Book Comparative Criminal Procedure Through Film

Download or read book Comparative Criminal Procedure Through Film written by Samuel W. Bettwy and published by . This book was released on 2015-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook describes analytical tools for studying comparative criminal procedure through film and provides summaries of the law of 50 countries and of over 270 films that depict criminal procedure in action in those countries. The traditional tools of comparative analysis include the inquisitorial-adversarial dichotomy, role-specific constructs and the Civil Law-Common Law dichotomy. In addition, differences in criminal procedure can be examined through the socialist, Islamic and indigenous legal traditions and through the evolving international legal regimes. The tools of comparative legal analysis are applied to examine the adjudicative process through film, beginning with police contact with a crime suspect and ending either with a judge or jury's acquittal or with execution of sentence. The law summaries describe the distinctive criminal procedure of each legal tradition and of each country within those traditions. For each country, the film summaries describe background information about the film and the filmmaker, the plot of the film as a whole and the legal story contained within. The textbook is designed for teaching law students, but is also suitable for teaching an undergraduate or post-graduate college course in comparative criminal justice. About the author: Samuel W. Bettwy is Adjunct Professor of Law at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, where he has taught Comparative Law since 1995. Professor Bettwy received a J.D. from California Western School of Law, an LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Center, and an M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies, with highest distinction, from the U.S. Naval War College. In 2009, he graduated from the French Army Reserve Staff Officer Course at l'Ecole Militaire in Paris, France. Professor Bettwy has served as a litigating attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice since 1987, practicing in immigration court, U.S. district court, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He also served as a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1987 to 2014, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Professor Bettwy has written several published articles on comparative law, international law, immigration law, terrorism and film."

This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays collected in this volume are the result of cooperation between the Justice Partnership Programme in Hanoi and the Supreme Peoples Procuracy of Vietnam. The programme is co-funded by the European Union, Denmark and Sweden. Knowledge of the criminal procedures of other countries has been of particular importance to the drafters of the Criminal Procedure Code of Vietnam as they approximate the law to international standards. The essays contain detailed and systematic analyses of the criminal procedures in Italy, China, Russia and the United States of America. The common structure of the analyses and the meta-analyses of the editor of the book make a comparative study out of it. The study on the criminal procedure in China is one of the few on this subject ever published in English.

Book Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film Theory

Download or read book Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film Theory written by Elsie Walker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film Theory breaks new ground by redirecting the arguments of foundational texts within film theory to film sound tracks. Walker includes sustained analyses of particular films according to a range of theoretical approaches: psychoanalysis, feminism, genre studies, post-colonialism, and queer theory. The films come from disparate temporal and industrial contexts: from Classical Hollywood Gothic melodrama (Rebecca) to contemporary, critically-acclaimed science fiction (Gravity). Along with sound tracks from canonical American films including The Searchers and To Have and Have Not, Walker analyzes independent Australasian films: examples include Heavenly Creatures, a New Zealand film that uses music to empower its queer female protagonists; and Ten Canoes, the first Australian feature film with a script entirely in Aboriginal languages. Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film Theory thus not only calls new attention to the significance of sound tracks, but also focuses on the sonic power of characters representing those whose voices have all too often been drowned out. Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film Theory is both rigorous and accessible to all students and scholars with a grasp of cinematic and musical structures. Moreover, the book brings together film studies, musicology, history, politics, and culture and therefore resonates across the liberal arts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminal Procedures: Cases, Statutes, and Executive Materials, by Marc Miller, Ronald Wright, Jenia Turner, and Kay Levine, focuses on the interactions among multiple institutions in shaping the law of Criminal Procedure, bringing state courts, legislatures, prosecutor offices, and police department policymakers into the picture alongside the U.S. Supreme Court. Criminal Procedures: Cases, Statutes, and Executive Materials is noted for its comprehensive coverage and excellent selection and editing of cases and materials. The book is known for its special focus on a rich selection of materials from multiple institutions, including primary materials from U.S. Supreme Court cases, state high court cases, state and federal statutes, rules of procedure, and police and prosecutorial policies, along with materials from social science studies. The new edition retains the casebook’s engaging writing style and division of materials into “teachable chunks.” Updated cases are chosen for their contemporary accuracy and feel, to complement essential cases of historical value. Taken together, the principal materials highlight procedural variety, focus on real process topics, provide the political context, and consider the impact of procedures on the various parties involved. The scholarly expertise and experience of the authors are especially reflected in the Criminal Procedure II materials, which include coverage of prosecutorial charging, plea bargaining, and sentencing. Their frequent use of Problems gives instructors options for applying concepts and doctrines in realistic practice settings. The purchase of this ebook edition does not entitle you to receive access to the Connected eBook with Study Center on CasebookConnect. You will need to purchase a new print book to get access to the full experience, including: lifetime access to the online ebook with highlight, annotation, and search capabilities; practice questions from your favorite study aids; an outline tool and other helpful resources. New to the 7th Edition: New organization for the search and seizure chapters to better reflect long-term doctrinal changes. Coverage of new design options for police organizations, inspired by the “Defund the Police” movement. Spotlighting the Breonna Taylor tragedy in Louisville as a focal point for discussion of no-knock warrants. Emphasis throughout the search and seizure chapters on the interaction between technology and doctrinal change. Coverage of declination and plea negotiation policies in the offices of “progressive prosecutors.” Enhanced coverage of the operation of state speedy trial statutes in high-volume courts Fresh evaluation of historical trends and current practices in plea bargaining. Coverage of recent rulings of U.S. Supreme Court on jury selection and unanimous jury verdicts. Professors and students will benefit from: Materials that support class discussion, including criminal court actors beyond the Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court: the vision is “street level federalism.” Materials that portray for students the range of current practices in criminal justice rather than a rushed historical narrative about doctrinal trends. Supporting web site that offers exemplar documents from legal practice, recent news with relevance for criminal procedure, and brief video lectures to introduce each major unit. Emphasis on high-volume practical issues in criminal procedure instead of intricate but rarely-encountered questions. Intuitive organization – tracking the typical sequence of events in criminal investigations and in the criminal courts – makes it easy to see connections among different areas of the law.

Download or read book Routledge International Handbook of Visual Criminology written by Michelle Brown and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamically written and richly illustrated, the Routledge International Handbook of Visual Criminology offers the first foundational primer on visual criminology. Spanning a variety of media and visual modes, this volume assembles established researchers whose work is essential to understanding the role of the visual in criminology and emergent thinkers whose work is taking visual criminology in new directions. This book is divided into five parts that each highlight a key aspect of visual criminology, exploring the diversity of methods, techniques and theoretical approaches currently shaping the field: • Part I introduces formative positions in the developments of visual criminology and explores the different disciplines that have contributed to analysing images. • Part II explores visual representations of crime across film, graphic art, documentary, police photography, press coverage and graffiti and urban aesthetics. • Part III discusses the relationship of visual criminology to criminal justice institutions like policing, punishment and law. • Part IV focuses on the distinctive ethical problems posed by the image, reflecting on the historical development, theoretical disputes and methodological issues involved. • Part V identifies new frameworks and emergent perspectives and reflects upon the distinctive challenges and limits that can be seen in this emerging field. This book includes a vibrant colour plate section and over a hundred black and white images, breaking down the barriers between original photography and artwork, historic paintings and illustrations and modern comics and films.
