Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The only stability possible is stability in motion.”—John William Gardner In his classic treatise Self-Renewal, John W. Gardner examines why great societies thrive and die. He argues that it is dynamism, not decay, that is dramatically altering the landscape of American society. The twentieth century has brought about change more rapidly than any previous era, and with that came advancements, challenges, and often destruction. Gardner cautions that “a society must court the kinds of change that will enrich and strengthen it, rather than the kind of change that will fragment and destroy it.” A society’s ability to renew itself hinges upon its individuals. Gardner reasons that it is the waning of the heart and spirit—not a lack of material might—that threatens American society. Young countries, businesses, and humans have several key commonalities: they are flexible, eager, open, curious, unafraid, and willing to take risks. These conditions lead to success. However, as time passes, so too comes complacency, apathy, and rigidity, causing motivation to plummet. It is at this junction that great civilizations fall, businesses go bankrupt, and life stagnates. Gardner asserts that the individual’s role in social renewal requires each person to face and look beyond imminent threats. Ultimately, we need a vision that there is something worth saving. Through this vision, Gardner argues, society will begin to renew itself, not permanently, but past its average lifespan, and it will at once become enriched and rejuvenated.

Book excerpt: Renewal of the Mind is the church's collective response to the Apostle Paul's exhortation for us to present our bodies as living sacrifices which are holy and acceptable unto the Lord. During this period, we intensify our commitment to not be conformed to this world and its patterns of behaviour. Instead, we allow the penetrating power of the Holy Spirit to transform us by the renewing of our minds. It is only through such renewal that we will be able to discern the 'good, acceptable and perfect will of God' (Romans 12 v 1-2).

Book Mutual Aid and Union Renewal

Download or read book Mutual Aid and Union Renewal written by Samuel B. Bacharach and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing decline in union membership is generally attributed to an increasingly hostile economic, legal, and managerial environment. Samuel B. Bacharach, Peter A. Bamberger, and William J. Sonnenstuhl argue that the decline may have more to do with a crisis of union legitimacy and member commitment. They further suggest that both problems could be addressed if the unions return to their nineteenth-century, mutual aid-based roots. The authors contend that the labor movement is characterized by two models of union-member relations: the mutual aid logic and the servicing logic. The first predominated in the early days and encouraged a sense of community among members who worked to support one another. In the twentieth century, it was largely replaced by the servicing model, which asks little of members, who remain loyal only if their leaders deliver increasing wages and benefits.Regaining legitimacy and strengthening member commitment can only happen, the authors claim, if mutual aid logic is allowed to return. They examine three unions in the transportation industry to judge the effectiveness of new programs created after the old model.

Book Renewing Your Commitment to Christ s Call

Download or read book Renewing Your Commitment to Christ s Call written by Michael A. Milton and published by Chaplain Care. This book was released on 2023-07-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Renewing Your Commitment to Christ's Call" by Dr. Michael A. Milton is a concise yet powerful book that offers encouragement and guidance to pastors and their families. Originally delivered as an address to Armed Forces Chaplains and Spouses at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association's The Cove in Asheville, North Carolina, the book focuses on John 21:1-22, a passage that remains relevant and inspiring to all ministers. Dr. Milton begins by acknowledging the hardships that pastors often face in their ministry. He emphasizes the need to go beyond superficial solutions that merely provide temporary relief for spiritual injuries. Instead, he invites readers to delve into the timeless truths found in Peter's call to shepherding Jesus' flock. Drawing from this biblical narrative, the author presents four key vectors that can bring personal and vocational renewal. These vectors offer practical and spiritual guidance to pastors, helping them navigate the challenges of their calling. By applying these principles, ministers can find strength, purpose, and endurance, even in the darkest hours of their ministry. Although Dr. Milton refers to the book as "a humble little tract," its content carries profound and eternal truths. The insights shared in this book have the potential to transform the lives of ministers and prepare them for the demanding nature of their work. By renewing their commitment to Christ's call, pastors and their families can find the inspiration and strength they need to serve faithfully and make a lasting impact in the lives of others. "Renewing Your Commitment to Christ's Call" is a valuable resource that reminds pastors of the significance of their role and provides them with practical guidance for personal and vocational renewal. It serves as a source of encouragement and support for those who have dedicated their lives to shepherding Jesus' flock, helping them find renewed purpose and joy in their ministry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hans Urs von Balthasar's masterwork, The Glory of the Lord, the great theologian used the term "theological aesthetic" to describe what he believed to the most accurate method of interpreting the concept of divine love, as opposed to approaches founded on historical or scientific grounds. In this newly translated book, von Balthasar delves deeper into this exploration of what love means, what makes the divine love of God, and how we must become lovers of God in the footsteps of saints like Francis de Sales, John of the Cross and Therese of Lisieux. Based in the theological aesthetic form, Love Alone is Credible brings a fresh perspective on an oft-explored subject. A deeply insightful and profound theological meditation that serves to both deepen and inform the faith of the believer.

