting fatigue crack growth rates as well as in computing fracture toughness and fracture loads for these types of crack configurations.

Book Dynamic Fracture Mechanics

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Mechanics written by P. H. Wen and published by Computational Mechanics. This book was released on 1996 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work describes the formulation and numerical implementation of both two- and three-dimensional indirect boundary element methods (for example, the fictitious load method and the displacement discontinuity method). It also provides an analysis of crack problems in elastostatic and elastodynamic fracture mechanics, and methods for evaluating weight functions for dynamic problems.

Book Tabulated Stress Intensity Factors for Corner Cracks at Holes Under Stress Gradients

Download or read book Tabulated Stress Intensity Factors for Corner Cracks at Holes Under Stress Gradients written by AF. Grandt and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this paper is to present stress-intensity factors, K, for corner cracks at holes in a tabulated format which can be used to calculate K for general stress fields. Stress-intensity factors were obtained with the weight function method for various stress gradients and crack sizes. The paper also describes a superposition procedure to generate K for general stress distributions by using the data presented. This tabulated information is intended to expand the existing database of reference stress-intensity factors. Results were compared with other published solutions in order to evaluate the analysis procedure. In general, the difference between solutions was within 10%.
