Book The Communist Trials and the American Tradition

Download or read book The Communist Trials and the American Tradition written by John Somerville and published by Capital Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The U.S. government's interpretation of these issues threatened the very existence of civil liberties in our country for a generation. Dr. Somerville's testimony and the Court record herein is a key document not only for U.S. history and the future but wherever there is concern for the status of individual freedom or the meaning of "Marxist" revolution. In the course of some ten days on the witness stand, under intensive examination by several teams of defense and government counsel, as well as three judges, Dr. Somerville went into every aspect of Communist teachings in relation to the issue of forcible overthrow of government, the heart of all the trials."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Age of Eisenhower

Download or read book The Age of Eisenhower written by William I. Hitchcock and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 895 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling biography: a “complete and powerful assessment” of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidency (Booklist, starred review). Drawing on newly declassified documents and thousands of pages of unpublished material, The Age of Eisenhower tells the story of a masterful president guiding the nation through the great crises of the 1950s, from McCarthyism and the Korean War through civil rights turmoil and Cold War conflicts. This is a portrait of a skilled leader who, despite his conservative inclinations, found a middle path through the bitter partisanship of his era. At home, Eisenhower affirmed the central elements of the New Deal, such as Social Security; fought the demagoguery of Senator Joseph McCarthy; and advanced the agenda of civil rights for African-Americans. Abroad, he ended the Korean War and avoided a new quagmire in Vietnam. Yet he also charted a significant expansion of America’s missile technology and deployed a vast array of covert operations around the world to confront the challenge of communism. As he left office, he cautioned Americans to remain alert to the dangers of a powerful military-industrial complex that could threaten their liberties. Today, presidential historians rank Eisenhower fifth on the list of great presidents, and William Hitchcock’s “rich narrative” shows us why Ike’s stock has risen so high. He was a gifted leader, a decent man of humble origins who used his powers to advance the welfare of all Americans (The Wall Street Journal).

Book The Judicial Process

Download or read book The Judicial Process written by Henry Julian Abraham and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1986 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the nation's most astute observers of the court, this classic text examines the theory, practice, and people behind the judicial process. The new seventh edition brings the work completely up to date by examining important developments and structural changes in these three judicial systems, up through the end of 1997, including judicial appointments during the Bush and Clinton administrations; significant alterations in the structure and organization of the United States, British, French, and other European courts, with an emphasis on the ongoing changes in the judiciary of the United Kingdom; and the collateral developments on the frontiers of judicial review procedures as well as the judicial role. At once comparative, expository, analytical, and evaluative, this new edition of The Judicial Process illuminates even more vividly the judiciary's political, legal, and governmental roles, examining closely that much debated but little understood line between "judicial activism" and "judicial restraint."

Download or read book The Great Red Menace written by Peter Steinberg and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1984-11-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years 1947-1952 the Cold War, the anti- communist foreign policy of the U.S. government, and the reassertion by the American Communist party of its allegiance to the Soviet Union, the international communist movement, and a literal Marxist-Leninist ideology gradually gave rise to an anti-communist hysteria and to the repression and persecution of American Communists. Author Peter L. Steinberg shows that both the Truman Administration and the Communist Party were in part responsible for the McCarthy era that followed. Both were reacting to the ideologiical warfare conducted by J. Edgar Hoover. Using his allies in government, Hoover took advantage of the Cold War atmosphere to demand demonstrable action against communists. The Truman Administration responded with a loyalty program that seemed to legitimze the American people's worst fears, leading to demands for further action. The Communist Party's decision to go underground played into the hands of its enemies. Steinberg sees the attack on American communists as a necessary prelude to the demand for patriotic conformity and as a factor contributing to the development of an internal political police.