Book Commitment to a Christian Renewal

Download or read book Commitment to a Christian Renewal written by Ray A. Hauserman and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unexpected enthusiasm in both traditional Christian & New Age circles continues to be expressed for COMMITMENT TO A CHRISTIAN RENEWAL. When unrest grows in Christian, Hindu & Muslim groups because of attempts to lure people away from their own traditional faith; this Hindu sage propels Christians back to Jesus with an intensity & perception that is astounding. Sree Sree Thakur responds to such queries from searching American Christians: Is the Church or is Christ primary? What distinguishes real from counterfeit devotion? Do we really need a living embodiment of God? His answers demonstrate that sensitive awareness of the necessity to follow one's Lord without distraction or distortion. He insists on the need for a pride in Jesus & an untottering devotion to Him. He further shows how this can be done so one can embrace all of creation & all of mankind without animosity, contempt or scorn. For Christians who are caught in the conflict between New Age perceptions & Jesus Christ, this book is a must. If Thakur's millions of disciples represent a true Hindu conception of religion, then humanity's longing for a universal faith is nearer than we think.

Book The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership

Download or read book The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership written by Jim Dethmer and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You'll never see leadership the same way again after reading this book. These fifteen commitments are a distillation of decades of work with CEOs and other leaders. They are radical or provocative for many. They have been game changers for us and for our clients. We trust that they will be for you too. Our experience is that unconscious leadership is not sustainable. It won't work for you, your team or your organization in the long term. Unconscious leadership can deliver short term results, but the costs of living and leading unconsciously are great. Fear drives most leaders to make choices that are at odds with healthy relationships, vitality and balance. This fear leaves a toxic residue that won't be as easily tolerated in an increasingly complex business environment. Conscious leadership offers the antidote to fear. These pages contain a comprehensive road map to guide you to shift from fear-based to trust-based leadership. Once you learn and start practicing conscious leadership you'll get results in the form of more energy, clarity, focus and healthier relationships. You'll do more and more of what you are passionate about, and less of what you do out of obligation. You'll have more fun, be happier, experience less drama and be more on purpose. Your team will get results as well. They'll be more collaborative, creative, energized and engaged. They'll solve issues faster, and once resolved the issues won't resurface. Drama and gossip will all but disappear, and the energy and resources that fueled them will be redirected towards innovation and creativity. Any one of these commitments will change your life. All of them together are revolutionary. Leaders who practice the 15 commitments: - End blame and criticism - Speak candidly, openly and honestly, in a way that invites others to do the same - Find their unique genius - Let go of taking everything-especially themselves and their problems-so seriously - Create win for all solutions - Experience a new relationship to time and money where there is always enough What do you need to bring to the table? Be curious. Sounds so simple, and yet in our experience it's a skill few have mastered. Most of us are far more interested in being right and proving it, than we are in learning, growing and shifting out of our old patterns. By default we gravitate towards the familiar. We're asking you to take a chance and explore the unfamiliar. You'll get scared and reactive. We all do. So what? Just stay curious and let us introduce you to a whole new world of leadership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Unfinished Business, a story of crisis and change that can help us find renewed honesty and purpose in our personal and political lives Like much of the world, America is deeply divided over identity, equality, and history. Renewal is Anne-Marie Slaughter’s candid and deeply personal account of how her own odyssey opened the door to an important new understanding of how we as individuals, organizations, and nations can move backward and forward at the same time, facing the past and embracing a new future. Weaving together personal stories and reflections with insights from the latest research in the social sciences, Slaughter recounts a difficult time of self‐examination and growth in the wake of a crisis that changed the way she lives, leads, and learns. She connects her experience to our national crisis of identity and values as the country looks into a four-hundred-year-old mirror and tries to confront and accept its full reflection. The promise of the Declaration of Independence has been hollow for so many for so long. That reckoning is the necessary first step toward renewal. The lessons here are not just for America. Slaughter shows how renewal is possible for anyone who is willing to see themselves with new eyes and embrace radical honesty, risk, resilience, interdependence, grace, and vision. Part personal journey, part manifesto, Renewal offers hope tempered by honesty and is essential reading for citizens, leaders, and the change makers of tomorrow.
