Book excerpt: As an academic or a small business owner, you will need to write grants at some point in your career. Writing them though is not enough, what you also need to know is how to win grants. Much has been written about writing grants, the mysterious special ability called ‘grantsmanship’, so it occurred to me that there is a need to come at this differently and spill the beans. The difficulty in getting a grant, in particular an NIH grant like an R01 in the USA is often described, it is competitive and gets tougher every year. Your proposal therefore must stand out, it must connect with the reviewers. This is true for all types of grants, give the reviewer what they want always. But also, you need to connect to the program officer, the committee that ultimately makes funding decisions and you must take care of a myriad of other details outside of the main event which is describing the “science”. This means you cannot rely on just out-writing the competition, it is more than that as you have to out-think, out-strategize and out-schmooze them. If you have been continually funded for decades that is terrific, but if you want to keep being funded there is no guarantee what got you there will keep you there. What was a hot technology 4-5 years ago is not the new thing anymore, you will need to do something different, but what? You therefore need to not only think about writing great grants, you need to put it into practice and win them. Having written and won grants from the NIH and DOD over the past 17 years (and longer by the time you read this) I possess a valuable perspective. Each grant and study section will be different. Whether a big or small grant it does not seem to make a difference the reviewers will critique your efforts, they may not like it, they may reject your ideas or they may love it. You have some small degree of control until the proposal leaves your hands or more correctly you click ‘submit’. You will need to differentiate your grant from the hundreds of others in many ways, but you cannot change who you are, your history so how you describe yourself and team will also have an impact. You could spend hundreds of hours on your proposal or just a day and the outcome might still be the same. This small book is a summary of my own personal experiences and will provide some advice that will help you learn how to do a better job of winning grants. This book is written by a scientist who writes the grants and develops commercial products; Provides a unique perspective on what you need to write better grants; Teaches you how to continually win grants; This book provides examples from the authors own grant applications; The reader will be inspired to start a company to win small business grants.

Book Discovering Life Manufacturing Life

Download or read book Discovering Life Manufacturing Life written by Pierre V. Vignais and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-21 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis BACON, in his Novum Organum, Robert BOYLE, in his Skeptical Chemist and René DESCARTES, in his Discourse on Method; all of these men were witnesses to the th scientific revolution, which, in the 17 century, began to awaken the western world from a long sleep. In each of these works, the author emphasizes the role of the experimental method in exploring the laws of Nature, that is to say, the way in which an experiment is designed, implemented according to tried and tested te- niques, and used as a basis for drawing conclusions that are based only on results, with their margins of error, taking into account contemporary traditions and prejudices. Two centuries later, Claude BERNARD, in his Introduction to the Study of Experimental Medicine, made a passionate plea for the application of the experimental method when studying the functions of living beings. Twenty-first century Biology, which has been fertilized by highly sophisticated techniques inherited from Physics and Chemistry, blessed with a constantly increasing expertise in the manipulation of the genome, initiated into the mysteries of information techn- ogy, and enriched with the ever-growing fund of basic knowledge, at times appears to have forgotten its roots.

Book The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology

Download or read book The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology written by Dorothy L. Rosenthal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a novel and proven approach to cytologically classify urinary samples for the detection of bladder cancer and lesions of the upper urinary tract. The new method is based on the collective experience of knowledgeable cytopathologists who have tested the terminology within their own laboratories for reproducibility and predictability of neoplasms of the urinary tract. Accompanying the written criteria for each diagnostic category are meticulously photographed exemplars of the cellular features, with cogently annotated descriptions of the photographs. The book thereby performs as an atlas for microscopists involved in diagnostic cytopathology at all levels of their education. Included in the targeted readership are experienced pathologists, cytotechnologists, and students of both professional groups. The new terminology also considers the clinical aspects of patient management. Written by experts in the field who convened at the 18th International Congress of Cytology in Paris, The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology presents a global standard for reporting and a new philosophic approach that maximizes the strengths of detecting the potentially lethal high grade lesions by urinary cytology, and recognizes without apology the inability to reliably detect the low grade lesions in urinary cytology. The Concept has been endorsed by the American Society Of Cytopathology, and the International Academy of Cytology.

This has resulted in the visualization of these large macromolecular assemblages at atomic level, thus providing the platform for functional interpretation and therapeutic design. Structural Virology covers a wide range of topics and is split into three sections. The first discusses the vast biophysical methodologies used in structural virology, including sample production and purification, confocal microscopy, mass spectrometry, negative-stain and cryo-electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The second discusses the role of virus capsid protein structures in determining the functional roles required for receptor recognition, cellular entry, capsid assembly, genome packaging and mechanisms of host immune system evasion. The last section discusses therapeutic strategies based on virus protein structures, including the design of antiviral drugs and the development of viral capsids as vehicles for foreign gene delivery. Each topic covered will begin with a review of the current literature followed by a more detailed discussion of experimental procedures, a step in the viral life cycle, or strategies for therapeutic development. With contributions from experts in the field of structural biology and virology this exceptional monograph will appeal to biomedical scientists involved in basic and /or applied research on viruses. It also provides up-to-date reference material for students entering the field of structural virology as well as scientists already familiar with the area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spinal disorders in very young children may be caused by a variety of conditions. The treatment of such conditions is often challenging due to the age of the patient and the progressive nature of the deformity. There also may be associated problems such as congenital anomalies, respiratory insufficiency, and neurological problems. Depending on the etiology of the deformity, these children are often cared for by multiple specialists including pediatricians, pediatric orthopaedists or orthopaedic spine surgeons, neurologists, pediatric surgeons, pediatric neurosurgeons, oncologists, and/or pulmonologists. Health professionals in all of the mentioned disciplines are involved in the management of these patients, which is why compiling a comprehensive textbook that is not limited to orthopedic specialists is essential. This textbook will effectively help to standardize the care of these patients. Furthermore, other professionals such as nurses, physical therapists and healthcare professionals in training are usually not familiar with these conditions and are in need of a reference book to consult when caring for children with spinal deformities.
