This book was released on 2019-01-19 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries on the Law of Criminal Procedure, or Pleading, Evidence, and Practice in Criminal Cases, Vol. 1 It is the purpose of the author, in future editions of his works connected with the criminal law, to make such improvements and additions as shall render them complete guides, as far as elementary books can be, both to students and to practitioners, in this department of our law. As observed in the Preface to the first edition, these two volumes on Criminal Procedure are not so closely connected with the work on the Criminal Law as to render their separate use inconvenient. Yet in divid ing the larger subject into Law and Procedure, for the two works, I took care that there should be as little repetition as possible in the one, of what was treated of in the other. And as such a division is necessarily artificial to a considerable extent, the result is that readers may sometimes be in doubt into which work to look for a particular thing. For this reason, I have in a few instances referred to the work on the Criminal Law, in the Alphabetical Index to these volumes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries on the Criminal Law, Vol. 1 Those who have examined the second edition of my work on the law of Criminal Procedure, published a few months ago, will see that I have done for this work what I did for that. I have rearranged the matter throughout, added some new topics, improved many of the old discussions by presenting the doctrines in new lights and new relations, cited the latest cases, pruned away what could be spared of the old to give place to what is better and fresh, and pre fixed in a peculiar type headings to the sections to enable the practitioner rapidly to get at the contents of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries on the Law of Marriage and Divorce, With the Evidence, Practice, Pleading and Forms, Vol. 1: Also of Separations Without Divorce, and of the Evidence of Marriage in All Issues IN this edition the work is enlarged, not merely by the citation of the cases published since the fifth was issued, but by accumulations of material extending back to the original first edition. Something of the extent of the en largement appears in the fact, that, in the fifth edition, cases were cited; in this, there are making an addition of to the present edition. This has hap pened substantially as explained in the Preface and Introduction to the third edition of my Criminal Procedure. The order of the work is not changed, not even are the sections renumbered; but the great increase of material has compelled an almost entire rewriting, to find room for all. Some of the discussions, particularly on questions which have become settled since the first edition appeared, have been greatly abridged; others, though not abridged, are given in fewer words. And, by various devices, room has been found, not only for the added cases, but for such new elucidations as seemed to be required.
