Download or read book China Debates the Future Security Environment written by Michael Pillsbury and published by National Defense University (NDU). This book was released on 2000 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers over 600 selected quotations from the writings of over 200 Chinese authors published from 1994 to 1999. Analysis and interpretation are kept to a minimum so that the Chinese may speak for themselves. Many Chinese scholars assisted with this study by providing hard-to-get books and articles unfamiliar to most Westerners. Half the authors were interviewed in China. They explained some of the viewpoints in recent debates about the future security environment. Debates in China are generally concealed, and frequently authors pretend they do not exist. However muted they may be, China's debates about the future nevertheless exist and merit attention if we are to understand the premises of China's national strategy and set a baseline from which to measure any future change in these premises.

Download or read book Information Highlighting in Advanced Learner English written by Marcus Callies and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first detailed and comprehensive study of information highlighting in advanced learner language, echoing the increasing interest in questions of near-native competence in SLA research and contributing to the description of advanced interlanguages. It examines the production and comprehension of specific means of information highlighting in English by native speakers and German learners of English as a foreign language, presenting triangulated experimental and learner corpus data as corroborating evidence. The study focuses on learners' use of discourse-pragmatically motivated variations of the basic word order such as inversion, preposing, and it- and wh-clefts, an underexplored field in SLA research to date. The book also provides a critical re-assessment of the study of pragmatics within SLA. It has largely been neglected to date that L2 pragmatic knowledge includes more than the sociopragmatic and pragmalinguistic abilities for understanding and performing speech acts. Thus, the book argues for an extension of the scope of inquiry in interlanguage pragmatics beyond the cross-cultural investigation of speech acts. It also discusses pedagogical implications for foreign language teaching and will be of interest to applied linguists and SLA researchers, language teachers and curriculum designers.

Download or read book Summa Theologica Part II Secunda Secundae Annotated Edition written by St. Thomas Aquinas and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 2661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive biographical annotation about the author and his life The Summa Theologiæ (Latin: Compendium of Theology or Theological Compendium; also subsequently called the Summa Theologica or simply the Summa, written 1265–1274) is the best-known work of Thomas Aquinas (c.1225–1274), and although unfinished, "one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature." It is intended as a manual for beginners in theology and a compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. The Summa's topics follow a cycle: the existence of God; Creation, Man; Man's purpose; Christ; the Sacraments; and back to God. (courtesy of wikipedia.com). This is part 2-2, 'Secunda Secundae'. In a chain of acts of will, man strives for the highest end. They are free acts, insofar as man has in himself the knowledge of their end (and therein the principle of action). In that the will wills the end, it wills also the appropriate means, chooses freely and completes the consensus. Whether the act be good or evil depends on the end. The "human reason" pronounces judgment concerning the character of the end; it is, therefore, the law for action. Human acts, however, are meritorious insofar as they promote the purpose of God and his honor. By repeating a good action, man acquires a moral habit or a quality which enables him to do the good gladly and easily. This is true, however, only of the intellectual and moral virtues (which Aquinas treats after the manner of Aristotle); the theological virtues are imparted by God to man as a "disposition", from which the acts here proceed; while they strengthen, they do not form it. The "disposition" of evil is the opposite alternative. An act becomes evil through deviation from the reason, and from divine moral law. Therefore, sin involves two factors: its substance (or matter) is lust; in form, however, it is deviation from the divine law. Contents: • Treatise on the theological virtues (qq. 1 to 46) • Treatise on the cardinal virtues (qq. 47 to 170) • Treatise on prudence (qq. 47 to 56) • Treatise on justice (qq. 57 to 122) • Treatise on fortitude and temperance (qq. 123 to 170) • Treatise on gratuitous graces (qq. 171 to 182) • Treatise on the states of life (qq. 183 to 189)
Download or read book Making the Grade written by Martin V. Covington and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-04-24 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achievement behaviour in schools can best be understood in terms of attempts by students to maintain a positive self-image. For many students, trying hard is frightening because a combination of effort and failure implies low ability, which is often equated with worthlessness. Thus many students described as unmotivated are in actuality highly motivated - not to learn, but to avoid failure. Students have a variety of techniques for avoiding failure, ranging from cheating to setting low goals which are easily achieved. In Making the Grade, Martin Covington extracts powerful educational implications from self-worth theory and other contemporary views of motivation that will be useful for everyone concerned with the educational dilemmas we face. He provides a comprehensive, insightful review of research and theory, both contemporary and historical, on the topic of achievement motivation, and arranges this knowledge in ways that lead to imminently practical recommendations for restructuring schools.

Download or read book Handbook of Isotopologue Biogeochemistry written by Naohiro Yoshida and published by Springer. This book was released on 2020-04-26 with total page 1200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook looks into the latest scientific achievements in the observation, technical development, theory, and application of isotopologues. Isotopes have been used to trace material cycles in the solar system, planets, atmosphere, oceans, terrestrial environment, biosphere, and also the interior of living organisms. Isotopic research has developed from the determination of the bulk content of a single isotope ratio to multi-isotope, mass independent fractionation (MIF) of oxygen and sulfur isotopes, doubly isotope-substituted species, and site-specific isotopic signatures at natural isotopic abundance levels using several novel analytical techniques. The study of isotopologues has an increasing number of applications in many scientific fields ranging from earth and planetary sciences, environmental studies including climate change to life sciences relevant to many areas of interest for human activities such as agriculture, food authentication, pharmacology, and health care diagnosis. This handbook is structured so that is appropriate for both graduate students and professionals in diverse scientific and engineering communities devoted to related fields.
Download or read book Central Documents and Politburo Politics in China written by Kenneth Lieberthal and published by U OF M CENTER FOR CHINESE STUDIES. This book was released on 1978-01-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtually every analysis of Chinese politics views the Politburo as the nerve center of the system, but questions abound as to how this center governs itself and how it interacts with the system around it. Specifically, how much consultation occurs during the drafting of major Politburo documents, and who is brought into this process? How is information channeled up to this body, and what are the rules that govern the access of the Politburo members themselves to data generated by the bureaucracies? How are the political strategies of individual leaders and political factions attuned to this system of information channeling? What types of decisions are reached by the Politburo? To whom are they communicated? How rigidly must they be followed? How institutionalized is this entire decision making system, and has it become more—or less—institutionalized over the years? How has the factional legacy of the Cultural Revolution affected its mode of operations? Indeed, in the wake of the Cultural Revolution, how much in control of the system has the Politburo itself been? Central Documents in Politburo Politics in China seeks to better understand these questions by analyzing a particular stream of largely bureaucratic communications in the Chinese system: the so-called “Central Documents” (CDs). This is a series of documents through which the top Party leadership directly communicates with the rest of the political system. [1]
