Download or read book Comovements and heterogeneity in the euro area analyzed in a non stationary dynamic factor model written by Sandra Eickmeier and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper establishes stylized facts on comovements and heterogeneity of individual euro-area countries' output and price developments in the past two decades. For this purpose, a non-stationary structural dynamic factor model is fit to a dataset of euro-area macroeconomic variables. The main results are as follows. Common permanent factors are important in explaining individual countries' output and price developments in the euro area. Output and prices are not only hit by permanent common, but also by permanent idiosyncratic shocks. The latter are mainly responsible for cross-country heterogeneity during most of the sample. The asymmetric transmission of common shocks plays a minor role; there is no strong evidence that some common shocks lead to greater cross-country heterogeneity than others.

Download or read book Current Accounts in a Currency Union written by Mr.Emil Stavrev and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fear about EMU was that in the absence of national currencies, country-specific shocks would result in greater current account divergences between member states. This paper finds that divergences across euro-area countries are smaller and have not risen relative to those across 13 other advanced economies with more flexible exchange rates. Also, the size of country-specific current account shocks in EMU countries is smaller and their persistence is greater than in the other advanced economies. However, these differences in current account dynamics do not appear related to different exchange rate dynamics.

Download or read book France in the Global Economy written by Alain N. Kabundi and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2007 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study identifies the main shocks that cause fluctuations in French output and their channels of transmission. It uses a large-dimensional structural approximate dynamic factor model. There are three main findings. First, common shocks, especially demand shocks, which seem to originate from the U.S., play an important role in explaining French economic activity. While international trade, relative prices, and FDI flows are the main channels of transmission, the stock market, consumer confidence, and interest rates also matter. Second, France's integration with the rest of the world has increased over time. Third, there is some tentative evidence of regional components in explaining French output fluctuations; country specific components also contribute. The predominance of exogenous factors affecting French output, the asymmetry in the transmission of shocks, and France's participation in a currency area, argue for making French goods, services, and labor markets as flexible as possible
Download or read book Large Dimensional Factor Analysis written by Jushan Bai and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2008 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large Dimensional Factor Analysis provides a survey of the main theoretical results for large dimensional factor models, emphasizing results that have implications for empirical work. The authors focus on the development of the static factor models and on the use of estimated factors in subsequent estimation and inference. Large Dimensional Factor Analysis discusses how to determine the number of factors, how to conduct inference when estimated factors are used in regressions, how to assess the adequacy pf observed variables as proxies for latent factors, how to exploit the estimated factors to test unit root tests and common trends, and how to estimate panel cointegration models.

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Bayesian Econometrics written by John Geweke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bayesian econometric methods have enjoyed an increase in popularity in recent years. Econometricians, empirical economists, and policymakers are increasingly making use of Bayesian methods. This handbook is a single source for researchers and policymakers wanting to learn about Bayesian methods in specialized fields, and for graduate students seeking to make the final step from textbook learning to the research frontier. It contains contributions by leading Bayesians on the latest developments in their specific fields of expertise. The volume provides broad coverage of the application of Bayesian econometrics in the major fields of economics and related disciplines, including macroeconomics, microeconomics, finance, and marketing. It reviews the state of the art in Bayesian econometric methodology, with chapters on posterior simulation and Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, Bayesian nonparametric techniques, and the specialized tools used by Bayesian time series econometricians such as state space models and particle filtering. It also includes chapters on Bayesian principles and methodology.

We reached that conclusion after reviewing recent research on the role of technology as a source of economic fluctuations. The bulk of the evidence suggests a limited role for aggregate technology shocks, pointing instead to demand factors as the main force behind the strong positive comovement between output and labor input measures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Europe in the aggregate is a not a major contributor to global current account imbalances, its trade and financial linkages with the rest of the world mean that it will still be affected by a shift in the current configuration of external deficits and surpluses. We assess the macroeconomic impact on Europe of global current account adjustment under alternative scenarios, emphasizing both trade and financial channels. Finally, we consider heterogeneous exposure across individual European economies to external adjustment shocks.
Download or read book How Successful Is the G7 in Managing Exchange Rates written by Marcel Fratzscher and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assesses the extent to which the Group of Seven (G7) has been successful in its management of major currencies since the 1970s. The G7 has been effective in moving the U.S. dollar, yen and euro in the intended direction at horizons of up to three months after G7 meetings, but not at longer horizons. The findings indicate that the reputation and credibility of the G7, as well as its ability to form and communicate a consensus among individual G7 members, are important determinants for the G7¿s ability to manage major currencies. This paper concludes by analyzing the factors that help the G7 build reputation and consensus, and by discussing the implications for global economic governance. Charts and tables.
