Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Community Programs for Cooperating Churches: A Manual of Principles and Methods The churches of a community forming an organization to make cooperation effective constitute the sole lauthority as to form, personnel and name of organization Jas well as to program. Local autonomy is a fundamental Jprinciple. Each Council of Churches is a law unto itself. It has no organic relation with other councils. All fellowship between these councils whether local, state, or national is voluntary. This fact must be borne in mind constantly by the reader of this book. The Convention for which these chapters were prepared and by which they were revised and approved had no authority. These recommendations are authoritative only so far as they command your attention and your service because of the common sense and Christian spirit evidenced in them. This book is not a discussion of Christian cooperation on the part of churches. It is a report on present-day cooperation, a presentation of well-tested plans. Those who prepared the reports were charged not to tell why churches should cooperate, but how they do and can cooperate. The names of those who assisted in the preparation of the reports and the plan of preparation are given in the appendix on page 240. You should read these lists of names that you may know by whom this work has been done. The Commissions were composed of men and women engaged in all fields of religious service in all parts of the country in all the leading denominations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When polling data showed that an overwhelming 81% of white evangelicals had voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, commentators across the political spectrum were left aghast. Even for a community that had been tracking further and further right for decades, this support seemed decidedly out of step. How, after all, could an amoral, twice-divorced businessman from New York garner such devoted admiration from the most vociferous of "values voters?" That this same group had, not a century earlier, rallied national support for such progressive causes as a federal minimum wage, child labor laws, and civil rights made the Trump shift even harder to square. In The End of Empathy, John W. Compton presents a nuanced portrait of the changing values of evangelical voters over the course of the last century. To explain the rise of white Protestant social concern in the latter part of the nineteenth century and its sudden demise at the end of the twentieth, Compton argues that religious conviction, by itself, is rarely sufficient to motivate empathetic political behavior. When believers do act empathetically--championing reforms that transfer resources or political influence to less privileged groups within society, for example--it is typically because strong religious institutions have compelled them to do so. Citizens throughout the previous century had sought membership in churches as a means of ensuring upward mobility, but a deterioration of mainline Protestant authority that started in the 1960s led large groups of white suburbanites to shift away from the mainline Protestant churches. There to pick up the slack were larger evangelical congregations with conservative leaders who discouraged attempts by the government to promote a more equitable distribution of wealth and political authority. That shift, Compton argues, explains the larger revolution in white Protestantism that brought us to this political moment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's Marshall Plan tells the story of the American Protestants who sought to transform Germany into a new Christian and democratic nation in the heart of twentieth-century Europe. James D. Strasburg follows the American pastors, revivalists, diplomats, and spies who crossed the Atlantic in an era of world war, responded to the rise of totalitarian dictators, and began to identify Europe as a continent in need of saving. He examines their far-reaching campaigns to make Germany into the European cornerstone of a new American-led global spiritual order. God's Marshall Plan illuminates the dramatic ramifications of these efforts by showing how the mission to remake Germany in America's image actually remade American Protestantism itself. American Protestants realized they had come to dramatically different conclusions about how to rebuild the West out of the ruins of war. European Protestants, meanwhile, began to sharply protest America's spiritual advance. Forsaking their wartime nationalism, a growing number of ecumenical Protestants championed a new ethic of global fellowship, reconciliation, and justice. However, a fresh wave of evangelical Protestants emerged and ensured that the religious struggle would continue into the Cold War. Strasburg argues that the spiritual struggle for Europe ultimately forged two competing visions of global engagement Christian nationalism and Christian globalism that transformed the United States, diplomacy, and politics in the Cold War and beyond.
