Book Commercial Supersonic Transport Program Phase Ii a Comprehensive Report Volume Viii a Aircraft Propulsion System

Download or read book Commercial Supersonic Transport Program Phase Ii a Comprehensive Report Volume Viii a Aircraft Propulsion System written by BOEING CO RENTON WASH AIRPLANE DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies conducted during Phase II-A have resulted in design improvements for all major propulsion systems. The pods are relocated. The most significant refinement are: The improved General Electric GE4/J5G afterburning turbojet engine has been selected on the basis of economic, performance, and growth advantages. The inlet design has features which improve cruise performance, allow manual control, and reduce engine noise. The propulsion pods are located farther aft on the wing to improve engine-airplane performance. Exhaust flow is directed away from the empennage by afterburner redesign. The thrust reversing system discharges a major portion of the exhaust flow over the wing for increased reversal capability and reduced exhaust gas ingestion. A low-idle engine control feature is provided for economical descent flight operation. The airplane fuel system incorporates recirculation which allows use of lowest quality Jet A or A-1 kerosene. The constant speed drive/generator and the hydraulic pump on an inoperative engine accessory gear box can be starter driven by pressurized air from another engine during flight or from an air cart during ground operations. The four propulsion pods, as well as the major pod components (inlet, engine, and exhaust system), are interchangeable, and can be installed at any of the four positions.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The improved performance location of the engines reduces engine exhaust noise on the tail and fuselage, while virtually eliminating noise impingement on the wing. Sound suppression techniques are used and the structure is designed to be fully capable of coping with the temperature and noise for the design life of the airplane, even with occasional hot-day augmented operation under static and takeoff conditions. Passengers are located completely ahead of the engine exhaust nozzle noise cone. The aerodynamic pitchup tendency at high-angles-of-attack has been resolved in wind tunnel tests at both NASA Ames and Boeing. Risk of engine ingestion of debris and slush is eliminated by the use of deflectors and by providing greater distance between inlet and ground. Distribution of hydraulic system power to the control surfaces is balanced so that any failure of a power system does not result in asymmetric control surface operation. Spring-actuated mechanical locks are provided on the aileron and rudder control surfaces to prevent flutter in the event of hydraulic powr failure. Primary flight control system complexity has been reduced. Formal design reviews, system mockups, an extensive equipment quality analysis program, and an integrated test plan using large developmental test rigs provide early detection of problems and permit verification of system operation through prompt revision and refinement.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This performance specification presents the performance requirements for major airframe systems of the Boeing model 733-290 commercial supersonic transport airplane. The specification has been prepared in response to the Federal Aviation Agency's Exhibit A, Statement of Work, Phase II-A and has been based on airplane operating criteria and applicable documents such as Civil Aeronautics Regulations, military specifications and Technical Orders. Performance specifications for the following systems have been prepared: -- (1) Avionics; (2) Electric Power; (3) Hydraulic System; (4) Flight Controls; (5) Environmental Control Systems; (6) Flight and Navigation Instruments; (7) Fuel Systems; and (8) Fire Detection and Extinguishing Systems. These major systems are comprised of several subsystems for which performance requirements have been separately provided. For example, fuel system requirements have been subdivided into requirements for the fuel feed, fueling, dumping, and gaging subsystems.

Book Commercial Supersonic Transport Program Phase Ii a Comprehensive Report Volume Xvii a Ground Operation

Download or read book Commercial Supersonic Transport Program Phase Ii a Comprehensive Report Volume Xvii a Ground Operation written by BOEING CO RENTON WA AIRPLANE DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvements in airplane configuration from the Phase I model 733-197 to the Phase II-A model 733-290 have not changed the original concepts and approaches to ground operations. However, because of the increased size of the model 733-290, the ground operation requirements were re-evaluated. The re-evaluation results are: (1) ground support equipment requirements are essentially the same as outlined for the Phase I proposal; additional equipment includes a maintenance run-up sound suppressor, accessory drive removal and installation equipment, an articulated nose sling, and fuel tank thermal insulation repair equipment; (2) the model 733-290 configuration is compatible with the fifteen airports designated by the FAA with minor modifications to fixed facilities required in some cases; (3) servicing times are 30 minutes at enroute stations and 55 minutes at origin and turn-around stations; servicing actions and servicing equipment are the same as discussed in the Phase I proposal. The following elements of ground operation, as proposed in Phase I, are still applicable: provisioning; functional analysis system; Airport mobile facilities; and maintenance. (Author).

Book Commercial Supersonic Transport Program Phase Ii a Comprehensive Report Volume V a Book 1 Aerodynamics

Download or read book Commercial Supersonic Transport Program Phase Ii a Comprehensive Report Volume V a Book 1 Aerodynamics written by BOEING CO RENTON WA AIRPLANE DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major objective of Phase II-A has been to achieve a supersonic transport economically competitive with subsonic airplanes. The Model 733-290, with a direct operating cost of 0.9 cents per seat statute mile, accomplishes this for intercontinental operation. The Model 733-291, identical in all respects except for gross weight and operational empty weight, provides an equally economic airplane for domestic operation. The community noise associated with both airplanes is significantly less than for present subsonic jets. Many configurations have been considered in Phase II-A. The most promising, Model 733-290, is a logical development of the variable-sweep airplane proposed in Phase I. Substantially improved supersonic cruise efficiency has been achieved with no compromise in the outstanding low-speed performance and safety characteristics. (Author).

Download or read book Commercial Supersonic Transport Program Phase Ii a Comprehensive Report Volume Xviii a Training Plans written by BOEING CO RENTON WA AIRPLANE DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These studies show that there is a need for further and more extensive aircrew flight training than was proposed in Phase I. Specifically, the flight time has been increased from 14 hours to 24 hours. The flight engineer's course flight schedule is increased from 14 hours to 18 hours. The airlines are currently making encouraging progress in their efforts to demonstrate that significant reductions in flight training hours can be achieved through the use of improved simulator effectiveness and training techniques. SST training flight time may ultimately be reduced by these improved techniques.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document contains the required substantiating data for management evaluation factors. These data, plus applicable data from the Phase I proposal, should provide the necessary support for information summarized in the design status reports. Factor 1, which deals with organization, has been included to reflect the changes in personnel and management structure since Phase I. No fundamental change has been made in the basic management and organization approach. (Author).
