However, the United States faces a shortage of affordable and accessible housing for low-income older adults and individuals living with disabilities. This shortage is expected to grow over the coming years given the population shifts leading to greater numbers of older adults and of individuals living with disabilities. Housing is a social determinant of health and has direct effects on health outcomes, but this relationship has not been thoroughly investigated. In December 2016, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a public workshop to better understand the importance of affordable and accessible housing for older adults and people with disabilities, the barriers to providing this housing, the design principles for making housing accessible for these individuals, and the features of programs and policies that successfully provide affordable and accessible housing that supports community living for older adults and people with disabilities. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Air Act of 1990 mandated that areas classified as "severe" non-attainment must impose commuting restrictions on major employment sites. The mandates were recently put on hold and states were given the option of implementing the mandates. The previously required mandates demanded that organizations employing over 100 employees survey their work sites to obtain information on commuter mode usage, develop plans to reduce vehicle occupancy (usually in the form of transportation demand management (TDM) techniques) to meet regional target occupancy rates, and maintain those occupancy rates, or the employer would be penalized financially and/or criminally. Currently, there are only a handful of urban areas that fall under the "severe" non-attainment classification. However, because the classification of "severe" non-attainment brings considerable economic penalties with it, cities currently not classified as "severe" non-attainment are continuously trying to find ways to reduce air pollution. Voluntary trip reduction strategies for work sites have been adopted by these cities as a way to control vehicular ozone levels. The specific problem that this study addresses is the problem of forecasting rideshare demand for the work trip to an employment site. A major employer in the Austin area of Travis County has expressed interest in developing ridesharing systems to curb demand for parking and therefore will be used as a case scenario for the application to innovative demand forecasting techniques

However, we have to consider that many commuters feel indeed very dependent on their car. Although ridesharing options have been discussed since many years, internet and smartphones provide completeley new opportunities to find ridesharing partners today. Thus, this book deals with current efforts on implementing flexible internet- and phone-based ridesharing services. With a main focus on the users‘ perspective, their demands and acceptance limits, we aim to explore success factors for non-profit, but also commercial ridesharing concepts.

Book excerpt: City and state governments around the world are struggling to achieve environmentally sustainable transport. Economic, technological, city and transport planning and human behaviour solutions are often hampered by ineffective implementation. So attention is now turning to institutional, governmental and political barriers. Approaches to these implementation problems assume that transport ownership can only be public (owned by state entities) or private (corporate or personal). Another option – largely unexplored to date – is communal ownership of transport. Community-Owned Transport proposes and develops the notion that communal ownership has a historical basis and provides unique opportunities for providing personal mobility. It looks at the historical roots of modern urban transport’s failings as those of technological change and the associated governing of transport systems, particularly the role of public sector institutions. Community ownership is explored through the new ‘sharing economy’ developments – car sharing, ridesharing and bicycle share schemes – and older social innovations in ecovillages and communal living. Models and practices of community ownership of transport are provided and this study also discusses how community ownership might contribute to sustainable transport. Drawing widely on different disciplines and fields of scholarship, this book explores the conceptual and practical aspects of communal ownership of transport. The main aim of this master thesis is to provide a framework for regulators, that helps to create an appropriate regulation for ride-sharing platforms in countries like Germany where ride-sharing platforms are currently banned. To achieve that, the main differences between the conventional taxi industry and its new sharing economy entrants are outlined, and a questionnaire is used to empirically identify advantages as well as disadvantages of ride-sharing platforms. Based on these results and on the related literature, new regulatory approaches are developed. With the rise of the internet came the rise of the sharing economy. This sharing economy is characterized by platforms which enable peers to share products and services with other peers. Hereby, these platforms are criticised to disrupt traditional industries. One famous example is the ride-sharing platform Uber which entered the taxi market and competes with conventional taxi organisations. Uber was founded in 2009 and experienced an enormous growth since then. Uber is available in 65 countries, is used by 75 million riders and 3 million drivers, and completes 15 million rides per day. However, Uber is heavily criticised by taxi drivers because they argue that Uber bypasses local licensing and safety laws and amounts to unfair competition. There are many protests by taxi drivers against Uber all over the world. In addition, Uber is criticized for being not safe. For example, the public awareness campaign `Who ́s driving you?` promotes for-hire vehicle safety and provides a list of safety incidents highlighting the risks of Uber and Lyft. Nevertheless, ride-sharing platforms like Uber offer several advantages to the public, for example user-friendly ride-hailing, cheaper transport prices, and new flexible job opportunities.
