Mehalik and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzed gambling behaviors among Club/Intramural/Recreational (CIR) athletes attending state and private universities in Southwestern Pennsylvania. More specifically, the researcher examined CIR student athlete’s gambling behavior and participation in gambling activities at Division II institutions, including mid-sized state/public colleges or universities, and Division III institutions, including small private colleges or universities. Using a Survey Research Design, this study identified significant group differences in gambling involvement, types of gambling students participate in, and gambling related issues/problems across CIR student athlete/nonathlete populations as well as across Division II and III institutions. This study fills a gap in academic literature pertaining to gambling behavior and CIR athletes. Additionally, this research study adds to the existing literature to help better understand gambling behaviors, problem gambling, and pathological gambling occurring with college students. The findings of this study have the ability to impact the way gambling prevention programs are presented and administered to college students and specific student populations.

Book The Changing Landscape of Gambling Among College Student athletes

Download or read book The Changing Landscape of Gambling Among College Student athletes written by Rayna Sansanwal and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Given the rise in the availability, accessibility, and appeal of gambling activities, gambling as a high-risk behaviour has become a major concern among college students. Student-athletes, in particular, represent a vulnerable subgroup of the college student population with regards to engagement in gambling activities, as prevalence studies have consistently indicated that student-athletes who participate in club or intercollegiate sports are significantly more likely to experience gambling-related problems than their non-athletic counterparts. This thesis is comprised of two manuscripts that aimed to extend current research regarding gambling behaviours and attitudes among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes by conducting a cross comparison of survey data collected from three large samples of NCAA student-athletes in 2004, 2008, and 2012 regarding gambling behaviours and attitudes in order to gain insight into how the landscape of gambling and attitudes among college student-athletes has changed within the last eight-years in relation to the ongoing expansion of gambling opportunities. The first manuscript paid particular attention to gender and sport affiliation differences; while the second manuscript focused on divisional differences. It was expected that student-athletes would progressively show more pro-gambling attitudes towards over the eight-year span, which would result in an increase in gambling participation rates between 2004 and 2012. Results indicated that gambling, as a recreational activity, was perceived as being more acceptable in 2012 than in previous years. However, despite this surge in pro-gambling attitudes, gambling participation rates were generally lowest for all gambling activities in 2012. Therefore, the results suggest that in spite of the growth of the gambling industry, gambling activity among student-athletes is on a downward trend. Outcomes of the current research not only inform NCAA policies surrounding gambling, but also aid in the development of educational, prevention, and intervention initiatives at the college level. Book College Student Athletes

Download or read book College Student Athletes written by Michael T. Miller and published by IAP. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a critical and objective study of the contemporary college student athlete. Framed around the process of recruitment, transition, and support of student athletes in higher education, the volume is a response to societal pressures to reform college athletics. Driven by publicity and the potential for revenue gains, colleges and universities have invested heavily in developing athletic programs, coaches, and facilities. Yet few resources are invested strategically in the personal and intellectual development of student athletes. Written by a team of authors with first-hand experience working with student athletes and transitional programs, the volume argues that institutional attention must be directed at caring for the personal and intellectual growth of student athletes. Highlighting some best-practice curricula and exploring the psychological issues surrounding participating in often highly-competitive athletics, the authors consistently conclude that institutional responsibility is of the utmost and immediate importance. Authors also consider the unique settings of student athletes in community and private liberal arts colleges, demonstrating the broad interest in athletics and institutional competition. The result is an important volume that will be of interest to those who counsel and administer intercollegiate athletic programs, faculty and researchers looking for insightful baseline data on the contemporary student athlete, and those concerned with transitional programs and the future of higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gambling has always been a part of the human experience, and it is arguably now more popular than ever around the world. Fueled by changes in communication, commerce, and cultural values, gambling opportunities are seemingly ubiquitous. It is not surprising-given this societal context, students' perceptions regarding money, and their developmental stages-that many of them are engaged in gambling activity to one degree or another. Evidence suggests, however, that many in higher education remain unaware of the extent of the gambling activity in which students (and members of the staff and faculty for that matter) are engaged, the extent of problem gambling and pathological gambling among students, and the potential consequences of campus gambling for students and institutions. It has been noted that this generation of students grew up in an era when gambling was always commonplace and widely accepted. Given our history, the current popularity of gambling, and the role of gaming in the marketplace, it appears likely that gambling activity will continue to be a part of campus life. This volume of New Directions for Student Services offers information, suggestions for research, frameworks for policy development, and models for practice related to campus gambling. We hope it proves useful to students and faculty in higher education graduate preparation programs, student affairs professionals, other members of the higher education community, and all those interested in supporting student success. This is the 113th issue of the Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Student Services.

