Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Animal Forms This little book is the outcome of ten years' experience in teaching elementary science. It embodies the outlines of what I have found it wise to attempt with children, and is offered to teachers with the hope that it may prove suggestive and helpful. A special effort has been made to remove stumbling-blocks, by explaining points of structure that are likely to be puzzling, by giving minute directions for procuring and handling specimens, and by providing simple outline drawings that can be quickly copied upon the blackboard by one who has little artistic talent. In general, the lessons are composed of two parts, - one in coarse type, consisting of short, clear statements of children's observations, frequently in their own words, with the facts that a teacher must sometimes supply in order to make a lesson complete in essential points; the other in finer type, containing directions for the teacher and additional facts, many of which the older children can be led to discover for themselves. In some of the lessons full illustrations have been given of the method of guiding pupils' observations by questions, which it has not been thought necessary to repeat in the study of every type, though the plan remains the same in all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Natural History, Vol. 2: A Description of Animal Life From the Lowest Forms Up to Man Still, it must be admitted that snakes do exercise a fascination of another sort over human beings, for everywhere we find traces, more or less distinct, of serpent worship. In ancient Egypt the snake and the egg were prominent symbols; among our American Indians the snake held a mystic position, and even in the religion of the Jews it was not entirely ignored, but at times it appeared as an object of genuine worship. Download or read book Popular Natural History Vol 1 written by J. S. Kingsley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Natural History, Vol. 1: A Description of Animal Life, From the Lowest Forms Up to Man IT has been the endeavor, in the preparation of these volumes, to present a popular account of Animal Life; but while scientific techni calities have been carefully kept in the background, it is hoped that scientific accuracy has not been sacrificed in the operation. To some there may appear an inequality in treatment. This, in part at least, has been intentional. Insects and Birds have already an enormous popular literature, while the other forms have been more or less neg lected. Believing that these other animals have their points Of interest and claims upon our attention, they have been given a prominence poissibly greater than they deserve. Another feature in these pages has been the collection of bits of unnatural history from the pages of the older writers. These have of course no place in our present science, but they belong to the history of zoology, and as such, have no small value, aside from their interest as scientific curiosities. It is hardly necessary to call attention to the fact that there is another Side to the animal kingdom which is fully as interesting and attractive as that presented here. In the last twenty years zoology has taken a new departure and a new lease of life. NO longer are zoologists content with watching the habits of well-known animals, and imposing long Latin names on those which are new. Museums are no longer necessary for the better class of work. To-day the student is trying to solve deeper problems. He is finding out how all animals grow from the egg to the adult condition; he is tracing resemblances, rather than difierences, and showmg the. Essential unity of all life, however great the apparent differences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extinct Monsters and Creatures of Other Days: A Popular Account of Some of the Larger Forms of Ancient Animal Life I have been requested by my friend Mr. Hutchinson, to express my Opinion upon the series of drawings which have been prepared by that excellent artist of animals, Mr. Smit, for this little book entitled Extinct Monsters. Many of the stories told in early days, of Giants and Dragons, may have originated in the discovery of the limb-bones of the Mammoth, the Rhinoceros, or other large animals, in caves, associated with heaps of broken fragments, in which latter the ignorant peasant saw in fancy the remains of the victims devoured at the monster's repasts. Goodrich and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Natural History of the Animal Kingdom, Being a Systematic and Popular Description of the Habits, Structure, and Classification of Animals From the Highest to the Lowest Forms, Vol. 2 The organs of circulation and respiration in birds are adapted to their peculiar mode of life: they are not, however, separated from the abdominal cavity by a diaphragm, as in the mammalia. The heart consists of four distinctly separated cavities - two auricles and two ventricles - so that the venous and arterial blood can never mix in that organ, and the whole of the blood returned from the different parts of the body passes through the lungs before being again driven into the systemic arteries. The blood is received from the veins of the body in the right auricle, from which it passes through a valvular opening into the right ventricle, and is thence driven into the lungs. From these organs it returns through the pulmonary veins into the left auricle, and passes thence into the ventricle of the same side, by the contraction of which it is driven into the aorta. This soon divides into two branches, which by their further subdivision give rise to the arteries of the body. The jaws or mandibles are sheathed in a horny case, usually of a conical form, on the sides of which are the nostrils. In most birds the sides of this sheath or bill are smooth and sharp, but in some they are denticulated along the margins. The two anterior members of the body are extended into wings. The beak is used instead of hands, and such is the exibility of the verte bral column, that the bird is able to touch with its beak every part of its body. This curious and important result is obtained chie y by the lengthened vertebrae of the neck, which in the swan consists of twenty-three bones, in the stork of nineteen, the ostrich eighteen, the domestic cock thirteen, the raven twelve. The vertebrae of the back are seven to eleven; the ribs never exceed ten on each side. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. [z0'5n, ani mal; leg' Os, a discourse], would naturally begin with the more simple forms, and finally conclude with those Of the highest development. We would not, however, were we even to include a consideration Of all fossilized, as well as living, forms, meet with an unbroken series; but would find rather a branched arrangement, the ultimate twigs Of which might represent the living forms It is the province Of systematic zoology to discover the rela tions that these ultimate twigs bear to one another and to their supporting branches, giving us 'finally a natural arrangement, a complete classification.
