Download or read book Disposition of High Level Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-07-05 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focused attention by world leaders is needed to address the substantial challenges posed by disposal of spent nuclear fuel from reactors and high-level radioactive waste from processing such fuel. The biggest challenges in achieving safe and secure storage and permanent waste disposal are societal, although technical challenges remain. Disposition of radioactive wastes in a deep geological repository is a sound approach as long as it progresses through a stepwise decision-making process that takes advantage of technical advances, public participation, and international cooperation. Written for concerned citizens as well as policymakers, this book was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and waste management organizations in eight other countries.
Download or read book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade significant progress has been achieved in the development of waste characterization and control procedures and equipment as a direct response to ever-increasing requirements for quality and reliability of information on waste characteristics. Failure in control procedures at any step can have important, adverse consequences and may result in producing waste packages which are not compliant with the waste acceptance criteria for disposal, thereby adversely impacting the repository. The information and guidance included in this publication corresponds to recent achievements and reflects the optimum approaches, thereby reducing the potential for error and enhancing the quality of the end product. -- Publisher's description.

Download or read book Conflicting Integration written by Elli Louka and published by Intersentia nv. This book was released on 2004 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive explanatory framework for understanding the European Community environmental law. It looks behind the technicalities of the European Union environmental law as it explains the purpose and effects of Community's rulemaking. The proposed explanatory framework is used to analyze several environmental issues such as air pollution, water pollution, waste management and biodiversity protection as well as strategic, planning and economic instruments and to provide normative direction for the future development of EC law. This book is innovative in that it examines environmental issues from both a Community and an international perspective exploring the inter-connection between International Law and Community rulemaking. This book is an indispensable source for those who wish to understand EC environmental law, students, scholars and practitioners of EC law, environmental law, international law and policy.
Download or read book 1992 Planning for Chemicals Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology written by Eurofi Plc and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1992-Planning for Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology provides a summary of the relevant legislation, research programs, and proposals for the establishment of a single European market for the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries. The development of the European Community's (EC) policy and the implications of its implementation for the EC and third country markets are discussed. The views from a number of major organizations that operate in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology markets are considered to provide an insight into some of the factors influencing strategic planning for 1992. This book consists of 10 chapters and opens with an overview of the EC's goal of establishing a single market for the European Union by 1992, followed by a discussion on the implications of this single market for industry, commerce, and individuals. The following chapters focus on the Single European Act; corporate issues such as mergers and acquisitions; standards of good practice in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology sectors; and implications of a single European market for these industries. The final chapter is devoted to the views of organizations in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology sectors such as the European Chemical Industry Federation (CEFIC), Bayer AG, and COLIPA (European Cosmetic Industry Federation) in terms of the opportunities, problems, and challenges of the single European market. This monograph will be a useful resource for corporate managers, especially those in the IT sector, as well as policymakers and industry regulators.
Download or read book Disposition of High Level Radioactive Waste Through Geological Isolation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-10-07 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the next several years, decisions are expected to be made in several countries on the further development and implementation of the geological disposition option. The Board on Radioactive Waste Management (BRWM) of the U.S. National Academies believes that informed and reasoned discussion of relevant scientific, engineering and social issues can-and should-play a constructive role in the decision process by providing information to decision makers on relevant technical and policy issues. A BRWM-initiated project including a workshop at Irvine, California on November 4-5, 1999, and subsequent National Academies' report to be published in spring, 2000, are intended to provide such information to national policy makers both in the U.S. and abroad. To inform national policies, it is essential that experts from the physical, geological, and engineering sciences, and experts from the policy and social science communities work together. Some national programs have involved social science and policy experts from the beginning, while other programs have only recently recognized the importance of this collaboration. An important goal of the November workshop is to facilitate dialogue between these communities, as well as to encourage the sharing of experiences from many national programs. The workshop steering committee has prepared this discussion for participants at the workshop. It should elicit critical comments and help identify topics requiring in-depth discussion at the workshop. It is not intended as a statement of findings, conclusions, or recommendations. It is rather intended as a vehicle for stimulating dialogue among the workshop participants. Out of that dialogue will emerge the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the National Academies' report.

Download or read book Nuclear Law written by Stephen Tromans and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-12 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a practical guide to the international, EC and UK law applying to the various uses of nuclear energy and radioactive substances. The first edition was produced in 1997, and given the renaissance of interest in nuclear power in the UK and worldwide, this new, updated and much expanded edition is timely. It will cover the law relating to the permitting and operation of nuclear power stations, the decommissioning and clean-up of former nuclear facilities, radiological protection, the management of radioactive waste and spent fuel, liability and insurance, and the security and transport of radioactive materials. Readers will find a clear framework explaining the development and application of nuclear law, and how domestic law is based on and influenced by international and European requirements and by its historical context. In the commercial context, the chapters dealing specifically with new build and with decommissioning will be vital reading.
Download or read book One Step at a Time written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-03-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to other large engineering projects, geologic repositories for high-level waste present distinctive challenges because: 1) they are first-of-a-kind, complex, and long-term projects that must actively manage hazardous materials for many decades: 2) they are expected to hold these hazardous materials passively safe for many millennia after repository closure; and 3) they are widely perceived to pose serious risks. As is the case for other complex projects, repository programs should proceed in stages. One Step at a Time focuses on a management approach called "adaptive staging" as a promising means to develop geologic repositories for high-level radioactive waste such as the proposed repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Adaptive staging is a learn-as-you-go process that enables project managers to continuously reevaluate and adjust the program in response to new knowledge and stakeholder input. Advice is given on how to implement staging during the construction, operation, closure, and post-closure phases of a repository program.
