Many of the poems copied into the volume are by English poets, such as, Edward Young, William Cowper, Thomas Campbell, and James Montgomery. Some items are American works. Several poems and songs concern war, heroes, and death with some about love. In addition are some longer essays. One item titled "An oration in favor of ignorance," has the notation "delivered at the commencement in the University of Pennsylvania, July 4, 1781." The many songs, some military, have lyrics and musical notations. There is a poem entitled "The hero" praising George Washington and verses sympathetic to Ireland "The exile of Erin" and France "On the sufferings of the Queen of France." Some curious items appear in the volume, including "Matzel: in memory of a bat" and "Kill no toads!" Pages 34-60 are blank.

Book Commonplace Books

Download or read book Commonplace Books written by Jane Griffies Roscoe and published by . This book was released on 1774 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four volumes of poetical commonplace books kept by William Roscoe's wife Jane Griffies Roscoe before and after their 1781 marriage. The volumes each contain contributions from Roscoe in his own hand, as well as poems written by him but copied by his wife. They also appear to contain original work written by Jane Griffies Roscoe, in addition to works by poets such as William Collins, Thomas Gray, Phillis Wheatley, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Lord Lyttleton and Samuel Johnson. Each volume contains an inscription on the first page by Frederick Warburton Dunston, dated 3 November 1893, noting that he purchased the "volumes at Sotheby's on or about 19 July 1887" and that the transcriber was Jane Griffies, afterwards wife of Wm. Roscoe of Liverpool." Dunston owned 5 volumes of this commonplace, but there are now only 4 volumes and it is unclear when the fifth may have been lost. He believed that all 5 volumes were at "one time in the possession of the late Joseph Mayer of Liverpool," who probably purchased them "from the widow of my great uncle Richard Roscoe MD," who had been a great collector of Roscoe family documents.

Book My Commonplace Book Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Commonplace Book Hodgson gave me in London on the only occasion I met him after he left Australia. (After 1886 he became so immersed in psychical research, and I in legal work, that our correspondence ceased to be of a literary character.) Thus directly and indirectly Hodgson has much to do with the book - and, if it had been practicable, I would have placed his name on the title-page. This book is simply one to be taken up at odd moments, like any other collection of quotations. But there are two reasons why it may have some special interest. One reason is that it includes passages from a number of authors who appear to have become forgotten, or, at any rate, to be passing Lethe-wards. We, who dwell in the underworld, cannot, of course, have a complete knowledge of what is known or forgotten in the inner literary circles of England. We can depend only on the books and periodicals that happen to come to our hands, and perhaps should not rely too much on such sources of information. Yet I cannot but think that Robert Buchanan, for example, has become largely forgotten, and apparently this is the case also with a number of other authors from whom I quote. Because of this, I have retained all the passages I had from such authors. It must be remembered that this book is not an anthology. A commonplace book is usually a collection of reminders made by a young man who cannot afford an extensive library. There is no system in such a collection. A book is borrowed and extracts made from it; another book by the same author is bought and no extract made from it. On the one hand a favourite verse, although well known, is written out for some reason or other; on the other hand hundreds of beautiful poems are omitted. So far from this being an anthology, I have, as a matter of course, omitted many poems that since the seventy-eighty period have become general favourites; and, as regards the most beautiful gems of our literature, they are almost all excluded. There are for example, only a few lines from Shakespeare. Some exceptions have, however, been made. In a series of word-pictures, a few of the best-known passages will be found. A few others have been included for reasons that will readily appear; they either form part of a series or the reason is apparent from the notes. Apart from these I have retained Blanco White's great sonnet and "The Night has a thousand eyes," written by F. W. Bourdillon when an undergraduate at Worcester College, Oxford, because with regard to these I had an interesting and instructive experience. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1886 edition. Excerpt: ... THE COURTSHIP OF MILES STANDISH. Thi8 poem, lite Evangeline, written in hexameters, has a lighter movement, due to the more playful character of the narrative. A slight change of accent in the first line prepares one for this livelier pace, and the reader will find that the lights and shades of the story use whatever elasticity there is in the hexameter, crisp, varying lines alternating with the steady pulse of the dactyl. The poet has built upon a slight tradition which has come down to us from the days of the Plymouth settlement, a story which depicts in a succession of scenes the life of the Old Colony. In doing this he has not cared to follow explicitly the succession of events, but has been true to the general history of the time, and has in each picture copied faithfully the essential characteristics of the original. He has taken the somewhat dry and unimaginative chronicles of the time, and touched them with a poetic light and warmth, and the reader of this poem who resumes such a book as Dr. Young's Chronicles of the Pilgrims will find the simple story of the early settlers to have gained in beauty. L MILES STANDISH. In the Old Colony days, in Plymouth the land of the Pilgrims, To and fro in a room of his simple and primitive dwelling, 1. The Old Colony is the name which has long been applied to that part of Massachusetts which was occupied by the Plymouth colonists whose first settlement was in 1620. Massachusetts Bay was the name by which was known the later collection of settlements made about Boston and Salem. 2. The first houses of the Pilgrims were of logs filled in with mortar and covered with thatch. Clad in doublet and hose, and boots of Cordovan leather, Strode, with a martial air, Miles Standish the Puritan Captain....
