Book excerpt: Historic buildings shape the spine of our urban built environment; they are a tangible link to the past and connect people to their history and the history of place. Therefore, this research conveys a community involvement framework with regard to urban redevelopment throughout heritage conservation for Caliph Street- Historic Cairo. Thus, the environmental, economic, social and cultural issues related to urban redevelopment are examined. The necessity of involving community is highlighted. Moreover, the ability of government, heritage organizations and community groups to accept the notion of community involvement is investigated. A framework for urban cultural heritage conservation and management as a tool for sustainable redevelopment is presented. The incorporation of the literature and the existing status of Caliph Street is verified by questionnaires and guided interviews which target relevant interested stakeholders and professionals respectively to evaluate framework aspects. Furthermore, the role of public"s capacity to make better decisions which affect urban conservation outcomes is emphasized. To date, the acceptance of this tool is very marginal in Egypt and requires the broadening of an entire set of heritage values in order to extend this framework to all heritage conservation neighborhoods.

A cognitive mapping technique was used to elicit responses to the question "What is environmental stewardship?" Semistructured interviews were conducted with representatives of nine Seattle environmental organizations, a group of practitioners who collectively represent over 100 years of experience in the field. Program planners and managers have particularly direct experiences of stewardship. Cognitive mapping enables participants to explore, then display, their particular knowledge and perceptions about an idea or activity. Analysis generated thematic, structural representations of shared concepts. Results show that the practitioners have multilayered perceptions of stewardship, from environmental improvement to community building, and from actions to outcomes.

Democracy is fundamental to sustainable development because when people participate in the decisions that affect their lives, they are more committed to their implementation. Once community buy-in is garnered, people are empowered to engage in organized action and advocate for the causes they stand for which can affect the necessary changes in moving towards a sustainable community. Our Street London is a grassroots collective that supports alternatives to mainstream modalities of transportation such as biking, walking, and public transportation, as well sustainable urban form. My objective is to understand the richness and detail of the social constructions of the actors in the lived environment. My research explores successful community engagement strategies and how the knowledge generated through the inquiry process can benefit Our Street London members to mobilize group capacity, hence affecting the future directions of the group. My main method of data collection consisted of semi-structured, open-ended interviews with experts on community engagement. Participants consisted of academics, long-time practitioners, and employees of small to medium-sized sustainability/environmental and social justice organizations. This research does have an action-oriented intent to work with Our Street London beyond the scope of this project in translating recommendations into action.

A comprehensive analysis was carried out in consultation with a multitude of actors in the twenty-first-century urban scene and with disciplinary approaches that are available to heritage managers and practitioners to implement the HUL approach.This volume aims to be empirical, describing, analyzing, and comparing 28 cities taken as case studies to implement the HUL approach. From those cases, many lessons can be learned and much guidance shared on best practices concerning what can be done to make the HUL approach work.Whereas the previous studies served to illustrate issues and challenges, in this volume the studies point to innovations in regional and urban planning and management that can allow cities to avoid major conflicts and to further develop in competitiveness.
