Book Robert Louis Stevenson

Download or read book Robert Louis Stevenson written by Richard Ashley Rice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Louis Stevenson: How to Know Him Tevenson is one of the companionable eu thors. He has been able, in an unusual degree, to give himself out to his readers, to share with them his purposes, his tastes, his experience of life. For it is in the mutual appreciation of these things that congeniality between people usually begins, and it is in the stimulus, the suggestion, the criticism to be derived from them that companionship is al ways fostered. The best friends are they who share fully and imaginatively each other's purposes, tastes, and past experience. And if this is the gist Of a man's relation to his fellows, it may also be the secret of his intimacy with his companionable books. In the case of Stevenson and his readers this seems to be especially full of meaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He passed as a good man, but this was rather a negative reputation, for he had never been put to any severe test. He passed as a useful man, but this was because the standard of useful ness had never been critically examined. He passed for a companionable man, but this was among persons who were socially not exacting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is reached by a zigzag bridle-path, cut in the mountain-side, which leads up from the Franconia Notch road. The cabin and lake are a thousand feet above the road. Both road and bridle-path go through the primeval forest. No axe of lumberman has, hitherto, desecrated this forest sanctuary. The expression "primeval forest" is little understood by many who use it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miss. Livingston's Companion: A Love Story of Old New York I could never have believed that the Sight of my father could give me so little pleasure. I tried to think, while I was shaking hands with him, in an embarrassed and half-hearted way, I fear, what excuse I could make for running off from him immedi ately; for the thought of disappointing Peggy who, I had no doubt, was ardently and impatiently expecting my arrival in Stratford, did not occur to me for a moment. But I soon made up my mind that the only honest way was, as the American philosopher says, also the best policy: I must make a clean breast of it to my father, for he was much too shrewd a man to be deceived by any halting excuses, even if I had been willing to make the attempt. On the whole it would be rather a relief to have it over, for the confession was bound to come some time, and the sooner it was made the sooner I could hope to claim Peggy - my father's consent being a necessary preliminary. Therefore, while mentally anathematizing old Hardwick, to whom I was sure I was indebted for this visit, I plunged boldly in. I am very glad to see you, sir, I said, inwardly quavering but outwardly bold, though I could have wished I might have known of your coming in time to put off an important engage ment in Stratford which compels my leaving on the noon coach. An engagement in Stratford exclaimed my father, in real or pretended astonishment. Pray, what business takes you to Stratford, my boy? I have promised, Sir, to spend Sunday there with Miss Wol verton, I answered steadily enough, though feeling the red flood rushing to my temples. Book An American Biographical and Historical Dictionary Classic Reprint

Download or read book An American Biographical and Historical Dictionary Classic Reprint written by William Allen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American Biographical and Historical Dictionary The following work presents itself to the public with no claims to attention, but such as are founded upon the interest, which may be felt in the lives of Americans. Finding himself a few years ago in a literary retirement, with no important duties, which pressed immediately upon him, the author conceived the plan of this dictionary. He was desirous of bringing to the citizens of the United States more information, than was generally possessed, respecting the illustrious men of former times, the benefactors and ornaments of this country, who have passed away. He persuaded himself, that if he could collect the fragments of biography, which were buried in the mass of American history, or scattered amidst a multitude of tracts of various kinds, and could fashion these materials into a regular form, so as to place before the eye our great and good men, if not in their full dimensions, yet in their true shape, he should render an acceptable service to his countrymen. This work with no little labor he has now completed; and the inexperienced artist, in his first essay, can hope only, that his design will be commended. He wishes chiefly, that as the images of departed excellence are surveyed, the spirit, which animated them, may be caught by the beholder. As an apology however for the deficiences and errors of various kinds, which may be found in the work, a full exposition of his plan, and some representation of the difficulty of executing it seem to be necessary.
