Book Algebraic Curves and Riemann Surfaces

Download or read book Algebraic Curves and Riemann Surfaces written by Rick Miranda and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Miranda takes the approach that algebraic curves are best encountered for the first time over the complex numbers, where the reader's classical intuition about surfaces, integration, and other concepts can be brought into play. Therefore, many examples of algebraic curves are presented in the first chapters. In this way, the book begins as a primer on Riemann surfaces, with complex charts and meromorphic functions taking centre stage. But the main examples come fromprojective curves, and slowly but surely the text moves toward the algebraic category. Proofs of the Riemann-Roch and Serre Dualtiy Theorems are presented in an algebraic manner, via an adaptation of the adelic proof, expressed completely in terms of solving a Mittag-Leffler problem. Sheaves andcohomology are introduced as a unifying device in the later chapters, so that their utility and naturalness are immediately obvious. Requiring a background of one term of complex variable theory and a year of abstract algebra, this is an excellent graduate textbook for a second-term course in complex variables or a year-long course in algebraic geometry.

Book Symmetries of Compact Riemann Surfaces

Download or read book Symmetries of Compact Riemann Surfaces written by Emilio Bujalance and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with symmetries of compact Riemann surfaces. A symmetry of a compact Riemann surface S is an antianalytic involution of S. It is well known that Riemann surfaces exhibiting symmetry correspond to algebraic curves which can be defined over the field of real numbers. In this monograph we consider three topics related to the topology of symmetries, namely the number of conjugacy classes of symmetries, the numbers of ovals of symmetries and the symmetry types of Riemann surfaces.

Download or read book Compact Riemann Surfaces written by Jürgen Jost and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is novel in its broad perspective on Riemann surfaces: the text systematically explores the connection with other fields of mathematics. The book can serve as an introduction to contemporary mathematics as a whole, as it develops background material from algebraic topology, differential geometry, the calculus of variations, elliptic PDE, and algebraic geometry. The book is unique among textbooks on Riemann surfaces in its inclusion of an introduction to Teichmüller theory. For this new edition, the author has expanded and rewritten several sections to include additional material and to improve the presentation.

Download or read book Complex Algebraic Curves written by Frances Clare Kirwan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-02-20 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This development of the theory of complex algebraic curves was one of the peaks of nineteenth century mathematics. They have many fascinating properties and arise in various areas of mathematics, from number theory to theoretical physics, and are the subject of much research. By using only the basic techniques acquired in most undergraduate courses in mathematics, Dr. Kirwan introduces the theory, observes the algebraic and topological properties of complex algebraic curves, and shows how they are related to complex analysis.

Book Riemann Surfaces and Algebraic Curves

Download or read book Riemann Surfaces and Algebraic Curves written by Renzo Cavalieri and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hurwitz theory, the study of analytic functions among Riemann surfaces, is a classical field and active research area in algebraic geometry. The subject's interplay between algebra, geometry, topology and analysis is a beautiful example of the interconnectedness of mathematics. This book introduces students to this increasingly important field, covering key topics such as manifolds, monodromy representations and the Hurwitz potential. Designed for undergraduate study, this classroom-tested text includes over 100 exercises to provide motivation for the reader. Also included are short essays by guest writers on how they use Hurwitz theory in their work, which ranges from string theory to non-Archimedean geometry. Whether used in a course or as a self-contained reference for graduate students, this book will provide an exciting glimpse at mathematics beyond the standard university classes.

Book excerpt: This monograph is a self-contained introduction to the geometry of Riemann Surfaces of constant curvature –1 and their length and eigenvalue spectra. It focuses on two subjects: the geometric theory of compact Riemann surfaces of genus greater than one, and the relationship of the Laplace operator with the geometry of such surfaces. Research workers and graduate students interested in compact Riemann surfaces will find here a number of useful tools and insights to apply to their investigations.

