Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Epistle to the Ephesians Paul, agreeably to his promise, returned to Ephesus, pro bably in the fall of the year 54. Here he found certain disciples who had received only John's baptism, to whom Paul said: John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the pe0p1e, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spake with tongues and prophesied. This book was released on 2016-10-16 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistle to the Ephesians Of the duration of this imprisonment, and of the occupation of the illustrious prisoner while it lasted, we learn from the concluding words of the Acts And Paul dwelt two whole years in -his. Own hired house, and received all that came unto him, preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, no man forbidding him. As to the date of his arrival in Rome, and so that at which his two years of captivity began, we are to note that his departure from Cesarea occurred upon the arrival in that city of Porcius Festus in Felix's room as Procurator of J udea. This has been shown to be in the year A. D. 60 (wieseler, quoted by Rev. G. Lloyd Davies). In the autumn of that year those who were to conduct Paul to Rome, as a prisoner, sailed with him from Cesarea. In the Spring of the following year, A. D. 61, he arrived in Rome, and the two years of his imprisonment began, closing, it is thought, in the spring of the year A. D. 63. At this point, our certain knowledge of him ceases, save that mention is made by writers such as Clemens, the disciple and com panion of Paul, by the Canon of Muratori, and by Eusebius, of his release from this imprisonment, his subsequent missionary journeys to the boundary of the West, and his martyrdom under Nero. It was during this latter period, supposed to be within the dates A. D. 63 and A. D. 68, that the two epistles to Timothy and the Epistle to Titus were written; the second to Timothy being last of all these productions of the Great Apostle. (see Hackett's Commentary on the Acts in this series, p. These four epistles of the Captivity, with the study of one of which we are to be occupied in the pages following this introduction, derive from the circumstances under which they were written an individuality quite as marked as one discovers in their con tents. The author of them is not now, as in the case of so many other of these remark able productions, actively pursuing his missionary journey from city to city, or amidst the activities and anxieties of his daily ministry at Corinth or Athens or Philippi. We picture him in the hired lodgings at Rome, which he had been permitted to occupy, instead of any one of the prisons there, such as that which tradition assigns to him in his second imprisonment, and from which he went forth to his death. He enjoys, it is true, a measure of freedom not commonly allowed to prisoners, yet is in one way never permitted, by night or by day, to forget the fact of his real condition. The hand with which these letters were written wore, during the whole two years of his captivity, a chain, the other' end of whichlwas fastened to the left hand of the soldier who guarded him. This unwelcome attendance was never under any circumstances intermitted, and the fact of it lends genuine pathos to those places in his letter to the Ephesians, where, in speaking of himself as the prisoner of Jesus Christ, or, prisoner in the Lord, he uses the Greek word 5 Monroe, which means, one bound with a chain. Book An Entire Commentary Upon the Whole Epistle of St Paul to the Ephesians Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Entire Commentary Upon the Whole Epistle of St Paul to the Ephesians Classic Reprint written by Paul Baynes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Entire Commentary Upon the Whole Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians Conversions were not so rare in those days. All the accounts agree in stating that Paul Baynes, - for so his name is most frequently spelt, - was born in London. The date, and all concerning his early days, has, so far as I know, perished. 'He received his school education at Withersfield in Essex' - under one Master Cosens, his schoolmaster, adds Clarke - 'and was afterward admitted of Christ College, Cambridge.' Of this college he was afterwards chosen fellow. It was a famous school of the prophets. Fuller says, 'It may without flattery be said of this house, "Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellent them all," if we consider the many divines who in so short a time have here had their education.' Among its learned writers, up to his own day, who had also been fellows, No. 10 is 'Paul Bains; he succeeded Mr Perkins at St Andrew's.' It is interesting to go over Fuller's list of thirteen names in this row, most of which are familiar as household words. The first in the list is Edward Dearing. The fifth is 'Richard Clerk, one of the translators of the Bible, and an eminent preacher at Canterbury.' The sixth is William Perkins, who preceded Baynes as lecturer at St Andrew's. Perkins died in 1602, which fixes the date of Baynes' appointment as lecturer, for he immediately succeeded him. Perkins was buried at St Andrew's Church, at the expense of Christ College. Strange enough, he, too, was renowned only for his wickedness in his youth. Brook tells us, that 'for some time after his going to the university, he continued exceedingly profane, and ran to great lengths in prodigality. While Mr Perkins was a young man, and a scholar at Cambridge, he was much devoted to drunkenness. As he was walking in the skirts of the town, he heard a woman say to a child that was froward and peevish, "Hold your tongue, or I will give you to drunken Perkins yonder." Finding himself become a byword among the people, his conscience smote him, and lie became so deeply