This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries on the Epistles to Timothy, Titus, and Philemon The notes to the present volume are enriched by nume rous extracts2 from a rare work - the Author's Sermons on the two Epistles to Timothy.3 But for the strong and gene ral desire that posterity should listen to this great preacher, those Sermons would never have seen the light. They were written down, as they flowed from his lips, in the same manner as the extemporaneous Latin expositions of which some account has been given elsewhere.4 While they are Expository Discourses, leaving no part of the two Epistles unexplored, they are addressed to the great body of the Christian people, and are distinguished by those homely and striking appeals, and that marvellous felicity of language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Homiletical Commentary: On the Epistles of St. Paul the Apostle to Timothy, Titus, Philemon Timothy was the son of a Christian Jewess named Eunice and a Greek whose name is unknown. Though nothing can be said definitely as to the place of his birth, Acts xvi. I would seem to indicate that it was Lystra or some place in the immediate neighbourhood. There St. Paul first made his acquaintance, when he was already a disciple. Paul, after circumcising him by way of expedient, adopted him as his fellow-worker. They journeyed together through Asia Minor to Philippi. At Ber a we find them together again. Thence he followed St. Paul to Athens, and was sent on to Thessalonica; and having fulfilled his mission there, returned to St. Paul at Corinth. He was with the apostle during his residence in Ephesus, and also when the epistles to the Corinthians and Romans were written. When St. Paul was a prisoner at Rome, Timothy was still with him. The apostle's high regard for his junior is evident in many ways. Though of frail health, he was the true child of an indomitable father in the gospel who had "no other like-minded." Date and circumstances of writing the epistle. - Considering (a) the close resemblances of the Pastorals, it seems incredible that they are separated by any long intervals of time. (b) The almost insuperable difficulties of fitting them into the period covered by the Acts of the Apostles. (c) The even greater difficulty of harmonising their notes of time and place with those mentioned by St. Luke. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Pastoral Epistles: First and Second Timothy and Titus; And the Epistle to Philemon IN preparing these notes on the Pastoral Epistles and the Epistle to Philemon, I have made the version of King James the basis, in accordance with the general plan of this work, but have also consulted throughout the Revised Version. While all the later Greek textshave been carefully examined, I have found my own judgment best satisfied with that of Westcott and Hort; and this for the most part has been followed. On passages where the reading is still in doubt, I have given a detailed statement of the critical materials for forming a judgment only on the more important for, While it is sometimes of interest to the general student to know what is the reading in the more celebrated ancient manuscripts, it remains true that only a trained specialist is really competent to form a valuable judgment in textual criticism. In the commentary each paragraph is prefaced by an out line of the thought. And the notes are often accompanied by a full translation or para phrase of the verse or passage under consideration, designed to indicate the writer's view of the exact meaning. I have throughout supplemented my own interpreta tion by citing the interpretations of commentators, both ancient and modern, whose proved ability, scholarship, and Spiritual insight have given permanent value to their views. This has been done freely, on the supposition that this work will come into the hands of many to whom the writings of these commentators are not accessible, and who would be glad to have access to their views, especially on the more difficult passages. When a topic has required a special and extended dis cussion, I have placed that discussion in the body of the commentary, and not at the end as an excursus. Closely related as these epistles are to subjects relating to the constitution of the Christian Church and the character and work of the Chris tian ministry, I should have been glad of more room for special discussion, but the limits assigned me forbade an extended treatment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Acts and Pastoral Epistles: Timothy, Titus and Philemon The First Book of the Extended Historical Treatise, of which our so-called Acts of the Apostles is the Second, is the Book that has come down to us under the name of The Gospel according to Luke. This is assured by the unbroken testimony of antiquity, which ascribes both Books to the same author. It is evidenced further, however, by most convincing internal proofs. Both Books are addressed to the same patron, a Gentile Christian of high rank named Theophilus. In the Preface attached to the Gospel much more is promised than that Book supplies, while what is lacking is actually given in Acts. The Gospel closes abruptly, apparently pointing forward to something yet to come; Acts so opens as to supply precisely what was thus left untold, and fully accounts for the manner in which the Gospel closed. Acts explicitly puts itself forward in its Preface as the Second Book of a treatise, to the First Book of which is ascribed the compass and contents of the Gospel of Luke. The two Books are bound together by such kinship, not only in language, style, and historical method, but also in tone, point of view, and underlying purpose, as to suggest not merely that they are the products of a single pen, but also that they are parts of one whole. It is difficult to refuse to recognise in these two Books, in short, consecutive portions of a large historical work, written throughout with a single aim and on a carefully adjusted plan, and intended to make a definite impression as a whole. Place of Acts in the Treatise. It is more difficult to deterthe Apostles 5. Introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul's letters to Timothy and Titus have sometimes been labelled his 'Pastoral Epistles'. Scholars have assigned them to a later period in Paul's ministry, when churches he founded were more settled in structure, perhaps after release from his first imprisonment in Rome and during a second (which may be true). Others postulate a later pseudonymous writer, claiming to be Paul (which may not be true). The fact is that all Paul's letters are 'pastoral' in content, full of paternal care and concern for his converts and their fellowships. What really distinguishes these is that they are addressed to individuals rather than churches. So it seems more appropriate to classify them as his 'Personal' correspondence. We can therefore expect them to reveal more of his personal relationship with his and their reactions to his delegated responsibilities, giving helpers their unique interest and relevance. It also enables us to include the brief note to Philemon, whose importance in the New Testament tends to be overlooked.
