Book excerpt: Hold Open the Door an anthology of original poems and critical essays by emerging Irish and Northern Irish poets created in response to the work of their mentors and major literary influences. The publication of this spirited anthology coincides with the commemoration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of Seamus Heaney winning the Nobel Prize in Literature, which served as the impetus to establish the Ireland Chair of Poetry, a three-year post jointly administered by Queen's University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin, and University College Dublin, as well as the Arts Councils of both Ireland and Northern Ireland. The authors and editors seek to honor the legacy and contributions of previous Chairs of Poetry and their peers, with the newly commissioned poems and critical reflections collected here sparking an intergenerational dialogue by bridging established names in Irish literature with a wealth of new and diverse voices emerging in the national scene. Featuring a new foreword from Frank Ormsby, the current Ireland Chair of Poetry, Hold Open the Door is a singular fusion of Irish literature's past, present, and future, pointing the way forward for one of the Anglophone world's most vibrant creative centers.

Book Commemorative Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Commemorative Poems Classic Reprint written by David N. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commemorative Poems Whatever the degree of merit that belongs to this work, or to anything he has written, whether in prose or verse, the writer has done his best, or as nearly so as circumstances permitted; and he would have done better if he had possessed higher endowments and a wider culture. The few German translations, made many years ago, will not, it is hoped, lessen the value of this collection; and the few pieces not strictly commemorative in their character, or those commemorative only of personal qualities, rather than of public events, will hardly be regarded as an irrelevant addition. It is not, then, with indifference, that the author commits this little venture to the waves of time. If, on its way to the oblivion that sooner or later is the destiny of all perishable things, it shall linger a little while among the "Enchanted Islands" of popular favor before it reaches the Lethean lake, his highest expectations will be realized. Book National Cowboy Poetry Gathering

Download or read book National Cowboy Poetry Gathering written by Western Folklife Center and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is the granddaddy of all cowboy poetry events, proclaimed by the US Senate in 2000 in recognition of its pioneering role in the preservation and revitalization of this important American tradition. In conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the event, this commemorative volume collects 100 poems by various cowboy poets who have appeared at the gathering over the last three decades, from Baxter Black and Wallace McRae to Georgie Sicking and Paul Zarzyski. Representing the best contemporary cowboy poetry from the first gathering to the present, the poets and poems are culled for their importance and quality with consideration for a wide range of topics that represent the richness and depth of this broad genre. In addition to poems that will make you smile, sigh, or sit up straight in your saddle, the anthology features expressive photos of the contributors, biographical and explanatory headnotes, relevant artwork from the Western Folklife Center’s extensive archives, and illuminating sidebars on various topics such as working cattle; life on the land; the relationship between cowboy poetry and song; gear, horses, or cattle mentioned in poems; and profiles and photos of important cowboy poets from earlier times. Cowboy poet extraordinare Baxter Black will provide a foreword, and Charlie Seemann, executive director of the Western Folklife Center, will write an introduction that gives context both to the event itself and to cowboy poetry in general, from the days of the trail drives in the nineteenth century to the lives of the hardworking men and women who still ranch and live on the land in the West today.

Book The Poetics of Commemoration

Download or read book The Poetics of Commemoration written by Erin Michelle Goeres and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poetics of Commemoration is a study of commemorative skaldic verse from the Viking Age. It investigates how skaldic poets responded to the deaths of kings and the ways in which poetic commemoration functioned within the social and political communities of the early medieval court. Beginning with the early genealogical poem Ynglingatal, the book explores how the commemoration of a king's ancestors could be used to consolidate his political position and to provide a shared history for the community. It then examines the presentation of dead kings in the poems Eiriksmal and Hakonarmal, showing how poets could re-cast their kings as characters of myth and legend in the afterlife. This is followed by an analysis of verse in which poets use their commemoration of one king to reinforce their relationship with his successor; it is shown that poetry could both help and hinder the integration of the poet into the retinue of a new king. Focusing then on the memorial poems composed for Kings Olafr Tryggvason and Olafr Haraldsson, as well as for the Jarls of the Orkney Islands, the book considers the tension between public and private expressions of grief. It explores the strategies used by poets to negotiate the tumultuous period that followed the death of a king, and to work through their own emotional responses to that loss. The book demonstrates that skaldic poets engaged with the deaths of rulers in a wide variety of ways, and that poetic commemoration was a particularly effective means not only of constructing a collective memory of the dead man, but also of consolidating the new social identity of the community he left behind.

Book National Poets Cultural Saints Canonization and Commemorative Cults of Writers in Europe

Download or read book National Poets Cultural Saints Canonization and Commemorative Cults of Writers in Europe written by Marijan Dović and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In National Poets, Cultural Saints Marijan Dović and Jón Karl Helgason explore the ways in which certain artists, writers, and poets in Europe have become major figures of cultural memory, emulating the symbolic role formerly played by state rulers and religious saints. The authors develop the concept of cultural sainthood in the context of nationalism as a form of invisible religion, identify major shifts in canonization practices from antiquity to the nationally-motivated commemoration of the nineteenth century, and explore the afterlives of two national poets, Slovenia's France Prešeren and Iceland's Jónas Hallgrímsson. The book presents a useful analytical model of canonization for further studies on cultural sainthood and opens up fruitful perspectives for the understanding of national movements.
