Book Continuous wave Optical Parametric Oscillators and Frequency Conversion Sources from the Ultraviolet to the Mid infrared

Download or read book Continuous wave Optical Parametric Oscillators and Frequency Conversion Sources from the Ultraviolet to the Mid infrared written by Kavita Devi and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-power, continuous-wave (cw) optical parametric oscillators (OPOs), from the ultraviolet (UV) and visible to the near- and mid-infrared (IR) wavelength range, are of interest for a variety of applications such as spectroscopy, trace-gas detection and remote sensing. As such, it is desired to investigate OPOs and different frequency conversion techniques, to cover the spectral regions that are inaccessible to lasers, and that too in a compact and low-cost design. This thesis presents the development of high-power cw OPOs, and frequency conversion sources, spanning the UV to mid-IR spectral range, employing different designs, experimental configurations and nonlinear crystals, making them compact and cost-effective. Commercial high-power cw lasers at 1940 nm, 1064 nm and 532 nm have been exploited as the pump sources, in the work presented in this thesis. We have demonstrated a fiber-based cw source at 970 nm, in a simple and practical design. Using direct single-pass second-harmonic-generation (SHG), 13.1 W of output power at 970 nm has been generated in a high-beam-quality, narrow-linewidth, linearly-polarized beam. Further, a technique based on the use of an antiresonant ring (ARR) interferometer for the attainment of optimum output coupling in a cw singly-resonant OPO has been investigated. The technique was deployed in a Yb-fiber-laser-pumped cw OPO based on MgO:PPLN. To extend the tunability of the 1-μm-pumped OPO from the mid-IR to near-IR, SHG of the intracavity signal has been performed in fanout-grating MgO:sPPLT. This compact cw source, tunable across 775¿807 nm, provides >3 W of near-infrared power across 56% of SHG tuning range, in high spatial beam quality. We have also generated output in the UV, down to 355 nm, using single-pass configuration based on sum-frequency-generation of fundamental at 1064 nm and the generated SHG at 532 nm, in BiB3O6. Further, we demonstrated an architecture comprising two cw OPOs coupled together with an ARR interferometer, generating two pairs of signal and idler wavelengths, that can be independently and arbitrarily tuned to indefinitely close spacing, through degeneracy, and beyond, across the wavelength range of 870-1370 nm. The OPOs, based on identical MgO:sPPLT crystals, were pumped by a single cw laser at 532 nm. On the other hand, we also demonstrated active mode-locking of cw OPOs using direct low-frequency electrooptic phase-modulation (EOM), opening up the possibility of avoiding the need for ultrafast laser sources and synchronous pumping. We have generated picosecond pulses in doubly- and singly-resonant configuration. Also, a technique based on the deployment of the EOM in combination with an ARR interferometer internal to the cw OPO has been investigated for active modelocking.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary goal of this contract is research studies of tunable optical sources, and the development of coherent sources in new spectral regions. In particular, a major project this year has been IR image up-conversion based on three frequency summing in metal vapors. A general theory of the efficiency of these up-converters as a function of the pump laser spectrum, detuning, and linewidth, and of the linewidth of the selected non-allowed atomic transition has been developed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) constitute an important coherent, narrow-linewidth and widely tunable light source with applications in spectroscopy and many other fields. Their realizations based on whispering gallery resonators (WGRs) provide a small footprint and ultra-low thresholds, with demonstrations of tunability typically done via temperature variation. In this work, we show the pump tuning capabilities of a mm-sized WGR mid-infrared OPO made of CdSiP2. By tuning a telecom wavelength diode laser by 16 nm, we generate tunable light from 2708 to 3575 nm. Furthermore, we show controlled tuning in steps of 1 free spectral range (FSR) and the possibility of 12 GHz of continuous tuning. All these features are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. We conclude that tuning from 2.4 to 4.9 μm is even possible, while still using commercially available near-infrared diode lasers. This work highlights the advantages of pump tuning of WGR OPOs and provides valuable insights for their precise control

Book High Average Power Parametric Frequency Conversion new Concepts and New Pump Sources

Download or read book High Average Power Parametric Frequency Conversion new Concepts and New Pump Sources written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of applications, including long range remote sensing and antisensor technology, require high average power tunable radiation in several distinct spectral regions. Of the many issues which determine the deployability of optical parametric oscillators (OPOS) and related systems, efficiency and simplicity are among the most important. It is only recently that the advent of compact diode laser pumped solid state lasers has produced pump sources for parametric oscillators which can make compact, efficient, high average power tunable sources possible. In this paper we outline several different issues in parametric oscillator and pump laser development which are currently under study at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: We present a continuous-wave singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator with 1.5% output coupling of the resonant signal wave, based on an angle-polished MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN), pumped by a commercial Nd:YVO4 laser at 1064 nm. The output-coupled optical parametric oscillator delivers a maximum total output power of 4.19 W with 42.8% extraction efficiency, across a tuning range of 1717 nm in the near- and mid-infrared region. This indicates improvements of 1.87 W in output power, 19.1% in extraction efficiency and 213 nm in tuning range extension in comparison with the optical parametric oscillator with no output coupling, while at the expense of increasing the oscillation threshold by a factor of ∼ 2. Moreover, it is confirmed that the finite output coupling also contributes to the reduction of the thermal effects in crystal.

Book A New Generation of Ultrafast Oscillators for Mid Infrared Applications

Download or read book A New Generation of Ultrafast Oscillators for Mid Infrared Applications written by Nathalie Nagl and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first successful realization of a compact, low-noise, and few-cycle light source in the mid-infrared wavelength region. By developing the technology of pumping femtosecond chromium-doped II-VI laser oscillators directly with the emission of broad-stripe single-emitter laser diodes, coherent light was generated with exceptionally low amplitude noise — crucial for numerous applications including spectroscopy at high sensitivities. Other key parameters of the oscillator's output, such as pulse duration and output power, matched and even surpassed previous state-of-the-art systems. As a demonstration of its unique capabilities, the oscillator's powerful output was used to drive — without further amplification — the nonlinear generation of coherent mid-infrared light spanning multiple octaves. The resulting table-top system uniquely combines high brilliance and ultrabroad spectral bandwidth in the important mid-infrared spectral range. The rapid development of this technology is comprehensively and lucidly documented in this PhD thesis. Together with a thorough review of literature and applications, and an extensive analysis of the theoretical foundations behind ultrafast laser oscillators, the thesis will serve as a valuable reference for the construction of a new generation of mid-infrared light sources.
