Book Communication and Swallowing Changes in Healthy Aging Adults

Download or read book Communication and Swallowing Changes in Healthy Aging Adults written by Angela N. Burda and published by Jones & Bartlett Publishers. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication and Swallow Changes in Healthy Aging Adults compiles and presents the available research on healthy aging adults’ performance and abilities in the following areas: auditory comprehension, reading comprehension, speaking, writing, voice and motor speech abilities, cognition, and swallowing. This text also presents principles from the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and its applications to aging adults. One of the first texts to cover these principles, this book will address the need for a comprehensive view of communication and swallow issues in aging for students of speech-language pathology. Speech-language pathologist students will learn how to fully compare what would be considered normal for their elderly patients rather than overestimating or underestimating what aging adults are capable of doing. Knowing what would be considered within the spectrum of normal, will help speech-language pathologists to address therapy as effectively as possible. Having this information at hand is particularly important as the nation’s population is aging at a rapid rate and there is a need for evidence-based practice in speech-language pathology. Written in an easy to follow format, Communication and Swallow Changes in Healthy Aging Adults includes original research data, discussion questions and a list of Quick Facts at the end of each chapter to summarize key points. This text will serve as a useful resource as students see elderly clients in on-campus speech and hearing clinics and when they intern at hospitals and long-term care facilities. Instructor Resources: PowerPoint Slides and an Image Bank Testimonial: “Communication and Swallowing Changes in Healthy Aging Adults is a handy text, portable, and logically organized. The information is easy to follow complimented by information presented in tables/charts. This text would be helpful to a practicing therapist when making a differential diagnosis between a normal vs. atypical aging process. Communication and Swallowing Changes in Healthy Aging Adults would be an appropriate text for courses in Communications Disorders Departments for graduate students in a neuro course or a neurogenic communication disorders course, and in lifespan development courses as in the field of Psychology and Gerontology.” ~ Susan Durnford, M.S.,CCC-SLP, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology, Ithaca College

Book Communication disorders in normal aging and dementia

Download or read book Communication disorders in normal aging and dementia written by Katrin Appenzeller and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-04-16 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Duisburg-Essen, course: Language and the brain, language: English, abstract: People often do not like to think about the prospects of growing old although everybody will be affected and nobody can evade aging. Because of improved medical care, physical fitness and healthy nutrition the life expectancy of our world population increases. Hence there will be more elderly in the future than ever before. For a long time people wrongly associate aging with disease, and therefore this paper compares health aging with pathological aging, in this case dementia. Even the prevalence of syndromes such as dementia is dramatically increasing worldwide. Patients with dementia are the fastest growing neurobehaviorally disordered population and that is why the subject is very topical and interesting. First of all the issues normal aging and dementia are explained separately. The different characteristics are investigated on several levels which are general facts, communication disorders and causes. Furthermore a comparison of both issues is given in order to emphasis the differences. As a result follows a conclusion.

Book Communication Disability and the Psychiatry of Old Age

Download or read book Communication Disability and the Psychiatry of Old Age written by Karen Bryan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses management of communication disorders in the psychiatry of old age. The contribution of the speech and language therapist is the focus of the book, but this is described within the context of the multidisciplinary team. Language change and language assessment in psychiatric disorders associated with old age, especially dementias, are descbribed in detail. The form of service delivery offered is fundamental to the speech and language therapy intervention that can be offered to this complex and often neglected client group. A management perspective and service delivery in the USA and in the UK are described. Working with carers, service delivery in the community, an innovative scheme involving residential homes, a review of how community care initiatives have affected speech and language therapy services and an analysis of service audit are all included. As well as giving a description of speech and language therapy intervention with the elderly who have psychiatric disorders, the book also highlights the issues and challenges facing clinicians who work within the reformed health service. It should be of considerable interest to speech and language therapists, other health care professionals and students who work with older mentally ill people. Purchasers and managers who are commissioning and providing services for the older population with psychiatric disorders should also find the book useful.

Book Communication Problems in Elderly People

Download or read book Communication Problems in Elderly People written by Rosemary Gravell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-10 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s work with elderly people was making up an increasing proportion of the workload of speech therapists, due to the overall increase in the elderly population. At the same time all health professionals, such as nurses working in long-stay wards or nursing homes, had many elderly patients or clients who showed communication difficulties due to general problems such as institutionalization, social skill deficits, poor hearing or dementia. Originally published in 1988, this book provides a practical approach to working with elderly people with speech and communication difficulties. While traditional speech therapy for adults with specific disorders is covered, it focuses primarily upon the ‘indirect’ role of the therapist, working through lay and professional carers, environmental modification and in both hospital and community. The book is likely to appeal principally to speech therapists, but will also interest other professional staff working with elderly people.
