Book Comparative Study of Design Methods for Two Way Reinforced Concrete Slab Systems

Download or read book Comparative Study of Design Methods for Two Way Reinforced Concrete Slab Systems written by Robert J. Gibbs and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first reinforced concrete slab was built by C.A.P. Turner in 1906. This first slab design, which was used for a Minneapolis project, had to be load tested to satisfy the building code because no one had experience in the design of concrete slabs. The problem for the designer is to decide which method is most appropriate for a given slab. He must determine whether the chosen method satisfies strength and serviceability requirements and whether the solution is economical from both a design and construction point of view. The purpose of this report is to examine different methods of two-way slab design and compare the results to assess the relative merits of design methods.

Book Plastic Voided Slab Systems

Download or read book Plastic Voided Slab Systems written by Corey J. Midkiff and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete slabs are one of the most common components in modern building construction. Reinforced concrete slabs with plastic voids slabs are a new and innovative type of structural, concrete slab system developed to allow for lighter self-weight of the structure while maintaining similar load carrying capacity of a solid slab. Plastic voided slabs are capable of reducing the amount of concrete necessary to construct a building by 30 percent or more. This reduction can be beneficial in terms of financial savings as well as building performance. This report examines a two-way, reinforced concrete slab with plastic voids construction in comparison to traditional flat plate reinforced concrete slab construction. The design process for plastic voided slabs is directly compared with traditional two-way flat plate reinforced concrete slabs through a design comparison of typical bays of 20' by 20' (6m by 6m), 25' by 25' (7.6m by 7.6m), 30' by 30' (9m by 9m) and 35' by 35' (10.7m by 10.7m). The traditional slab design process follows the ACI 318-11 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete chapter 13 Direct Design Method, while the plastic voided slab design process is modified from the BubbleDeck Design Guide for compliance with BCA using AS3600 and EC2. Sizes of traditional slab bays are compared to sizes of plastic voided slab bays. Results of the comparison study are presented.

Book Reinforced Concrete

Download or read book Reinforced Concrete written by James K. Wight and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete design encompasses both the art and science of engineering. This book presents the theory of reinforced concrete as a direct application of the laws of statics and mechanics of materials. In addition, it emphasizes that a successful design not only satisfies design rules, but also is capable of being built in a timely fashion and for a reasonable cost. A multi-tiered approach makes Reinforced Concrete: Mechanics and Design an outstanding textbook for a variety of university courses on reinforced concrete design. Topics are normally introduced at a fundamental level, and then move to higher levels where prior educational experience and the development of engineering judgment will be required.

Book Comparative Design of Structures

Download or read book Comparative Design of Structures written by Shaopei Lin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents comparative design as an approach to the conceptual design of structures. Primarily focusing on reasonable structural performance, sustainable development and architectural aesthetics, it features detailed studies of structural performance through the composition and de-composition of these elements for a variety of structures, such as high-rise buildings, long-span crossings and spatial structures. The latter part of the book addresses the theoretical basis and practical implementation of knowledge engineering in structural design, and a case-based fuzzy reasoning method is introduced to illustrate the concept and method of intelligent design. The book is intended for civil engineers, structural designers and architects, as well as senior undergraduate and graduate students in civil engineering and architecture. Lin Shaopei and Huang Zhen are both Professors at the Department of Civil Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

Book Optimizing Slab Design to Reduce Weight and Construction Cost of a RC Building

Download or read book Optimizing Slab Design to Reduce Weight and Construction Cost of a RC Building written by Shehriyar Bukhari (Graduate student) and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The ultimate goal of any structural designer is not only to design safe structures that meet the requirements of the governing design Codes, but also to make sure that the design is cost effective and easy to construct. For medium- and high-rise structures, to achieve this goal, engineers mostly use steel and reinforced concrete as construction materials. For medium-rise structures, reinforced concrete two-way flat slabs offer a number of advantages over other systems, including their shallow depth, which can reduce the overall height of the structure or increase the effective story height. Due to fast constructability and shaping freedom, flat slabs are commonly used for parking structures, medium-rise buildings, large industrial structures, and warehouses. Thickness optimization of flat slabs lead to reduced sizes of beams, columns, and foundation system, and lower lateral demand on seismic lateral load resisting system. Moreover, thickness optimization generates savings in material and labor costs. This research explores an alternate design method (referred to as the Rational Design Method (RDM) in ASCE 7-16) that can be used to optimize two-way flat slabs, applied to re-design of an existing five-story concrete parking garage. This study presents an iterative design process, where the computer program Etabs-2016 was used for 3D modeling and analysis. The optimized design is compared with the original design of the existing City Hall Automated Garage building located in West Hollywood, California, designed using commonly used methods. The comparison between the original and re-designed building clearly demonstrates the advantages of the optimized design, as the total self-weight of the building was reduced by 30%.