impressed that it was the first step to his conversion.' Brook says, on the authority of Granger, that Perkins was deprived by Archbishop Whitgift, but this is a mistake: he died at his post. His works were collected and published, in three volumes folio, in 1606, and are very precious. Number twelve in Fuller's list of literary fellows, is a clarum et venerabile nomen, William Ames, better known as Amesius. He was fortunate in having Perkins for his tutor at Cambridge; and one may infer from his godly life that he was taught more things than Latin and Greek. Ames was a contemporary of Baynes; they were both lifting up their voices like a trumpet together from about the beginning of the century till the year 1610, when, like so many others, Ames had to flee to Holland. Amesius writes an introduction to one of Baynes' posthumous works - alas, they were all posthumous, so far as we know. We may as well add the last name on the list of Fuller's worthies: it is that of 'Joseph Mede, most learned in Mystical Divinity.' This list has greatly lengthened since Fuller's day: curious readers will find much information about this college, and many other things of the period, in Professor Masson's Life of Milton, in that first volume, which makes us long for the second, so slow in following its predecessor. Book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary: On the Epistles to the Ephesians and to the Colossians The following Commentary is primarily philological. Its aim is to ascertain with as great precision as possible the actual meaning of the writer's language. The Commentaries which have been regularly consulted are those of Chrysostom and Theodore of Mopsuestia, amongst the ancients; and amongst the moderns, Alford, Barry, De Wette, Eadie, Ellicott, Meyer (W. Schmidt), Moule, von Soden, and the Speaker's; also for Ephesians, Harless, Stier, and Macpherson; and for Colossians, Lightfoot The Commentary of von Soden, though concise, is very acute and independent. Mr. Moule's also, although bearing a modest title, is of great value. Other writers have been occasionally consulted. Much use has been made of Fritzsche's occasional notes in his various commentaries, especially in connexion with the illustration of the language of the Epistles from classical and late Greek authors. Wetstein, of course, has not been overlooked. The text adopted is that of the Revisers, except where otherwise stated. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians History. Of Ephesus is lost in an extremely remote antiquity. In the eleventh century before Christ, Androc lus, son of the Athenian Codrus, is said to have estab lished a Greek colony there,1 but at a still earlier period Phoenician emigrants seem to have been attracted to it on account of its convenient situation, and to have con tributed largely to its material prosperity. Their presence soon made itself felt, by impressing a special stamp upon the habits and customs of the place, and may account for many of the social and religious practices which came to be regarded as characteristic of its culture. The natural situa tion of the town, within easy reach from behind of the great producing districts of the time, and favoured with a con veniently central position that allowed ready egress toward Greece and Italy on the one hand, and toward the ports of the Eastern Mediterranean on the other, insured to it com mercial prosperity, and steady growth in population and in political importance. The enterprising Phoenician traders would find it less difficult to effect a settlement there, inas much as the deities whom they worshipped were the same as, or at least very similar to, those of the earlier inhabitants of the land, and the religious modes of thought prevalent among both peoples in general harmonised. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle to the Ephesians: With Introduction and Notes The General Editor of T be Camerz'dge Bible for 55/20o thinks it right to say that he does not hold himself responsible either for the interpretation of particular passages which the Editors of the several Books have adopted, or for any opinion on points of doctrine that they may have expressed. In the New Testament more especially questions arise of the deepest theological import, on which the ablest and most conscientious interpreters have differed and always will differ. His aim has been in all such cases to leave each Contributor to the unfettered exercise of his own judgment, only taking care that mere controversy Should as far as possible be avoided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beautiful Word Pictures of the Epistle to the Ephesians: Or the Busy Man's Commentary Upon the Bible This is the most wonderful of all the epistles of Paul. Each word seems to shine out into the darkness of the human sky, and leaves a shining trail. This epistle was written when Paul was a prisoner. Chap. 3: 1, 4: 1; This was his first Romancaptivity, beginning A. D. 61 and lasting for two years. Onesimus was associated with Tychicus, the bearer of this letter. In the epistle to Philemon, sent by Onesimus, Paul prays for a lodging, verse 22, against his early arrival which he then confidently expected. Hence this epistle must be placed, as to date, late in the captivity. Not earlier than 63. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary, Explanatory, Doctrinal, and Practical, on the Epistle to the Ephesians I. An apostle is one sent forth by the authority of a superior - one commissioned to discharge some trust. It is the common idea of a messenger. In this sense, several of the disciples of Christ are called apostles; as Barnabas, l Andronicus, and J unia.2 These two are said to be of note among the apostles not probably in comparison with the twelve, but with Barnabas, Timothy, Titus, and Epaphroditus.8 These were messengers of the churches.