Book Coming to Grips with Higher Education

Download or read book Coming to Grips with Higher Education written by Michael T. Nietzel and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American university faces many challenges. It has become too costly and inefficient. It fails too many students. It spends too much time and money on matters that should not be its priorities. It clings to policies and practices that need to go away. And it is too disconnected from the students and communities it must serve. This book proposes several changes to standard policies in our colleges and universities that will sharpen their missions, redirect funding to the highest priorities, improve student learning and attainment, redefine faculty engagement, slow down spending on amenities, and reduce the excesses of intercollegiate athletics. The recommended reforms remain true to the essential academic values embraced by the academy, but at the same time they recognize and respond to the new realities facing higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The globalizing influence of professional sports Professional sports today have truly become a global force, a common language that anyone, regardless of their nationality, can understand. Yet sports also remain distinctly local, with regional teams and the fiercely loyal local fans that follow them. This book examines the twenty-first-century phenomenon of global sports, in which professional teams and their players have become agents of globalization while at the same time fostering deep-seated and antagonistic local allegiances and spawning new forms of cultural conflict and prejudice. Andrei Markovits and Lars Rensmann take readers into the exciting global sports scene, showing how soccer, football, baseball, basketball, and hockey have given rise to a collective identity among millions of predominantly male fans in the United States, Europe, and around the rest of the world. They trace how these global—and globalizing—sports emerged from local pastimes in America, Britain, and Canada over the course of the twentieth century, and how regionalism continues to exert its divisive influence in new and potentially explosive ways. Markovits and Rensmann explore the complex interplay between the global and the local in sports today, demonstrating how sports have opened new avenues for dialogue and shared interest internationally even as they reinforce old antagonisms and create new ones. Gaming the World reveals the pervasive influence of sports on our daily lives, making all of us citizens of an increasingly cosmopolitan world while affirming our local, regional, and national identities.

Book Athletics in the Academic Marketplace

Download or read book Athletics in the Academic Marketplace written by Scott Hirko and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reviewed publicly available institutional financial and participation reports at the highest level of athletic competition, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. Institutions were grouped by NCAA subdivision status, athletic conference, flagship status, football Bowl Championship Series automatic qualifying status, and several athletic expenses categories. Growth rates between 2005 and 2011 were compared in instructional salaries, tuition rates, athletic coaching salaries, and costs of instruction. Revenue theory of cost and resource dependency theory related these costs within the context of institutional identity to explicate the marketplace of athletics compared to academics in higher education. Descriptive statistics, correlations, ANOVAs, and visual representations were used to analyze the data. The study found the growth rate of total athletic coaching salaries and football coaching salaries far exceeded the corresponding growth rate for instructional salaries and tuition rates at a significant level in all groupings of institutions with major college sports programs. The following are appended: (1) Institutions listed by category; (2) Growth rates of variables by category; (3) Correlation of growth in variables by category; (4) Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of variables by category; and (5) Paired t-tests of instructional salaries and football salaries by category. (Contains 4 tables and 5 figures.).

Download or read book The Gambling Debate written by Richard McGowan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great majority of Americans—more than 80%—say they approve of gambling, even if they themselves don't gamble. Still, deep divisions persist in our attitudes toward the gambling industry. Is it profoundly destructive, preying on human weakness and stripping its victims of their sustenance and dignity? Or is it a vehicle of the American dream—an engine of personal enrichment, enormous public revenue, and economic development? The industry's explosive growth has sharpened the debate, radically altering the gambling landscape and dramatically raising the stakes involved. Author Richard A. McGowan, a respected authority on the public-policy aspects of gambling and other sin industries, reveals the new dynamics of gambling and frames the age-old ethical and practical questions it poses. Whether benefit or bane, gambling today permeates American culture in unprecedented ways. Its newest venues—Native American tribal casinos and the Internet—are drawing in new gamblers in vast numbers and generating spectacular profits. Social, legal, and political controversies inevitably have followed. How should public policymakers approach expanded gambling? As regulator of the gambling industry, government has always been the gatekeeper. Its role and responsibilities remain central to the gambling debate, even while it stands to reap huge windfalls from the very industry it is regulating. Meanwhile, Internet gambling, more or less regulated at home, has found willing government sponsors abroad—removing an ever-larger segment of the industry from U.S. government jurisdiction and recasting the gambling debate. Using this book, citizens can: Learn the ethical and rhetorical framework of the gambling debate. The terms of the arguments advanced by advocates and opponents help explain why the gambling industry has been tolerated or encouraged by public policymakers. Weigh the risks and rewards of government-sanctioned gambling through three actual case studies, from Missouri, Massachusetts, and the Chinese island of Macao—which in 2006 surpassed Las Vegas as the gambling capital of the world. Each situation highlights particular problems and opportunities, and each is presented with discussion questions. Take an informed position: Should sports gambling be legalized? Should U.S. restrictions on Internet gambling be loosened? Should government get out of the gambling business altogether? Find out more about the many facets of the gambling debate by using the study resources provided.
