Book Theoretical and Practical Aspects of Ant Colony Optimization

Download or read book Theoretical and Practical Aspects of Ant Colony Optimization written by Christian Blum and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorial optimization problems are of high academical and practical importance. Unfortunately, many of them belong to the class of NP-hard problems and are therefore intractable. In other words, as their dimension increases, the time needed by exact methods to find an optimal solution grows exponentially. Metaheuristics are approximate methods for attacking these problems. An approximate method is a technique that is applied in order to find a good enough solution in a reasonable amount of time. Examples of metaheuristics are simulated annealing, tabu search, evolutionary computation, and ant colony optimization (ACO), the subject of this book. The contributions of this book to ACO research are twofold. First, some new theoretical results are proven that improve our understanding of how ACO works. Second, a new framework for ACO algorithms is proposed that is shown to perform at the state-of-the-art level on some important combinatorial optimization problems such as the k-cardinality tree problem and the group shop scheduling problem, which is a general shop scheduling problem that includes among others the well-known job shop scheduling and the open shop scheduling problems.

Book Automatic Control Robotics and Information Processing

Download or read book Automatic Control Robotics and Information Processing written by Piotr Kulczycki and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 843 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a wide and comprehensive range of issues and problems in various fields of science and engineering, from both theoretical and applied perspectives. The desire to develop more effective and efficient tools and techniques for dealing with complex processes and systems has been a natural inspiration for the emergence of numerous fields of science and technology, in particular control and automation and, more recently, robotics. The contributions gathered here concern the development of methods and algorithms to determine best practices regarding broadly perceived decisions or controls. From an engineering standpoint, many of them focus on how to automate a specific process or complex system. From a tools-based perspective, several contributions address the development of analytic and algorithmic methods and techniques, devices and systems that make it possible to develop and subsequently implement the automation and robotization of crucial areas of human activity. All topics discussed are illustrated with sample applications.

Book Nature Inspired Cooperative Strategies for Optimization NICSO 2008

Download or read book Nature Inspired Cooperative Strategies for Optimization NICSO 2008 written by Natalio Krasnogor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration from Biology and the Natural Evolution process has become a research area within computer science. For instance, the description of the arti?cial neuron given by McCulloch and Pitts was inspired from biological observations of neural mechanisms; the power of evolution in nature in the diverse species that make up our world has been related to a particular form of problem solving based on the idea of survival of the ?ttest; similarly, - ti?cial immune systems, ant colony optimisation, automated self-assembling programming, membrane computing, etc. also have their roots in natural phenomena. The ?rst and second editions of the International Workshop on Nature Inspired Cooperative Strategies for Optimization (NICSO), were held in Granada, Spain, 2006, and in Acireale, Italy, 2007, respectively. As in these two previous editions, the aim of NICSO 2008, held in Tenerife, Spain, was to provide a forum were the latest ideas and state of the art research related to nature inspired cooperative strategies for problem solving were discussed. The contributions collected in this book were strictly peer reviewed by at least three members of the international programme committee, to whom we are indebted for their support and assistance. The topics covered by the contributionsincludenature-inspiredtechniqueslikeGeneticAlgorithms,Ant Colonies, Amorphous Computing, Arti?cial Immune Systems, Evolutionary Robotics, Evolvable Systems, Membrane Computing, Quantum Computing, Software Self Assembly, Swarm Intelligence, etc.

Book Nature Inspired Computing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature-Inspired Computing: Physics and Chemistry-Based Algorithms provides a comprehensive introduction to the methodologies and algorithms in nature-inspired computing, with an emphasis on applications to real-life engineering problems. The research interest for Nature-inspired Computing has grown considerably exploring different phenomena observed in nature and basic principles of physics, chemistry, and biology. The discipline has reached a mature stage and the field has been well-established. This endeavour is another attempt at investigation into various computational schemes inspired from nature, which are presented in this book with the development of a suitable framework and industrial applications. Designed for senior undergraduates, postgraduates, research students, and professionals, the book is written at a comprehensible level for students who have some basic knowledge of calculus and differential equations, and some exposure to optimization theory. Due to the focus on search and optimization, the book is also appropriate for electrical, control, civil, industrial and manufacturing engineering, business, and economics students, as well as those in computer and information sciences. With the mathematical and programming references and applications in each chapter, the book is self-contained, and can also serve as a reference for researchers and scientists in the fields of system science, natural computing, and optimization.
