Book excerpt: The main objective of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of three different displacement-based methods for seismic design of ordinary standard bridges. Two bridges previously designed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) engineers following the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design are selected and investigated in this study. Two different support conditions are considered, one employing seat-type abutments with rigid bent foundations; and the second employing stub wall abutment with flexible bent foundations (Nonlinear Spring Support Configuration). In addition to the AASHTO Specifications, the analysis methods include the capacity-demand-diagram method, as an inelastic demand Capacity Demand Method (CSM), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 440 Procedure C as an equivalent linearization CSM. Pushover analysis methods are used to construct the capacity diagram of the system. Furthermore, the usability of the three most widely used software programs (SAP2000, ADINA, and OpenSees) for performing the displacement-based seismic analysis is studied.This research will provide TDOT engineers with the necessary information on which procedure is the best approach to use for design of highway bridges. Also, it provides information on how well previously designed bridges response when analyzed with the new displacement-based procedures. And finally, it will provide the TDOT engineers with information on capabilities and limitations of various software packages.

Indeed, progress has been made lately in design and assessment procedures around the world, and consequently many practices have changed. In this context, the objective of fib Bulletin 39 is to present, discuss and critically compare structural solutions for bridge seismic design and retrofit that have been developed and are now used all over the world, ten years after the publication of the last comprehensive manual on the subject. It is the result of the work of an international team of experts that collaborated intensively for over three years. The first four chapters of the Bulletin present a regional review of design choices, compare and discuss international design practices, and indicate their relative merits and potential problems. Current developments are treated in the next three chapters, with particular emphasis on design for enhanced damage control, for spatial variation of ground motion and for fault crossing. The last part presents a summary of current issues related to existing bridges. Extensive technical developments have been taking place in the last two decades with the goal of making bridges an important transportation infrastructure with limited damage during earthquakes. Realising this goal depends on regional seismicity, transportation systems, seismic performance goals, local cultures, and a wide range of design and construction practices, which are presented and discussed in this Bulletin.

Book excerpt: There are a large number of bridges throughout the United States in need of repair or replacement to resolve structural or operational deficiencies. In replacing these structures, and constructing new bridges, engineers should utilize these construction opportunities to improve the design, construction and performance of new structures. This dissertation focuses on three distinct means for improving bridge systems throughout the U.S. First, improve the seismic response of bridge systems using controlled rocking of bridge piers. Second, improve the constructability of bridges in high seismic regions by development of a validated superstructure system for accelerated construction. Third, improve seismic design through the implementation of a simplified displacement based design approach. Controlled rocking in bridge piers can provide a method of seismic resistance that results in significantly less damage following strong ground shaking. Simplified and detailed design and response prediction methods are presented in this dissertation. These methods were validated against three beam-column experiments. Results from experimental work and analytical prediction models were used to perform a series of nonlinear time history analyses. These results indicate the use of controlled rocking will result in similar ultimate displacement demands with appreciably less residual displacement as compared to conventional systems. Use of precast concrete systems in high seismic regions has been limited due to uncertainties in the performance of connections between elements. A conceptual bridge system was developed, designed and validated through experimental testing to determine the adequacy of the details for seismic applications. This experimental work included the consideration of potential superstructure inelasticity due to relative settlement or vertical motion. Results indicated the capacity of the connection could be adequately predicted using strain-compatibility approaches considering effects of construction staging. Experimental testing validated the system has adequate rotation capacity to accommodate potential demands from relative settlement and vertical motion from relative settlement and vertical motion. A displacement based design procedure is presented which is aimed at the efficient allocation of reinforcing steel in concrete columns for seismic design. This procedure uses established displacement modification factors in combination with mechanics based displacement capacities to derive minimum design resistance require for a column under seismic actions.

Fardis and printed by the IUSS Press of the Istituto Universitario Superiore di Pavia. The report is divided into three sections. The first section addresses the problem of the Displacement Based Evaluation/Design (DBE/D) of reinforced concrete bridges, focusing on the aims and limitations of current seismic evaluation and design practice and the tendencies of the displacement-based seismic evaluation/design methods. The second section presents the secant stiffness and equivalent viscous damping properties of reinforced concrete hollow rectangular bridge piers, both evaluated at maximum pier displacement, representing a significant design tool of direct application to the DBD of bridges, based on the concept of a substitute linear structure as originally defined by Gulkan and Sozen in 1967s. The third section addresses how to determine the deformability or stiffness of bridge piers resulting from the relative contributions of flexural and shear deformations, thus complementing the information given in the first two sections, necessary to complete the performance based design and assessment of a bridge.
