Book Social Work and Common Sense

Download or read book Social Work and Common Sense written by Paul Michael Garrett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-08 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in a lively, critical approach to social work education and practice, Social Work and Common Sense challenges readers to think critically and more deeply about core facets of social work knowledge and ‘received ideas’. Garrett draws on the work of Antonio Gramsci to develop new, and often provocative, insights on attachment theory, creativity, anger, human rights, the ‘unmarried mother’ in Ireland’s past, and contemporary approaches to ‘decolonising’ social work education. The book is divided into ten chapters, each of which includes a series of reflection and talk boxes to assist students to critically reflect (individually and in class/seminar and fieldwork/workplace discussions) on key facets of the preceding chapter. Addressing often complex ideas in a freshly accessible way, Social Work and Common Sense will be required reading in all postgraduate and advanced undergraduate classes in theory and social work.

Book Sacred Cows and Common Sense

Download or read book Sacred Cows and Common Sense written by Tim Bale and published by Tim Bale. This book was released on 1999 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Labour's postwar welfare policy, it shows that we need to break down distinctions between the "symbolic" and the "substantial" in politics, that "cultural theory" has potential as a way of understanding party political culture, and that welfare policy has played a crucial but self-defeating role in Labour's efforts to manage itself, win hearts and minds and govern competently. It concludes by arguing that New Labour's attempts to rethink welfare is largely rhetorical if one recalls what Labour did in office rather than promised in opposition. Rather than a serious attempt to confront social realities, the rethink represents a continuation of past practice and a way of signalling the government's "soundnesss" to the market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Common Sense and Labour the economic truth presented to the attention of the laborer is that there can be no great increase in wages without an increase in production. There is undoubtedly a place for books which set forth sound economic principles in popular fashion, but in this case the useful effect which the book might have is largely nullified by reckless statements, such, for example, as the passage on page 89 in which it is asserted that "with few exceptions, the American worker of today is not producing as much in eight hours as he did in four before the war". The slightest examination of the available statistics of production would have convinced the author, if he is capable of being convinced, that the productivity of labor has not shrunk by anything like one-half. Indeed, other statements in the book are inconsistent with any such reduction in productivity. If, as the author says, the labor bill of the country is seventy-five per cent of the national product, and the efficiency of labor has shrunk one-half, from what source do the goods necessary to keep up present high real wages come? To make matters worse, the author attempts to give the impression that he has made detailed inquiries into the subject by adding, "The percentage varies, but generally speaking the efficiency is about one-half". The only study of the subject of productivity which the present writer has seen is in the Massachusetts Industrial Review for March, 1920. The data there given show that from 1914 to 1919 there has been an increase in output per employee in four of the seven establishments investigated and a decrease in the other three. Even the soundest economic doctrine in such hands is likely to fall into disrepute. --Political Science Quarterly, Volume 36

Book Common Sense and Labour

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense and Labour A large employer who has never had any difficulties of moment with his workers and who has given a great deal of his time to the study of how the employment relation might in all fairness be adjusted, remarked somewhat hopelessly the other day: "There is something I do not understand in my workers. In former years, we have always been able rather easily to arrive at adjustments and I have rather prided myself, I think, upon the sincerity of the union between myself and those I employ. I have scientifically worked out wage payments and they have always been satisfactory. I have so adjusted my affairs that the volume of work passing through the shops seldom decreases. Book Educational Leadership and Antonio Gramsci

Download or read book Educational Leadership and Antonio Gramsci written by Howard Stevenson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful book explores the life and ideas of Italian Marxist theoretician Antonio Gramsci, and argues his work has considerable contemporary relevance when re-considering educational leadership in today’s age of crises. Gramsci’s theory of hegemony has provided an invaluable intellectual resource for those seeking to bring about radical change in the complex context of contemporary capitalist societies. In particular, his focus on the role of organic intellectuals engaging in an ongoing ideological struggle across economic, political and civil society helps to locate his notion of hegemony as a theory of leadership that is deeply rooted in pedagogical processes. This volume focuses on transformatory change both in and through education, reframing traditional notions of educational leadership as educative leadership, in which leadership for change, within and beyond educational institutions, is understood in pedagogical terms. This volume will be of pivotal interest to academics, researchers, and postgraduates in the fields of educational leadership, the sociology of education, and education policy and politics. Practitioners interested in educational leadership and social theory, and those active in social movements, may also find the book of use.
