Book Comparative Wood Anatomy

Download or read book Comparative Wood Anatomy written by Sherwin John Carlquist and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnostically illustrated with light and scanning electron micrographs, Comparative Wood Anatomy lucidly introduces dicotyledon wood in terms of cell types and their variations, pertinent literature, taxonomic distribution of features, terminology, and methods for preparation. Two final chapters present syntheses: taxonomic achievements of wood studies; and the evolutionary relationship between structure, physiological function, and ecology. This detailed survey serves a wide range of interests: identification, systematics, evolution and physiology.

Book Comparative Wood Anatomy of Some Shrubs Native to the Northern Rocky Mountains Classic Reprint

Download or read book Comparative Wood Anatomy of Some Shrubs Native to the Northern Rocky Mountains Classic Reprint written by Arlene Dale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Wood Anatomy of Some Shrubs Native to the Northern Rocky Mountains Presented here is a key for identification of shrubby plants native to the Northern Rocky Mountain area. This key supplements those already in existence that are based on plant organs such as flowers, leaves, fruits, and other macroscopic characters. In contrast, the characters upon which this key is based are those of the wood, or technically, the xylem. Such a key would be valuable to substantiate identifications made by means of the ordinary keys and to aid in the identifications of plants when flowers, leaves, and fruits are not available. Fifty-five Species, representing 35 genera (see page have been incorporated in this key. Xylem characters determined the arrangement of the species. Where certain characters were held in common by all genera of a family, these species parallel their usual taxonomic arrangement. Depending on characters present, identification is to a species, a genus, or a group of genera. Further study will make possible more detailed identification. A review of the literature concerning wood anatomy indicates a change in emphasis has occurred Within the past 20 years-from a heavy reliance on quantitative data in distinguishing among woods to the use of qualitative characters. This change has been caused by increased understanding of the extent and causes of variations within a Species No longer is it assumed that a Single specimen accurately represents a species. To determine the range of variability of all 55 Species was beyond the scope of this study; the diversity of characters within each species will be discovered only as this key is used. In this key, cell patterns - created by the ordered activity of the cambium-are employed extensively. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Plant Stems

Download or read book Plant Stems written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-07-19 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stems, of various sizes and shapes, are involved in most of the organic processes and interactions of plants, ranging from support, transport, and storage to development and protection. The stem itself is a crucially important intermediary: it links above- and below ground organs-connecting roots to leaves. An international team of leading researchers vividly illustrate that stems are more than pipes, more than simple connecting and supporting structures; rather stems are critical, anatomically distinct structures of enormous variability. It is, to an unappreciated extent, this variability that underpins both the diversity and the success of plants in myriad ecosystems. Plant Stems will be a valuable resource on form/function relationships for researchers and graduate-level students in ecology, evolutionary biology, physiology, development, genetics, agricultural sciences, and horticulture as they unravel the mechanisms and processes that allow organisms and ecosystems to function. Syntheses of structural, physiological, and ecological functions of stems Multiple viewpoints on how stem structure relates to performance Highlights of major areas of plant biology long neglected

Book excerpt: This book challenges the assumption that morphological data are inherently unsuitable for phylogeny reconstruction, argues that both molecular and morphological phylogenies should play a major role in systematics, and provides the most comprehensive review of the comparative anatomy, homologies and evolution of the head, neck, pectoral and upper li

Book New Perspectives in Wood Anatomy

Download or read book New Perspectives in Wood Anatomy written by P. Baas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the International Association of Wood Anatomists several symposia were held during the 13th International Botanical Congress in Sydney, August 1981. Extended versions of most of the invited papers presented there, and some additional papers on aspects which could not be included in the congress program constitute the contents of this book, which intentionally received the pretentious title 'New Perspectives in Wood Anatomy'. To some readers it may seem a paradox that under this heading papers on a diversity of partly traditional wood anatomical subjects are assembled, even including two with a historical emphasis. However, a study of the history of wood anatomy and of how students of that discipline joined forces in an inter national association, brings to light many facts and views which deserve the attention of present day and future wood scientists as a potential source of in spiration for their research and organisational work.
