Book Maine Apple Diseases Classic Reprint

Download or read book Maine Apple Diseases Classic Reprint written by Warner Jackson Morse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maine Apple Diseases In this State fungi are responsible for the major part Of the loss from the diseases under consideration. Fungi are low forms Of plant life made up Of threads of microscopic size. These threads constitute the mycelium of the fungus, which penetrates into the tissues Of the host, causing the death of the cells which compose these tissues and living upon their con tents. The conspicuous portions Oi the fungus which are seen on the surface of the host are in most cases the fruiting organs. Instead Of seeds these fruiting organs produce various forms and in various ways, often in vast numbers, more simple bodies which are known as spores. In combatting apple diseases caused by fungi, the chief Object is to prevent the formation of these spores, or if they are formed to destroy them before they can germinate and gain a foothold upon healthy fruit, foliage, or wood. This is more frequently brought about bv destroying the diseased portions as soon as Observed and by coating or spraying the healthy parts with some substance which will prevent the germination and destroy the spores if by chance they fall thereon. Book Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables

Download or read book Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables written by Dean Humboldt Rose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables: Apples, Pears, Quinces Some of the more important facts concerning fungi (molds) should be kept in mind in dealing with fungus diseases of fruits. An important characteristic of most fungi is that they produce minute bodies called spores, which are usually the most important means by which fungi reproduce themselves and are distributed. Being small and light, spores are easily carried by wind, rain, insects, and other agents. Spores of several kinds of fungi that attack fruits are quite common on the soil surface and on all plant parts above ground. Spores on the surface of a fruit, under favorable conditions, produce fine fungus threads that may enter the fruit and cause disease. Fungus spores lie inert until temperature and moisture condi tions are favorable for their germination. The fungus threads they produce may or may not enter the fruit through the unbroken skin, but they are always more likely to enter if skin breaks are present. Factors that favor the development of each disease in storage, in transit, or on the market are discussed under appropri ate headings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Snout Beetles That Attack Apples: Plum Curculio, Apple Curculio, Apple Weevil It is hoped that this bulletin may aid the fruit grower to a clearer understanding of the habits of these insects and to a better knowledge of the possibilities of holding them in check in the orchard. Such a knowledge should assist in extending the practice of spraying which, at present, is our surest and most practicable method of destroying these pests. The writer wishes to explain that in describing the habits and life histories of the apple curculio, and, to some extent also, those of the plum curculio, he has drawn freely from the writings of other entomologists. Book The Insects Destructive to Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Insects Destructive to Fruits Classic Reprint written by Mark Vernon Slingerland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Insects Destructive to Fruits Insects are among the most formidable enemies to success ful fruit-culture. The losses occasioned by the plum curculio alone amount to more than a million of dollars annually. Orchardists are sometimes deterred, by the attacks of this in sect, from attempts to raise the apricot, nectarine, peach, and plum; and the market supply of apples and pears is often much disfigured by it. The apple-worm, or codling-moth, is even a more formidable insect pest. New York fruit-growers alone yearly furnish $2, worth of apples and worth of pears to feed this insect; and other similar apple-growing States report nearly as large an annual loss from its ravages. The depredations of many other insect pests, like the apple tree and the peach-tree borers, the canker-worms, the tent caterpillars, the apple maggot, and the pear psylla, each causes annual losses amounting to several hundred thousand dollars. As a general rule those remedial measures are of little value, which attempt merely to repel insects without destroy ing them. Experiments show that rarely is an insect repelled from attacking any part of a plant by the application of odor ous substances, like carbolic acid, tar, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Leaflets on Fungus Pests and Allied Diseases of Fruit Trees Unlike insect pests, which are for the most part more or less clearly understood, there is often a certain mystery in the public mind connected with fungi. Their strange form, sudden appear ance and devastating habits are not readily explainable. To the practical fruit grower painful familiarity with their presence soon robs fungus parasites of any mysterious charm, and, by force of circumstances, he is compelled to study them, if it be only their mode of attacking plants and the best methods of keeping them at bay. Whether, however, the origin and} habits are understood or not, it may not be inadvisable to point out at the commencement of this volume the main outlines of the life of any ordinary fungus. Book Diseases of Fruit Crops Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of Fruit Crops Classic Reprint written by Harry Warren Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Fruit Crops It is a curious but logical fact that in spite of a rapidly increasing population and an increased demand for fruit, there has been a decided decrease in the number of deciduous fruit trees in the United States during the last thirty years. With this marked decrease in the number of trees, there has been only a slight decrease in total production, and it is probable that there has been an increase in fruit which actually reaches the ultimate consumer. It is evident that diseases and insects have eliminated millions of fruit trees and that those which remain have been made much more productive owing to the control of pests. This more efficient and more stable production in spite of the increase in the number Of parasites has been made possible mainly by the scientific development of plant protection. Efficient plant protection has been made possible only by a thorough knowledge of the nature and cause of the diseases of plants. Book The Life History and Control of the Rose Leaf Hopper

Download or read book The Life History and Control of the Rose Leaf Hopper written by Leroy Childs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life-History and Control of the Rose Leaf-Hopper: An Apple Pest The apple differs from the group just mentioned in that it serves as a food plant for two generations of nymphs; namely, insects resulting from over wintering eggs deposited in the twigs and branches, and the summer genera tion, eggs of which are deposited in the leaves. The only other plant upon which both generations have been observed to undergo development is the strawberry - a crop which ranks next to the apple in importance as a fruit grown in the Hood River valley. This, together with the fact that practically all of the host plants upon which the species feeds are grown everywhere many entirely neglected - may account for the fact that the rose leaf-hopper has become an insect of economic importance here.
