Download or read book Performance of Formal Rural Credit in india written by Gurdev Singh and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2009-06-16 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of a study undertaken to examine the performance of formal rural credit in India. The author had generated the information on history of public intervention in rural credit, changes made in rural credit planning and efforts made to make access to formal credit easier and effective for enhanced use of credit by all sections of rural population. He has considered different facets of access and studied the performance on different fronts. Similarly different performance variables have been examined with respect to use of credit. The analysis is extended to district level as a case study of a selected district. The exercise leads to identification of deficiencies in the existing system and provides suggestions to make it more responsive and useful to users and efficient for the lending agencies. The book is another addition to his earlier publications on agricultural finance and would be useful to students of agricultural finance and policy makers and researchers interested in the rural credit.

Book excerpt: Health and medicine cannot be understood without considering the role of nurses, both as professionals and as working women. In India, unlike other countries, nurses have suffered an exceptional degree of neglect at the hands of state, a situation that has been detrimental to the quality of both rural and urban health care. Charting the history of the development of nursing in India over 100 years, Indian Sisters examines the reasons why nurses have so consistently been sidelined and excluded from health care governance and policymaking. The book challenges the routine suggestion that nursing’s poor status is mainly attributable to socio-cultural factors, such as caste, limitations on female mobility and social taboos. It argues instead that many of its problems are due to an under-achieved relationship between a patriarchal state on the one hand, and weak professional nursing organisations shaped by their colonial roots on the other. It also explores how the recent phenomenon of large-scale emigration of nurses to the West (leading to better pay, working conditions and career prospects) has transformed the profession, lifting its status dramatically. At the same time, it raises questions about the implications of emigration for the fate of health care system in India. An important contribution to the growing academic genre of nursing history, the book is essential reading for scholars and students of health care, the history of medicine, gender and women’s studies, sociology, and migration studies. It will also be useful to policymakers and health professionals.

Book Development and Sustainability

Download or read book Development and Sustainability written by Sarmila Banerjee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the reforms undertaken in the last two decades, India’s economic landscape has been radically transformed. This book examines the new economic map, which is shown to be shaped by two intertwined currents: globalization and sustainability. Weaving extensively through these currents and the canvas of development in the Indian economy they open up, this work seeks to introduce new methodologies, a corpus of concepts and modes of analysis to make sense of the emerging order of things. What transpires in the course of the investigation is a critical reflection of the present in which not only the new institutions, policies and practices are analyzed, but their limitations, fragility and at times myopic approaches are brought to light. By highlighting the rough edges created by the new conditions, this book is firmly engaged with the frontier of the Indian economy and ends up challenging many well-known conjectures and assumptions. In doing so, it strives to shift the Indian economy to a new terrain, thereby fundamentally re-locating and re-orienting the discourse of that economy as a unique object of analysis.
