Book Comparative Study of Coherent Vortex Structures in a Boundary Layer with Adverse Pressure Gradient by Means of a New Experimental Method

Download or read book Comparative Study of Coherent Vortex Structures in a Boundary Layer with Adverse Pressure Gradient by Means of a New Experimental Method written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several kinds of coherent structures found in previous investigations in a transitional Blasius boundary layer. Spikes, A-vortices, 3D high-shear layers, and ring-like vortices are among them. These structures were observed in experimental and numerical (DNS) investigations. Very similar flow pattens were also found in other transitional near-wall shear flows, such as the plane channel flow and the pipe flow, and also in the developed wall turbulence. Based on these observations, it was suggested that these structures are very universal and represent an inherent feature of the process of turbulence production in all near-wall flows in both transitional and turbulent regimes. Moreover, the mechanism of formation and interaction of these structures can be regarded as a universal mechanism of turbulence production. The main goal of the present study is to check this idea for the case of the APG boundary-layer transition, whose late stages have never been studied experimental despite the great practical importance of this case. The only currently available study was performed numerically for a rather large APG (which is difficult to examine in the wind tunnel).

Book Theoretical Experimental Investigation of Coherent Structure in the Turbulent Boundary Layer

Download or read book Theoretical Experimental Investigation of Coherent Structure in the Turbulent Boundary Layer written by D. E. Abbott and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project combines both experimental video flow visualization studies and theoretical investigations of a series of phenomenological and theoretical models based upon the three-dimensional details of convected, coherent structural elements of a turbulent flow as it interacts with a solid surface. The progress over the past year has led to the experimental consideration of range of sub-problems including high Reynolds Number (4,000,000) turbulent flows, the effect of surface modification on low-speed streak formation, and the effect of vortex loop interaction with a solid boundary. To augment the visualization pictures, a computerized video-digitizing system has been developed. Preliminary results show tremendous promise for obtaining quantitative data from flow visualization pictures. The specific thrust of the theoretical studies has been focussed on three areas: (1) how two- and three-dimensional vortex structures interact with wall boundary layers, (2) the development of a new type of prediction method for two-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer flows, and (3) improvement in numerical techniques for solving parabolic, boundary-layer equations. Book Liutex and Its Applications in Turbulence Research

Download or read book Liutex and Its Applications in Turbulence Research written by Chaoqun Liu and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liutex and Its Applications in Turbulence Research reviews the history of vortex definition, provides an accurate mathematical definition of vortices, and explains their applications in flow transition, turbulent flow, flow control, and turbulent flow experiments. The book explains the term "Rortex" as a mathematically defined rigid rotation of fluids or vortex, which could help solve many longstanding problems in turbulence research. The accurate mathematical definition of the vortex is important in a range of industrial contexts, including aerospace, turbine machinery, combustion, and electronic cooling systems, so there are many areas of research that can benefit from the innovations described here. This book provides a thorough survey of the latest research in generalized and flow-thermal, unified, law-of-the-wall for wall-bounded turbulence. Important theory and methodologies used for developing these laws are described in detail, including: the classification of the conventional turbulent boundary layer concept based on proper velocity scaling; the methodology for identification of the scales of velocity, temperature, and length needed to establish the law; and the discovery, proof, and strict validations of the laws, with both Reynolds and Prandtl number independency properties using DNS data. The establishment of these statistical laws is important to modern fluid mechanics and heat transfer research, and greatly expands our understanding of wall-bounded turbulence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Turbulence Conferences have been organized under the auspices of the European Mechanics Committee (Euromech) to provide a forum for discussion and exchange of recent and new results in the field of turbulence. The first conference was organized in Lyon in 1986 with 152 participants. The second and third conferences were held in Berlin (1988) and Stockholm (1990) with 165 and 172 participants respectively. The fourth was organized in Delft from 30 June to 3 July 1992 by the J.M. Burgers Centre. There were 214 participants from 22 countries. This steadily growing number of participants demonstrates both the success and need for this type of conference. The main topics of the Fourth European Turbulence Conference were: Dynamical Systems and Transition; Statistical Physics and Turbulence; Experiments and Novel Experimental Techniques; Particles and Bubbles in Turbulence; Simulation Methods; Coherent Structures; Turbulence Modelling and Compressibility Effects. In addition a special session was held on the subject of CeBular Automata. Each of the sessions was introduced with a survey lecture. The lecturers were: W. Eckhaus, AJ. Libchaber, L. Katgerman, F. Durst, M. Lesieur, B. Legras, D.G. Dritschel and P. Bradshaw. The contributions of the participants were subdivided into oral and poster presentations. In addition to the normal program, some Speciai Interest Groups of Ercoftac (European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion) presented their research activities in the form of a poster.

Book Longitudinal Vortices in Turbulent Boundary Layers Subjected to Wall Curvature and Strong Adverse Pressure Gradients Numerical Investigations Using LES and DNS

Download or read book Longitudinal Vortices in Turbulent Boundary Layers Subjected to Wall Curvature and Strong Adverse Pressure Gradients Numerical Investigations Using LES and DNS written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinal vortices in turbulent boundary layers that are subjected to strong wall curvature (both convex and concave) and strong adverse pressure gradients were investigated numerically. The motivation for this research was to uncover the fundamental mechanisms responsible for the generation of longitudinal vortices and their dynamical interaction with the other dominant coherent structures that arise from the presence of wall curvature and strong adverse pressure gradients. This understanding is essential for future implementation of separation control techniques for practical flows when longitudinal vortices are inherently present, or when forced longitudinal vortices are employed for separation control (i.e., on demand vortex generators). Furthermore, such investigations can shed light on the turbulence generation mechanisms for boundary layers subjected to streamwise curvature and pressure gradients when longitudinal vortices are present. The investigations were carried out using DNS, LES and unsteady RANS. Towards this end, we have employed our new Flow Simulation Methodology (FSM) for calculating turbulent flows. The present numerical investigations were a critical test for FSM and the turbulence model used in FSM as the investigated flows are highly complex with the turbulence in strong non-equilibrium.