Book Introduction to Compact Riemann Surfaces and Dessins d Enfants

Download or read book Introduction to Compact Riemann Surfaces and Dessins d Enfants written by Ernesto Girondo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few books on the subject of Riemann surfaces cover the relatively modern theory of dessins d'enfants (children's drawings), which was launched by Grothendieck in the 1980s and is now an active field of research. In this 2011 book, the authors begin with an elementary account of the theory of compact Riemann surfaces viewed as algebraic curves and as quotients of the hyperbolic plane by the action of Fuchsian groups of finite type. They then use this knowledge to introduce the reader to the theory of dessins d'enfants and its connection with algebraic curves defined over number fields. A large number of worked examples are provided to aid understanding, so no experience beyond the undergraduate level is required. Readers without any previous knowledge of the field of dessins d'enfants are taken rapidly to the forefront of current research.

Book An Introduction to Riemann Surfaces Algebraic Curves and Moduli Spaces

Download or read book An Introduction to Riemann Surfaces Algebraic Curves and Moduli Spaces written by Martin Schlichenmaier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-09 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lecture is intended as an introduction to the mathematical concepts of algebraic and analytic geometry. It is addressed primarily to theoretical physicists, in particular those working in string theories. The author gives a very clear exposition of the main theorems, introducing the necessary concepts by lucid examples, and shows how to work with the methods of algebraic geometry. As an example he presents the Krichever-Novikov construction of algebras of Virasaro type. The book will be welcomed by many researchers as an overview of an important branch of mathematics, a collection of useful formulae and an excellent guide to the more extensive mathematical literature.

Book Topological Differential and Conformal Geometry of Surfaces

Download or read book Topological Differential and Conformal Geometry of Surfaces written by Norbert A'Campo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-27 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the main geometric structures that are carried by compact surfaces, with an emphasis on the classical theory of Riemann surfaces. It first covers the prerequisites, including the basics of differential forms, the Poincaré Lemma, the Morse Lemma, the classification of compact connected oriented surfaces, Stokes’ Theorem, fixed point theorems and rigidity theorems. There is also a novel presentation of planar hyperbolic geometry. Moving on to more advanced concepts, it covers topics such as Riemannian metrics, the isometric torsion-free connection on vector fields, the Ansatz of Koszul, the Gauss–Bonnet Theorem, and integrability. These concepts are then used for the study of Riemann surfaces. One of the focal points is the Uniformization Theorem for compact surfaces, an elementary proof of which is given via a property of the energy functional. Among numerous other results, there is also a proof of Chow’s Theorem on compact holomorphic submanifolds in complex projective spaces. Based on lecture courses given by the author, the book will be accessible to undergraduates and graduates interested in the analytic theory of Riemann surfaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book differs from a number of recent books on this subject in that it combines analytic and geometric methods at the outset, so that the reader can grasp the basic results of the subject. Although such modern techniques of sheaf theory, cohomology, and commutative algebra are not covered here, the book provides a solid foundation to proceed to more advanced texts in general algebraic geometry, complex manifolds, and Riemann surfaces, as well as algebraic curves. Containing numerous exercises this book would make an excellent introductory text.

Book Dessins d Enfants on Riemann Surfaces

Download or read book Dessins d Enfants on Riemann Surfaces written by Gareth A. Jones and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an introduction to dessins d'enfants and embeddings of bipartite graphs in compact Riemann surfaces. The first part of the book presents basic material, guiding the reader through the current field of research. A key point of the second part is the interplay between the automorphism groups of dessins and their Riemann surfaces, and the action of the absolute Galois group on dessins and their algebraic curves. It concludes by showing the links between the theory of dessins and other areas of arithmetic and geometry, such as the abc conjecture, complex multiplication and Beauville surfaces. Dessins d'Enfants on Riemann Surfaces will appeal to graduate students and all mathematicians interested in maps, hypermaps, Riemann surfaces, geometric group actions, and arithmetic.
